First, the Chan Count: Ernie "Chua" Chan is credited as penciling 12 out of 30 DC comics covers this month, but I'll eat my hat if he's not responsible for detailed layouts on Action Comics 460 (Oksner) and Superman 300 (Swan/Oksner). Neither of those guys did that kind of lumpy musculature that makes the characters look like the Remco Archie superhero toys of the 80's. I've got a suspicion that Chan also laid out a few more covers this month, which have a lot of minimal backgrounds (Kung Fu Fighter, Metal Men, Brave & Bold for example). It looks like DC might be starting to reduce its reliance on Chan for covers, with Giordano and Garcia-Lopez doing three each, and Dominguez doing four. I'm starting to really resent Chan's dominance of DC's covers in the 70's. I think they were detrimental to the appeal of the line. At the time, I'd grown to pretty much ignoring the covers, myself, realizing that they were rarely indicative of the quality or content of the interiors.
And now, my purchases in March, 1976: DC: Brave & Bold 127 I wasn't thrilled to have Wildcat again, but it's B&B...always good! Hercules Unbound 5 This book had so much potential. It was starting to lose focus, though. Kobra 3 Inconsistent, but different enough to be attractive. Metal Men 26 I got sold on the Metal Men reprints I'd seen, and kept buying this to the end. Plastic Man 13 Same as with Metal Men. I could tell that this didn't compare well to Jack Cole's originals Superboy & the Legion 217 Loved the Legion! Swamp Thing 23 This series' decline was starting to make me very sad...
Marvel: Champions 6 New super-teams were an easy sell. Defenders 36 Automatic buy for me. Doc Savage 4 This B&W series was Doc's best run in comics. Very much like the pulps. Fantastic Four Annual 11 The FF and the Invaders? This was what passed for an "event comic" back then! Inhumans 5 Never a great book, but it kept me hooked.
Marvel Chillers 5 Marvel Premiere 30 Marvel Presents 5 Marvel Spotlight 28 Marvel Teamup 46 Marvel Two-In-One 16 - It was an exciting time for new features at Marvel, with Tigra, Liberty Legion, Guardians, and Moon Knight. Marvel's team books kept drawing my interest even though I never really loved them. Seeing Deathlok in MTU was nice, and I always kind of liked Ben's guest star Ka-Zar, who was in MTIO this time around (I wasn't consistently buying Ka-Zar's solo title, though, since I skipped it this month).
Planet of the Apes 20 POTA was always an unquestioned buy. Son of Satan 4 I was waiting for it to get as good as the first installments. It disappointed. Super-Villain Team-Up 6 Oddball enough to be irresistible.
Tomb of Dracula 25 Warlock 13 X-Men 99 Marvel was really shining with these three titles, genuine standouts.

Purchased at the time...
Marvel Team-Up 46 (I had no idea what was going on)
Shazam 24 (I suspect the TV show had a lot to do with this purchase)
Have since read a whole passel. But that's what I bought at the time.

comics I bought at the time and remember something about:
Avengers #148 - love the Englehart/Perez run and still regret it didn't continue longer. Captain America #198 - Kirby's underrated Madbomb saga continues Conan the Barbarian #63 - the Amra multi-part story isn't a favourite of mine but CtB was never less than solid Daredevil #134 - not a great period for this series, but there were a few good issues here and there; this wasn't one of them, AFAIR. Defenders #36 - Gerber's Headmen multi-issue story was probably the peak of his Defenders run, which is saying quite a lot. Inhumans #5 - decent series but not as good as an Inhumans series should have been Marvel Presents #5 (Guardians of the Galaxy) - more Gerber; remember enjoying this at the time but not much in the way of detail has stuck with me. Marvel Spotlight #28 (Moon Knight) - still think they should go back to the Don Perlin MK, evn if just as a variation from the Batman-style cloak Tomb of Dracula #45 - it's sad that the movie versions of both Blade and Hannibal King are so inferior to the ones Wolfman & Colan gave readers in the comics Warlock #13 - the Star-Thief two-parte was a pause between the Magus and the Thanos epics. X-Men #99 - early days of the Claremont X-Men;
Doctor Strange #15 I missed because it never came to our area - distribution was a killer back then.
I think the same is true of some or all of the following:
Amazing Spider-Man #157 Black Goliath #3 Champions #6 Doc Savage #4 Ka-Zar #16 Swamp Thing #23
because I know I was reading all those series at the time but none of this month's covers rings a bell. It's possible I read some of them and they just haven't left an impression after all these years.

At the time, I'd grown to pretty much ignoring the covers, myself, realizing that they were rarely indicative of the quality or content of the interiors. I agree. And the DC covers had weak pastel colored backgrounds that made them even more unappealing. And I think they had the single DC logo in the center of the masthead which I didn't like and they had some kind of Bi-Centennial logo also. I wasn't buying any regular comics at this time because most of my favorite artists had left. I was probably buying Warren mags at this time.

The Chan Count: Ernie "Chua" Chan is credited penciller for 11 out of 33, a full one third of DC covers in April 1976, and as inker for another (Giffen's Claw the Unconquered #8). And I'll eat my hat if he didn't lay out Action #461 (supposedly by Oksner) and Superman 301 (Garcia-Lopez & Oksner), as well as a few others, such as Giordano's Blackhawks cover and Garcia-Lopez's Tarzan #251. Others may like Chan's work, but I'd bet at least of few of his covers--such as this month's JLA #132--actually cost the book a lot of sales. Justice League of America vs. zoo animals?
I bought these from DC off the spinner rack: Action Comics #461: Aparo Aquaman--done deal! All-Star Comics #61: JSA--easy sell! Brave and the Bold #128--Aparo draws Mr. Miracle, my favorite of Kirby's characters! Freedom Fighters #3--I was a sucker for new super-teams and Golden Age revivals Joker #8--It was far out to have this guy in his own comic! Plop #22--I could tell it was winding down. Secret Society of Super-Villains #2--another weird super-team. World's Finest #218--Guest starring Gold of the Metal Men...hunh?
From Marvel, I bought: Astonishing Tales #36--cool, cool Deathlok! Captain America Annual #3--Kirby! Defenders #37--every month! Eternals #1--I was hyped for this, and loved it. Howard the Duck #4--On board for the full run of this one... Omega the Unknown #3--...and this one... Planet of the Apes #21--...and this one... Skull the Slayer #6--...and this one! Tomb of Dracula #46--once I got on board, this is one series that never, ever let me down.
COMIC OF THE MONTH: Brave & Bold #128: I loved this cover, these guest stars, this artist, and this series. This was one of the best issues in months. COVER OF THE MONTH: Kid Colt Outlaw #208: A new Gil Kane western masterpiece with Colt lying gunned down in the street COMIC I'D MOST LIKE TO OBTAIN: Ringo Kid #28: Another new Gil Kan cover, almost as good as Kid Colt's. I've developed a big appreciation for Marvel's western reprint series, and this one reprinted work by John Severin, so I'd be confident of getting some satisfying artwork. COMIC WTF: Walt Disney's Moby Duck #23: I don't remember ever knowing about the existence of this member of Disney's Duck Family, but he had his own series for (at least) 23 issues?!

This month contains the first (or second?) superhero comic I ever bought - Fantastic Four #172! In addition, I'd picked up Avengers #149 (in a trade with a friend back in the late 70's), Superboy #218 and JLA # 132 (both as back issues at the LCS probably around 1979 or so)
