We did this as a Classic Comics Christmas topic back in the CBR days. My #1 pick was the team of Ross Andru and Bill Everett, specifically their work on the Defenders origin in Marvel Feature #1. Cei-U! Pretty sure Severin & Severin was my #2! That was Everett throwing a mini temper-tantrum, if I remember correctly. Apparently Andru left a bunch of pencil marks on his page, and made the inker decide which to highlight. Everett said "$%^& this!" and inked every line! He was promptly removed from the title. (But I TOTALLY agree that it looked great! I generally strongly dislike Andru as a superhero artist*, and the only Marvel books I really liked were this one and the couple issues of Fantastic Four where he was inked by Joe Sinnott.) * I love Andru as a humor artist, though!

Some teams I pulled from some of my fave runs would be: Jim Lee and Scott Williams Tony Harris and Wade Von Grawbadger Darryl Banks and Romeo Tanghal Howard Porter and John Dell III I read that Darryl Banks was an art teacher for a college while doing GL. I wonder what happened to him ?

Sal Buscema/Sam Grainger (and Cockrum/Grainger was pretty good also) Tuska/Colletta (especially when a pretty woman is involved) Miller/Jansen Swanderson Byrne/Austin Dillin/Giordano (a tad bit more solid than McLaughlin) Byrne/Aparo (Wha...?) Andru/Espisito
... probably in that order
And Jim Aparo is a bit of an anomoly in this discussion, as he pencilled/inked/lettered himself for the majority of his career.

Most of the Filipino artist inked themselves, when they weren't inking others. My favorite:

I've been trying to remember which combo I picked as my #1 when we did this topic in the Classic Comics Christmas event some years back, and I'm pretty sure that it was John Romita and Mike Esposito for their work on Amazing Spider-Man. Simply sublime comic artwork!

I wonder what happened to him ? I found him on twitter @realbankster. It looks like he still draws commissions when his work schedule permits him too. His art still looks great.

Infantino & Anderson (L) / Romita Sr. & Kane (R) Probably the greatest examples of artists complimenting each other whether one served as penciler or inker. Too many legendary covers and interiors to list.

Simply sublime comic artwork! Do you really prefer the Romita/Demeo stuff to Romita's self inked run on ASM #42-48 or the Romita/Giacoia run on Daredevil? Someone must have disliked Esposito's work on ASM #39-41, as GCD says Romita made touch-ups or amendments to the inking of those issues. The first page you posted looks nicer to me than the last two, which were probably entirely inked by Esposito.

Well, this thread is about inking teams, so John Romita's self-inked stuff is ineligible. However (and maybe I'm showing my ignorance here), to me, Romita's self-inked stuff on ASM is much of muchness with the Esposito inked issues. I personally think Esposito did a fantastic job on Romita's artwork and inked his pencils very sympathetically. In fact, I bet I wouldn't be able to tell his inking apart from Romita's in a "Pepsi challenge" of a series of individual panels from each inker The Romita/Giacoia team definitely produced some nice art on Daredevil, but if I was being finickity, I'd say that, to my eyes, the inking is noticeably heavier and more "fussy" than Esposito's. As a result, it lacks some of the life and kinetic zing of either Esposito's inking or Romita's own self-inked work.

I can't stand Esposito's inking regardless of penciller, though he is at his least objectionable over Romita. I find his inks watery, lifeless, lacking in depth and clarity. Team him with Sal Buscema and I'm ready to gouge my eyes out. Unlike my esteemed colleague, I can tell Romita/Esposito from Romita solo at a glance, especially if there's a face.
Cei-U! But that's just me!

Myself, I consider Andru to be the other great ASM artist -- after Ditko and Romita, natch. Again, I think Esposito's inking of Andru is top notch and I'm honestly struggling to see how you could find his work lifeless. I really think his inks are exciting and full of "bounce". Oh well, one man's meat and all that...

Maybe a bit off topic, but I loved Andru's work on Amazing Spider-Man.

During a Roy Thomas Conan saga on several occasions Buscema's pencil-work was inked by "The Tribe". "The Tribe" knocked it out the park, every single time. Here is a memorable scene from A Witch Shall Be Born: by Mitra indeed! Notice exceptionally well done dialogs, and by the quantity as well - not too much not too little, just the right amount. We have the perspectives of Conan, the chieftain, even chieftain's second in command without any fat exposition and what not (George Miller level).
