You're not alone mfd1. I too read and enjoyed Shooter's Defiant. In fact, I was anxiously awaiting Schism. Defiant, in my mind, was kind of Valiant's Earth-2; not Golden Age knock-offs, but a parallel universe connected through Shooter. This was War Dancer, Defiant's most powerful character. He was an Aztec-oriented harbinger of the end of the world. Earth had become infested with the Black Plague, and Schism was the story of how War Dancer helped to bring about its end and usher in the Defiant universe, which was a corrupted Dreamtime that produced with world of Org, the living organism existence as the back drop for Warriors of Plasm. War Dancer was co-created by Shooter and Alan Weiss. He did this beautiful cover. Nice!!!

Anyone that has been around this forum a bit knows I'm a Shooter fan. I wanted this to succeed but Marvel screwed him.

I'm a Shooter fan too. They really had him in a terrible spot. Truly sad he's never been able to really get back into the industry the way he deserves.

I agree. He's got some stories coming out from American Mythology in their title BEDTIME STORIES FOR IMPRESSIONABLE CHILDREN. He has a story in the already released first issue, and will have one in the next few issues of that title.

I'm a Shooter fan too. They really had him in a terrible spot. Truly sad he's never been able to really get back into the industry the way he deserves. I've always had the impression that Shooter's tragic flaw was knowing that he's a genius. He broke into the industry at a record age, had an unprecedented rise in the ranks, and found himself in a situation where he had to be a leader of people that he felt knew less than him. At least half the time that Shooter railroaded a creative team, he was right, but he lost people's trust and respect every time he did that all the same. I recall a story about him personally rewriting an entire issue of either Harbinger or X-O Manowar at the 11th hour one night because he realized there was a continuity glitch in how the two titles were intersecting. He was right; it made for a better product, but at what cost to the writer who saw his work thrown in the trash, Shooter deciding he could do it better himself? Shooter reminds me of my father -- brilliant, and (as a result) dangerously overconfident and totally unable to exercise common sense and bite his tongue when it meant empowering others and earning their trust/respect. Shooter meant well, he had profound vision, and many (not all) of his editorial edicts made a lot of sense, but being right at the expense of others doesn't win you much credit with a bullpen, especially at Marvel, where the atmosphere had been incredibly laid back prior to his arrival, writers often functioning as their own editors. Granted, I've never worked in comics, and I've never even met Shooter. This just seems to align well with what I've read of the man.

Tangentially related - after Defiant collapsed a local store was selling Prism and Dark Dominion albums crazy cheap (can't believe the effort I put into getting those cards and related stuff). I picked up a whole bunch to use for other card sets (can't believe the money I spent getting cards and related stuff).
Shooter was up at Phoenix Comicon this weekend. I asked him about his blog and had him sign my Secret Wars omnibus. He said he wants to get back to the blog...!
I don't remember a whole lot about Plasm, but I do remember thinking that the made-up words seemed really forced...

Besides Weiss, they also had the previously mentioned Steve Ditko. I know lots of fans from back in the day that really liked his Dark Dominion. It was pretty good, and perfect for Ditko.
They also had Steve Leialoha, Charlie Adlard, J.G. Jones, Dave Cockrum, David Lapham, Mike Chen, Jim Fern, and Mike Netzer on art.
Writers included Chris Claremont, Len Wein, and Dan Chichester.
I also hoped maybe someone would buy these characters and add them to Valiant, which would've been really cool.

Very astute observation Shax
Yes, I greatly respect the man, however, it's apparent that somehow he gets in all this legal mess repeatedly. Maybe he's constantly overreaching ?
After all the problems post-Marvel with Valiant, Defiant, Broadway and even Acclaim, when I heard he'd be working on the GK characters again over at Dark Horse, I figured finally he's just accepted he's no longer the boss and will pound out some good stories.
Not the case, although I did like what little we did get, and was glad to see the characters return.
Wouldn't it be nice if he contributed to the DynaKey line ?
It's his interpersonal skills that trip him up. Over the years it's come out about his stand-offish nature with creators that turned so many of them against Marvel.

Shooter has said the bad guy was going to win in Schism. Too bad that didn't get to play out.

How interconnected are the various Defiant series? My impression is that they are, and I'm asking because I have the opportunity to buy pretty much the entire run of Warriors of Plasm for the equivalent of a few dollars. I've always been extremely curious about Defiant.

They're not.
They were building up to it with Schism, but each title could be read on its own.
Buy them IMO.
I thought Warriors of Plasm was pretty interesting.
The only title better than that was the Ditko title Dark Dominion.
