Back with the Ms. And there are alot of Ms. Too many for one sitting so it'll be stretched out but always an interesting mix
M-With very rare exceptions, I stopped buying singles in 1967. Full albums for me. Therefore I have many LPs from artists who were one-hit wonders. Robin Scott toiled away throughout the 70s in the music biz, even being manager for an all-girl punk rock band, The Slits. In 1979 he changed his name to M,recorded an infectious synth-pop dance tune called "Pop Music". The single got radio airplay, an album was rapidly put together, I bought it, and Robin's subsequent music was ignored. The albums actually not bad, an interesting artifact to early synth/new wave
Madness-I preferred The Specials but Madness was a fine Ska Pop new Wave group. "One Step Beyond/Our House" got plenty of MTV airplay but Madness was more popular in Britain than the states. They released 6 albums between 1979-1986,disbanded for 2 years and then did reunion tours A fun group worthy to be in your collection
Mahogany Rush-Frank Marino was a struggling Canadian guitarist. The night Jimi Hendrix died, Frank woke up in a cold sweat, stumbled over to his guitar and miraculously started playing in the Hendrix style-or so the story goes. They released many albums in the 70s,constantly touring, and are totally forgotten I have their 1975 Strange Universe album, proving they once did exist
Mahavishnu Orchestra-Jazz/Fusion was a favorite genre of mine late 60s thru the 70s and the Mahavishnu Orchestra was my introduction to it.Guitarist John McLaughlin played Hendrix -inspired on a double neck (6 and 12 string) trading off riffs with violinist Jerry Goodman. Billy Cobham master percussionist, Jan Hammer and
his pioneering moog synthesizer, and Rick Laird on bass made up the original lineup. Their 2 studio albums 1971's Inner Mounting Flames and 1973's Birds of Fire are must-owns for this brand of music and they were quite successful commercially as well. Internal dissention broke the band up but McLaughlin continued adding replacements including Jean-Luc Ponty
Manchester, Melissa-MOR soft pop singer/songwriter. I have her 1975 album, either it was dirt cheap or I really liked her song "Midnight Blue" She also wrote "Don't Cry Out Loud". Yawn. I saw here booed off stage in the early 70s as an opening act for some hard-rock group. I felt bad for her because it wasn't what she did, it just was not her audience.
Manfred Mann-This band amazingly had 3 popular incarnations. And there is a member named Mannfred Mann. They first made the top of the charts with 1964's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" an earlier minor hit for The Exciters. They quickly followed up with Dylan covers,"Sha La La ","Pretty Flamingo" and " Oh No Not My Baby"
Musicians changed but then they scored again with 1968's "The Mighty Quinn" another Dylan composition. This was followed up by "My Name Is Jack" a song about the inhabitants of a mental institution. There was a line in the song about Super-Spade that got the record recalled. The line was replaced by Superman. What the hell, here's the lyrics
My name is Jack and I live in the back of the Greta Garbo home
With friends I will remember wherever I may roam
And my name is Jack and I live in the back
Of the Greta Garbo home for wayward boys and girls
We all love Jack ,we live in the back
Of the Greta Garbo home for wayward boys and girls
There goes Fred with his hands on his head cause he thinks he's heard the bomb
And here comes Superman who really puts it on
There's lots of fun and I love to run up and down the stairs
I make as much noise as I want and no one ever cares
There's Carl over there with his funny old hair and he's never sad at all
And when he I grow up I want to run as fast as my friend Paul
There's the prettiest girl in the whole wide world and her name is Melody Mend
And here comes ma with brother Tom who's probably my best friend
Well ,Tom is my best friend ,my best friend ,well ,Tom is my best friend
Anyhow the band broke up in 1969. But they re-incarnated in 1971 as a progressive rock band most known by their Springsteen covers "Blinded By The Light" and "Spirits in the Night "This version of the band lasted thru the 80s
Mangione,Chuck-Smooth Jazz legendary trumpeter . I bought his 1977 album Feels So Good whose song could be considered the most recognized smooth jazz song of all time
Mann, Aimee-I have 4 Aimee Mann CDs but no Til Tuesdays. I'm With Stupid is my favorite
Mann, Herbie-Jazz Flautist I bought his 1971 album Push Push because Duane Allman was the guitarist. Herbie was making records for over 50 years, pioneering world music and dabbling with rock. He played at many rock festivals and enlisted the talents of folks like Chick Correa,Larry Coryell,Cissy Houston, Donald 'Duck" Dunn, Chuck Rainey and Al Jackson. He had 25 albums that made Billboards Top 200 Chart
Manzarek,Ray-As a big Doors fan, I bought Ray's 1974 album Whole Thing Started With Rock N Roll. The title song was fun
Marie,Teena-Most popular white act for Motown records, she had genuine old school funkiness working with Rick James So much more genuine than Mariah Carey."Loverboy" from 1984 was her biggest hit. Died in 2010 of unknown causes
Mark-Almond-This is the duet of Jon Mark (guitar, vocals) and Johnny Almond (reeds). Acoustic folk/rock/jazz/fusion Light, melodic nice morning music. The Live 1973 album is an old favorite of mine
Listen to this youtube clip for a great driving bassline,congas,horns,wah-wah guitar-This one really rocks
