Thanks Prince Hal, Phil and Farrar. But Prince Hal, how could you say Sal Buscema didn't have his own style! He certainly did, especially when he inked himself. I'd recognize a Sal cover or panel a mile away. To me his work looked like someone's who'd learned to draw from the Marvel Guidebook. I ceratinly couldn't draw as well, but then again, Sal just never impressed me as more than extremely competent. Not a bad thing to be, by nay means, but also not a trend-setter, ground-breaker or trailblazer. Not ground breaking, no. (though his late inking style was innovative) But he was a great story teller. His books were always paced well and you always knew exactly what was happening. He did great action as well as more contemplative moments. He was not the draftsman his brother was, but then, who was? As for style, I liked the way he drew, but that is just personal taste and a subjective matter. I mainly objected to you saying he did not have his own style.

kirby101, I agree. He was a competent storyteller; it's just that I saw nothing different between his work and the generic Marvel house style, which is why it never jumped out at me, I guess. I'll admit I didn't seek out Buscema's work, so I'm not familiar with any later innovative work he did, as you are. To each his own, I guess. Hey, I've become more of a Bob Brown fan over the years, and he's nobody's idea of a cutting-edge artist.

Hey, I've become more of a Bob Brown fan over the years, and he's nobody's idea of a cutting-edge artist. Lots of the older artists weren't known for innovation and stylizing as they were "instructed" to maintain the house style or lessen their own style to keep the company look. Many even came from advertising backgrounds where it was important the art be noticed but exaggerated. But if you looked, each artist still had something of their own that showed through even under the worst printing conditions. Whether it was the heroic body stances or positioning that showed or it was in facial or body proportions or whether it was something else, every artist has their own distinct "flavor" in how they draw. Like kirby101 said above i can pick out a Sal Buscema or Bob Brown or Bob Hall fairly easily from their artistic details. Heck and Tuska had certain ways that they drew action or posing that stands out readily enough and Sal has similar ability.

If Marvel's House style is Kirby and Ditko and Buscema(both) and Colan and Romita and Steranko etc... I will take it over most work these days.

Well, sure, but I'm talking about the Romita-style aped by Andru and Espo, etc. Look, Romita was great, but when everybody imitated that style, to me, it just made Marvel comics look interchangeable. I can also tell Tuska (Oh, those long extended fingers splayed out at the reader and those toothy grins!) and Heck (scratchy is catchy), but Sal? Sorry, he just doesn't float my boat. De gustibus...
