The anime story ends well before the manga, doesn't it?

Ten years ago I watched the Berserk anime series, which is a fantastically violent fantasy story. I then bought all the mangas, but the series got so dang dark and horrific that I sensed an evil aura while reading. I had to stop at that point, my conscious wouldn't let me explore the series any further.
I have not read much of any manga since Berserk, although I did buy the full run of Cobra by Viz Comics recently. I also want to watch the Attack on Titan anime series when I get a chance.

Deadman Wonderland is so dark and depressing, yet your really root for the main character to make it through his ordeal. I didn't like the anime ending though. I enjoyed the manga a lot. A good bit of ultra violence with an interesting story and lots of characterization. The anime story ends well before the manga, doesn't it? I thought there was only one season and yeah it doesn't complete the story.

Maybe this threat should be retitled manga and anime? Seems like it's impossible to discuss one without the other a lot of the time because of the correlative narratives in most adaptions.

Speaking of ultra violence I remember enjoying the Fist of the North Star manga although I never finished it. The Riki-Oh manga was similar but I found the ending a bit underwhelming.

The last couple of pages have me asking, is it better to read the manga or watch the anime ?
For the most part, I prefer the "private version" in my head. There are exceptions of course like the excellent classic Akira.
What do you guys recommend ?
Kind of in the same Gaijin camp as Shax diverting my attention and feeling like I'm not getting the full experience.

I read way more manga than I watch anime, but I think it really depends on the story. If it were me, I'd go with the original, which i think more often than not is going to be manga. There's also the case of books, like DeathNote, that are predominately talking heads. I tried watching the anime, and while it wasn't bad, it just felt slow and unnecessary.

I think it depends on the story.. some Manga are better, some Anime are better. It's not even always what comes out first, IMO.
Read vol. 4 of Vinland Saga today (got in 6 days pre-release... sometimes it's great working at a book store)... it continues to have awesome art, and the story comes to a very nice, satisfying conclusion, then sets up the next art nicely. This one is quickly moving up the ranks as one of my favorites.

Usually the manga is better (same for like books and movie adaptations), but I prefer the anime because it's entertaining...except when they do filler episodes haha

Just watched the first episode of Karneval on FUNimation On Demand and was pretty impressed. I've never heard anything about this anime. Has anyone else watched it or read the manga?

Cowboy Bebop is definitely better in anime, Trigun is a bit of a mixed bag, I like somethings better in the manga and some things better in the anime. I like both well enough though.

Eh, I meant to say Cowboy Bebop is definitely better in anime. (D'oh!).
I have started on Black Butler, which so far seems a mix of Hellsing and Fullmetal Alchemist.
I've finished Doubt, which was a short manga series (4 issues, but there is a follow-up), but I didn't like it.
