Adventure Comics #435-437, 441-452. Aquaman #57-63. This story started in Adventure Comics in summer 1974 as back ups then became the lead feature one year later. It then led to Aquaman's solo title being revived summer 1977. The story concluded a year later. It built slowly. It all started as a 7 page back up in Adventure Comics #435. The Spectre by Fleisher & Aparo was the lead feature at that time. Adventure Comics #435. Written by Steve Skeates. Art by Mike GrellAquaman returns to Atlantis & finds the farmers outside the city asleep. He comes across Black Manta who has been drugging the farmers & stealing Atlantis' food supply. Aquaman prepares himself by wearing scuba gear to prevent being drugged by the chemicals Manta puts into the water. He overcomes Manta and in the last panel thinks to himself that him & Manta are heading to "one big, final showdown". The story was only 7 pages but packed in a decent story that foreshadowed an upcoming horrible confrontation between Aquaman & Manta. Mike Grell's art was amazing as always.

Adventure Comics #436. Written by Steve Skeates. Art by Mike Grell.Aqualad disagrees with Aquaman using a robot as a stand in at state functions. An inventor named Weisbogg made the robot. Aqualad leaves Atlantis & is attacked a by a creature called the Bugala. Aquaman uses the robot to greet the Canadian ambassador as he goes out to fight the Bugala. However he discovers the Bugala is also a robot & returns to Atlantis to destroy the Aquaman robot. The transmitter controlling the Bugala was inside. Arthur confronts Weisbogg who refuses to reveal who the mastermind was behind the plan. The last panel shows Black Manta cursing Aquaman for ruining his plan. Another 7 page story that has more foreshadowing as Manta talks about an upcoming battle. More great Grell art.

Adventure Comics #437. Written by Paul Levitz. Art by Mike Grell. The 3rd (& last) back up in Adventure. Levitz takes over as writer. Aquaman is out swimming examining his kingdom & is attacked again by Black Manta. He becomes trapped in a cave-in but finds an exit that is blocked by a hideous monster. He escapes & ends up in an Atlantean hospital bed exhausted. Levitz took over as writer & would continue as writer when Aquaman became the lead feature in Adventure 441. This would be Grell's last story on art as Aparo would take over art with 441. This story felt like an interlude. It would take a few more issues for Levitz to develop & build the long term story line.

Script by Paul Levitz and David Michelinie. Cover & art by Jim Aparo.Aquaman becomes the lead feature. Capt Demo threatens Aquaman & Atlantis. And Demo succeeds! He has hidden bombs throughout Atlantis. Aquaman surrenders to Demo until he finds a way to stop him from detonating the bombs. Which he does but Demo escapes capture. This issue felt like a fill in. Next issue Levitz would begin to build the long term story involving Manta. And while I liked Grell's art it was awesome to see Aparo back doing the art.

This comic was fully scripted by David Michelinie, and lettered by Jim Aparo. Before publication, Paul Levitz re-wrote the script, and Ben Oda re-lettered the new script, pasting over Jim's work. I discovered this when I found a page of the original art, and peeled off the Oda lettering.

Mike Grell & Jim Aparo ... are my two favorite Aquaman's artists back then and still is. Looking really good so far and I try to contribute when I can.

I didn't catch Aquaman at the end of this run and kinda wondering about that. That's why I like Aquaman in the Silver Age and rightly so.

@mechagodzilla this is my favorite Newton cover: I did not know that he did the Phantom ... I read a lot of the Phantom and never, ever bothered with who did what. I was more concerned about the Story than the Art back then.

Script by Paul Levitz. Art by Jim Aparo.
A group of terrorists highjack a ship carrying nuclear material. Meanwhile Aquaman is feeling pulled in too many directions with being in the JLA & being King of Atlantis. General Horgan from NATO calls Aquaman to tell him about the terrorist situation since NATO will blow up the ship & the radioactive material will sink below to Atlantis.
Aquaman stops NATO's missile angering Horgan. He also stops the terrorists. Meanwhile back in Atlantis unrest as the people want a new king. In the last panel Aquaman decides to go & confront Horgan....
Levitz starts to sprinkle in seeds of upcoming subplots with the unrest in Atlantis & Aquaman's feud with Horgan plus Arthur's uncertainty of being a superhero & a king.
