I'm moving along pretty quickly! It is not hard at all to read two or three issues of Kamandi every day, even when I'm kind of busy. So that's why I'm up to #20 already!
I am greatly enjoying reading Kamandi in sequence! These are such great comics! When I was a kid, reading Kirby 1970s Marvel comics, I remember thinking that Kirby had peaked in the 1960s. (Even though I liked Kirby's Black Panther and seldom missed his Captain America.)
But now that I've read more Fourth World comics and Kamandi and I've learned to appreciate Devil Dinosaur and Machine Man, I'm thinking that he was still going strong in the 1970s, as good as ever, and not content to keep doing the same thing over and over.
We're starting off with Kamandi #7 today, ad I've mentioned before this is one of my favorite comics of all time! It's just so crazy! Kamandi is capture by gorillas who offer him as a sacrifice to a gigantic ape named Tiny. And Tiny is hilarious! He talks! And he refers to himself in the third person! And all he wants is a toy to love!
He's understandably quite hurt when his toy Kamandi doesn't seem tp appreciate his affection. When I first read this - 7 or 8 years ago - I made up a voice in my head for Tiny. Not just deep and gruff, but also a hint of Tiny's near-shrieking desperation! If you ever read Kamandi #7, try to hear Tiny's voice!
Then in Kamandi #8 to #10, Kamandi is reunited with Ben Boxer, Renzi and Steve and we finally find out the secret of Tracking Site! It's a small manmade satellite floating around in Earth's atmosphere above the wasteland that used to be Central America. And they constantly under attack by savage bat-people! And for some reason, Ben, Renzi and Steve share Tracking Site with a malicious little big-headed mutate called the Misfit! Plus there's a killer germ the size of a banana that will destroy all life on Earth if it gets out! How will the guys get out of this predicament when the Misfit decides to release the killer germ during an attack by the bat-people?
It's all in great fun!
Next is The Sacker's Saga (as I call it) in Kamandi #11 to #14. Kamandi is captured by Leopard-pirates who work for Sacker, a giant snake who runs a department store and sponsors a yearly anything-goes race at the Hialeah racetrack. Kamandi runs into Spirit, Flower's identical twin sister! And he makes an enemy of Bull Bantam, One of the humans in the race who wants to win the prize ... because that means he gets to have Spirit as his mate!
But Kamandi befriends a giant devil grasshopper named Kliklak! And maybe just maybe he can beat Bull Bantam, win the race by riding Kliklak and escape with Spirit!
Here's Kliklak!
I think The Sacker's Saga is my favorite Kamandi storyline.
Then there's a couple of one-shots. #15 and #16 are both pretty weird. Even for Kamandi. #15 is about a group of gorillas who worship Watergate!
And #16 offers a few clues about how the animals became intelligent. But an awful lot of the story - most of the last half of the issue - is text boxes in cursive from the journal of the human scientist who developed Cortexin, the drug that made the animals intelligent. I found it to be a bit of a drag. I sort of forced myself to read the whole thing just so I'm not skipping anything as I read every issue of Kamandi.
But we're back on track pretty quickly in #17 and #18 as Kamdandi visits Ohio! Where he meets more gorillas, human gophers and THE EATER!
And in Kamandi #19 and #20, Kirby once again indulges his interest in 1920s gangster culture (as he did in Fantastic Four #90 to #93 and In the Days of the Mob) with the last boy on Earth's visit to a gangland Chicago amusement park that's still operational ... and still very dangerous!
