i effin' love radio plays.
and voice-art.
and the differentials given to voices depending on a shotgun mic or a samsontech Cardioid mic.
so, i'm hoping we can share sound-art stuff here, tips, tricks, etc., as this site has podcasts and Confessor has a kick-arse voice.

i mean, more than several people here have said 'i have no talent for writing or art'.
that doesn't mean you have no talent for COMICS.
Seth McFarlane can't draw his way out of a soggy paper bag; his success came from 'having that voice and vocal-inflection'.
see where i'm going here?

I'm less into radio plays, but I obviously know a thing or two about sound engineering, given the many hours I've spent in recording studios or using Pro Tools at home and doing live concert sound. Currently, for home recording I use an AKG C414 large diaphragm condensor microphone for voice and an AKG C1000 S small diaphragm condenser mic for acoustic guitar, plugged into an Avid Mbox audio interface, which is then connected to my Apple MacBook. I get pretty good results with this set up. Here's a link to a demo recording of me doing a cover of the old Danny Whitten song "I Don't Want To Talk About It" (popularised in the 1970s by Rod Stewart). This recording was made using the C414 and C1000s mics... soundcloud.com/weathertop-preachers/i-dont-want-to-talk-about-it

that's FAB. LOVE it, and i don't even like the original version you're covering. Is this your 'current' voice vs your 90's voice?

also love how you choose to employ vibrato on the vocals then 'not'.

Is this your 'current' voice vs your 90's voice? Yeah, pretty much. My voice has changed quite a bit over the years. I cover a lot of Americana stuff nowadays and you can't really do that in a Britpop, sub-cockney accent. also love how you choose to employ vibrato on the vocals then 'not'. I hate too much vibrato in rock/pop. It's a real pet hate.

please don't self-deprecate, lol. James Spader's voice began in the 80's, but became 'yum yum' during Boston Legal. you hit the notes with this yet there's more texture and nuance than in the 90's clip.

the clarity of your voice over 20 plus years, to my ear, is 'mighty'. did you take steps to preserve your vocal quality? quit cigs, limit hard spirits, refuse to cry out too loudly at concerts and 'all-too-fun-Con-Party-jams, etc.?

No, I smoked heavily for 22 or so years until about 7 years ago. I've never done anything to protect my voice or anything to train it. I've never had singing lessons or anything like that, I've just always been able to sing reasonably well.
