I just stumbled across that The Mission did a pretty damn fine cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows"

Helter Skelter covered by Dana Fuchs. Is it heretical to prefer a Beatles song sun by someone else? (I must admit that I prefer several of their songs as they appeared in the film Across the Universe).
Also, I had never really paid attention to Donovan's Season of the Witch before, but my favourite version is actually Joan Jett's cover.

Very cool version! Here's my favorite cover of that one by 801, with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera on guitar and Brian Eno on vocals:

Eno has such a unique sound and style to his vocals, it adds a lot to his solo music. I have the 801 cd but looking it up on wikipedia, I see there is a 2009 "Collector's Edition" with a 2nd disc of rehearsals, which I wouldn't mind getting hold of.

A definite improvement on the cringey original.

"Smokin' in the Boys Room"
Yeah, nothin' like cranking this on my Walkman wearing my acid wash jeans as I walked through the halls in school...

I remembered another favourite Id forgotten about until recently: Bongwater's cover of Roky Erickson's You Don't Love Me Yet.

Good one, Duragizer ! There aren't a lot of good Kate Bush covers, though a few of the zillions of Running Up That Hill covers are mighty nice. Here's a cover I recently discovered that I love way more than the original; I'm not much of an Eagles fan, but she does an absolutely stunning job of doing a faithful Hotel California on an exotic Chinese instrument. This genuinely sends shivers up my spine:

Thanks to Duragizer for the recent resuscitation of this topic. I have a few that I consider bang-up great cover versions, across several different genres too. I've posted a couple of them in other threads, but not here.
Link Wray, doing a killer version of Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"
Bobby Womack and his version of The Mamas & Papas' "California Dreamin'" (my personal favorite version of this song)
Mike Scott and The Waterboys "out-Van-ing" Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing" (with a little bit of Lennon/McCartney's "Blackbird" thrown in for good measure)
The incomparable Screamin' Jay Hawkins absolutely owning Tom Waits' "Whistlin' Past the Graveyard" AND "Heart Attack and Vine"

A few more favorites since the last time I posted on this thread.
Dwight Yoakam's amazing version of Purple Rain.
I much prefer The Band playing Atlantic City to Springsteen.
Levon Helm did an incredible version of Steve Earle's The Mountain.
