Anyone here reading . Attack on Titan ? I thought the premise was really neat, but then I actually read the first one, and it seemed like a standard Zombie story, only with the Zombies giant. Wondering if that's the case or it's more than that. Attack on Titan is probably one of the best mangas out there now. The mystery is so captivating and the characters are great.

I thought the 1st one was terrible... generic zombie crap, with giant zombies instead of the usual sized ones... half the characters died, and the others were indistinguishible from one another. I know it's super popular, but so it Walking Dead

I've gone back recently and looked at my Dragon Ball Z (Dragon Ball if we're being technical) collection. I have every manga volume from what would be considered "Z". Which is 28 out of 42. I'm such a fan of Toriyama's work especially in his later years when his style got more refined and more serious in tone. It really shows within his illustrations. Hopefully one day when I have some time I'll be able to check out some of his other work. I am looking to get into Bleach as I have the first few volumes and One Piece which I gave up at about 20 chapters in. This was like 10 years ago though and my perspective is a lot more refined than it used to be so I wouldn't mind giving it another shot. Both of those series though have been running for over 15 years so I might never catch up.

I grew up on the Dragon Ball Z anime when I was a kid so I've always liked the franchise. It wasn't until I was older that I actually read the manga and realized that there is actually a lot of cultural satire in it that I would have never picked up on as a kid.

I grew up in the late 90's with the doctored Ocean dub that was God awful. Little did I know. The turnaround in the last 15-20 years for American audiences and it's exposure to Japanese animation and manga has been a little better than I thought. With more communication on a global scale people have managed to grasp the scope and culture divide that this form of entertainment has brought to the table. Instead of being sheltered from it.

I haven't read them yet but I picked up Blue Exorcist and Deathnote. Years ago the manga I sampled was abrasive. Never heard of 20th Century Boys but wow does it get some raves.
Keeping an eye on this thread, and manga Star Wars sounds too cool, Dupont.

Rurouni Kenshin is pretty great too, though I hate the English dub of the anime.

Heh. I saw this thread, and I thought to myself "I'm going to pitch 20th Century Boys if no one's mentioned it yet, what a great series". And it's the first title mentioned in the thread! I'm actually only 13 volumes into it, though. I'm re-reading it now, it just so happens that it's one of the few manga titles our local smalltown library has in their collection. On a completely different note, a series I've also been enjoying very much, is Black Cat. It's about these two bounty hunters, one of which is an ex-member of a crime syndicate who used to be known as the Black Cat. The premise may sound very similar to the anime Cowboy Bebop, but it's a notch more light-hearted, and the main character is a cross between Spike Spiegel and Goku (he's always thinking about food). It's set on Earth, either in the present day or a bit into the future, not sure which. I was thinking about a thread like this as well. I have ZERO experience with manga, but while looking over a garage sale in my neighborhood last week I noticed a whole shelf of stuff being sold for $1 each. The girl running the sale mentioned all of the books were her sisters, who now lives in Hawaii and gave the green light to sell them off. I helped the seller organize the collection, telling her I thought she might have better luck grouping runs together. To make a long story short, I decided to make her an offer on a few series. I was immediately drawn to the first volume of Black Cat. Why, you ask? Style. A character on the cover sports a fedora and eye-patch, a cigarette dangles from his fingers. I needed to find out his story. Here is what I picked out after browsing. Black Cat...1-11 Satisfaction Guaranteed 1-4 Tokyo Babylon 1-7 (complete series) Ragnarok 1-10 (missing Vol. 4) She hooked me up with everything, plus a sweet Led Zep t-shirt, for $15. Following day she comes over to my house with the missing Ragnarok #4, which she stumbled upon after I left and said I deserved for helping her out. Started with Tokyo Babylon, think I'm going to like it. MT

yeah rule of thumb, always go with subtitles. lol I prefer subtitles but I think FUNimation has put out tons of great dubs in English. Unless we're talking Miyazaki. I kind of like the dubs the newer Disney editions have done. Not sure if they're done by Disney but the English dubs of Steamboy and Howl's Moving Castle were incredible.

Keeping an eye on this thread, and manga Star Wars sounds too cool, Dupont. I've been watching Blue Exorcist on Adult Swim.. it's not bad.. somewhat generic school-based story, but decent. Deathnote I really liked the first 9-10, I think (until a particular event happened), then it fell off quite a bit.. as if that was supposed to be the end of the story, but it was too popular and they decided to stretch it out.
