#5. The Surtur SagaThor #337-353  Walt Simonson turned the entire Thor mythos on its ear right from his first issue, as beta Ray Bill shows up and defeats Thor, proving himself worthy of lifting the hammer in the process. That's just the start of a saga that eventually brings back the fire demon Surtur, who seeks to start Ragnarok and destroy Asgard in the process.  The final battle involves massive armies invading Earth, facing off against the combined might of Earth's armed forces led by the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, while Odin, Thor, and Loki team up to take on Surtur in the ruins of Asgard. It's just incredibly epic.

5. The Authority V1 1-12 Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch
 This came at an interesting time for me, after 20 odd years of rabidly devouring every comic I could lay my addicted little fingers on, I was getting burnt out, who'd a thunk I would get bored with superheroes, and being the 90s and all, well just about everything was shite. I didnt like much at DC, the heroes had returned to Marvel (which I bought into for a year or so), but apathy and growing family saw my buying shrink to 3 titles(and within months to zero). With its sister(?) title Planetary(which I heavily considered) this book blew me away, the multiversal characters, the ship, the Bleed...all with Hitch's amazingly detailed work and I was like a pig in ... a delightful playpen ...ahem.  As much as anything else here I loved Midnighter and Apollo, 2 strong, proud gay men, where their sexuality isnt an issue for anyone else in the team. I like how this was handled as straight forwardly as any of the relationships in the book, well from my straight white male high horse it seemed that way. I hope that those within the gay community saw them the same way.  Midnighter was such a cool badass mofo too...  |

Avengers vs Defenders. Avengers 115, 116, 117, 118, Defenders 8, 9, 10, 11.
Let's geeeeet ready to ruuuuuuuumble!!! Because Steve Englehart started the summer epic crossover event here. As he was writing both series at the time he came up with the sensational idea to having both teams fight each other, and not just in a simple versus match but in an alternating in each series each month grandiose fight for the life of a hero. Loki and Dormammu have united in hopes of finding the Evil Eye and gaining ultimate power. Loki sets the Avengers on a quest to retrieve all the parts of the eye while his evil cohort Dormammu sends the Defenders. Classic (and not so classic) match ups ensue: Hawkeye vs Iron Man, Cap vs Namor, Swordsman vs Enchantress, Vision/Scarlet Witch vs Silver Surfer, Black Panther vs Doctor Strange and Thor vs Hulk as each team given false information fight one another only to unite in the end confronting both villains (and failing to save the Black Knight) as one of the most formidable group of super powers on Earth.
Who could resist this story? 2 issues a month? So many heroes? 2 Classic Villains? Your favorite heroes in struggle against one another? Is it too good to be true? What could have failed miserably actually turns out to being a famous cross over with a strong story and interesting fights. While some may consider the art to being mediocre from Sal Buscema and Bob Brown (current artists for Defenders and Avengers) they both did a stellar job juggling so many characters in a 8 issue summer mini-event.

It's the very first time they had a crossover between two books and heroes mixing it up like this wasn't as common as it is today. |

Totally correct it is about being there at the time. As a kid only buying a few comics here and there as you could afford them there was the quarter of a page ads for several months hyping this big cross-over for the 2 teams. And it was the 1st ever cross title connecting so totally new and the thrill of waiting and hunting to finding both issues of Avengers and Defenders each month. And it had a true story that brought both teams into meeting with 2 of the biggest villains around who had connections to the teams. Marvel always had their heroes mixing it up, but here there was more connection and reason for them to toss it up against each other. The Black Knight was in peril and you had the deceiving Loki trying to usurp Dormammu and playing the Avengers as fools which he hadn't really done since their premiere issue. Add in that you had several of the Defenders being ex-Avengers and or allies of them in the past and suddenly you understand that there has to be a good reason for them to fight one another. This was pure magic and golden treasure at the time of it's publication. And there was no collected reprint as a trade in 3-5 months, so you either hunted and found them on the rack or you were out of luck as it would be several more years before LCS were coming around. And even then there wasn't a lot of hope of finding the issues. You youngsters are spoiled and got it easy today. Why when i was a youngster i had to walk, bicycle, trade with cousins or neighbors and wait until i learned to drive to get my comics fix!!!  |

Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon #1-66 (plus 5 specials and a 4-issue miniseries)  An Irishman writes about the American myth and journey in a way that no American is likely to ever be able. This book is about love, friendship and redemption. It's about facing your Gods and if you find them failing, pissing in their eye. It's so full of absolutely perfect MOMENTS that even when it occasionally goes off the rails it doesn't matter. Because those moments keep everything going. And it emphasizes that there is a problem with weak chins. {Spoiler: Click to show}

That was so much fun! I didn't care about Bob Brown's art, but it was serviceable. My only real gripe is that even as a kid I though it ridiculous that the Silver Surfer could have any problem handling Vision and the Scarlet Witch. I mean, it's the Silver Surfer! The guy Thor calls for help when he can't handle Durok the demolisher! |
