Birthdays...Marty Robbins. Almost single-handedly brought the western back to C & W. He easily could have been a crooner.

On this day in 1969, The Beatles released Abby Road. And West Side Story premiered on Broadway in 1957 Also Happy Birthdays to Bryan Ferry and Olivia Newton-John

My 11 year old daughter has just discovered Nirvana. LOL! She is listening to all the albums on Spotify and wants a Nirvana t-shirt. This girl always makes fun of my music for being "too old."
Of course, she found Nirvana through that Jay-Z song that cribs "Teen Spirit."
I have to admit, back in '91 Nirvana was a real gateway for me into a whole new world of better music. Perhaps I can get her to listen to more stuff and broaden her horizons some more.

Birthdays...Marty Robbins. Almost single-handedly brought the western back to C & W. He easily could have been a crooner. One of my all-time favorite songs -- The guy who wrote the song, Melvin Endsley, was from my home state (I never even heard the song, AFAIK, till I was about 40 & driving back into Little Rock from visiting my then-wife in New Orleans; I happened to have the local community radio station on, & they were airing a show that focused on Arkansas songwriters, at which point they played "Singin' the Blues"). The photography editor I used to sit by at the newspaper, who's my age (& who's pretty much a dead ringer for Zippy the Pinhead's Bill Griffith, but I digress), told me his mother had dated Endsley when they were kids. I like to think he later wrote the song about her, but of course who knows? Guy Mitchell's version apparently was the bigger hit. I'm not sure why.

The guitar playing on "El Paso" is just outstanding.

Guy Mitchell's version of "Singing the Blues" was at the top of the charts when I was born.
And Dan's favorites, the Grateful Dead, played "El Paso" regularly for many years.

Birthdays...Gillian Welch. One of the few female singers I actively like.

Nirvana was my favorite band back when I was around 13-15. The deeper cuts on Nevermind are actually the best songs on that album, like Lounge Act and Territorial Pissings.

I'm rather over "Nevermind" after playing it to death in high school- and the fact that at least half the songs still get regular radio play around here.
I can still enjoy some of "Bleach" and some of the stuff that never made it onto a proper album.

Yeah, I think I became permanently sick of most of "Nevermind" due to excessive overplay. My "Nevermind" receptors are just burnt out. I do like "Bleach" and a few cuts off of the later albums. Nirvana is depressing to listen to, too. Not because they'er bad, but you can feel the despair/depression/whatever downer vibe.
