For me it was the Famous First Edition reprint of All-Star Comics #3: the first appearance of the Justice Society, which someone in my family gave me as birthday present. I don't remember which birthday, but I suspect I was 7 or 8.

This is going to be an odd answer, but I never did. The first comics I was ever given were Marvel, and my dad had only read Marvel books when he was in college (not his own, as he collected stamps, but he read his fraternity brothers' books, particularly FF and ASM), so he steered me to characters he was familiar with.

a screwball in a bow tie with a pink lightning bolt at his beck and call. You wear a bow tie? I had no idea.

While on a road trip in the summer of '67, my parents bought a stack of comics to entertain the three restless, squabbling kids in the back seat. One of those comics was Justice League of America #56, which introduced me to Hourman, Wildcat, the Golden Age Hawkman, Mr. Terrific, and a screwball in a bow tie with a pink lightning bolt at his beck and call. It was love at first sight. Cei-U! I summon the turning point! I like the team-ups where they try to give some of the less well-known JSAers a chance. This sounds great! I don't think I've read this one. Who's the villain? The villains are four ordinary humans--a banker, a secretary, a retired baseball player and a Mongolian bandit--transformed into super-menaces by "black spheres," a species of non-sentient lifeforms living backwards in time. Cei-U! I summon the Money Master, Gem Girl, the Smashing Sportsman and How Chu (gesundheit)!

April of 1963 was my first encounter with DC's Golden Age heroes via Flash # 137. This was a couple of months before the first meeting of the JLA and the JSA. I had already read a Superman story using the parallel worlds concept which I found fascinating.

100 page Super-Spectaculars. One of the best bargains ever in comics.

I guess this means that you just discovered It today . Infinite Crisis? Or were there some in COIE too? Maybe Earth X? As you can see, I obviously don't know much about golden age heroes. I did read Starman, whoever mentioned that. Who was a golden age hero in that? Edit: Freedom Fighters are who I'm thinking of from Infinite Crisis. They're golden age heroes aren't they?

I guess this means that you just discovered It today . I did read Starman, whoever mentioned that. Who was a golden age hero in that? Ted Knight, Jack's Dad and the original Starman. Wesley Dodds, the original Sandman. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern. Sandra Knight, the Phantom Lady. A bunch of other characters who would be referenced throughout the series, like Hourman with his addiction to Miraclo. Also, one of Jack's "Talking with David" stories was set at a dinner party with a bunch of deceased Golden Agers.

I have the first three omnibus but haven't past that yet. And I had notrealized that Alan Scott is a golden ager, so really him appearing in GL Vol 2 would probably be the first actual time I was introduced to a golden age hero.

Have they had much modern appearances before IC?
