Comic on sale in February 1977 oh what a time for comics for me... Avengers 159 Graviton! early in one of my favorite runs of Avengers of all time... Black Panther #3 inherited this from a neighbor shortly after this month, and it was my first exposure to raw 70s Kirby. So different than the Panther running with the Avengers in #159... Captain Marvel #50 -Marvel cosmic was mind blowing for my 7 soon to be 8 year old self... Marvel Triple Action #35-I was already getting into classic Avengers with this title, oh my the Red Guardian... Not a lot of comics form this month, but they all had a profound effect on my little mind at the time... -M

Always exhilarating to read of other posters' excitement about their early days as comics readers. I'm talking about you, @mrp and brutalis ! For me, older, wiser, poorer in early '77, I had to become choosy, so my buying was always divided between old favorites and fringe titles that I hoped would become successful. I spent my $7.00 thusly: (DC) Adventure (Aquaman); All-Star (JSA); Batman; Batman Family; B and B; Black Lightning; DC Special; Freedom Fighters; Jonah Hex; JLA; Superboy and the Legion; and Weird Western (Scalphunter). (Marvel) Conan; Defenders; Howard the Duck; Invaders; MOKF; Omega; Red Sonja; Tomb of Dracula; and believe it or not, Weird Wonder Tales with Dr. Druid! Oh, left out the most significant comic of the month, Detective 369. I've written before about the mid-70s at DC, the Ernie Chua/Chan Era of lackluster covers and stories to match. (Poor Ernie: he doesn't deserve all the blame, but it was his omni-presence as the DC cover artist that became the symbol of DC's mostly vapid output.) My eyes lit up when I saw something unique, different and hopeful in Detective 469: a startling Aparo cover reminiscent of the legendary Batman 180, highlighted by an equally creepy villain; two inter-related stories reminiscent of the legendary Batman 156; and the names of Steve Engelhart and Walt Simonson inside. ![](http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/marvel_dc/images/e/e5/Batman_156.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/338?cb=20160623004905) This little oasis of creativity gave me cause to hope that maybe something good was about to happen! Little did I realize the return to glory heralded by Detective 469...

Forty years ago, I bought... From DC:
Adventure Comics #451 : Aparo Aquaman=instant sell! All-Star Comics #66 : I was happy to see the Justice Society logo on the cover. I was much more appealing than the sloppy giant All-Star Comics featuring the Super Squad. No one ever called them the "Super Squad" anyway! Things like this remind me how important logos were to me back then. A logo change was a big deal, and could often entice me into trying a comic I wouldn't usually buy. Batman Family #11 : I think it was the new Man-Bat series that got me to pick this one up. I'd liked his aborted solo comic. Black Lightning #2 : I continued to give this new character a try. Brave and the Bold #134 : Batman and Green Lantern--not my favorite B&B co-star, but lack of enthusiasm for a pairing never stopped me. DC Super Stars #14 : "Secret Origins of Super-Villains"--that was an interesting idea, well worth a look, especially since it had one of my favorites, Two-Face. I remember thinking it odd that Gorilla Grodd's origin featured Green Lantern instead of the Flash. Freedom Fighters #8 : I kept trying to love this team book featuring Golden Age revivals. Justice League of America #142 : Steven Englehart continued to make JLA a must-read book again. Secret Society of Super-Villains #7 : It never became the book I wanted, but I kept with it to the end. From Marvel:
2001: A Space Odyssey #6 : Neither was this book ever the book I wanted, but I enjoyed it. Champions #13 : I kept buying, but this team wasn't clicking. Defenders #47 : I loved the book, but not this era. Still, it kept things interesting with new "members" like Moon Knight, here. Eternals #11 : I loved this series at the time, but I don't have as much love for it now. Howard the Duck #12 : Loved Howard, but I always felt Colan was wrong for this. I think it may have been because the humans, as rendered so effectively by Colan, were often so grubby and scuzzy-looking to me. Logan's Run #5 : In a world without videotapes, this was a way to relive a film favorite. Omega the Unknown #8 : I admit I was a little lost, but I kept trying. Tomb of Dracula #56 : This continued to be one of the best books on the stands.
Total cost: $5.70 Overview: Not a great month, as I don't find many of these issues memorable, so most were habit buys. It looks like my buying was balanced about equally between Marvel and DC at this time, with both having attracted me to new series over the past year. I was beginning more to look forward to being surprised by new series being announced than getting invested in the ones I was already buying, as I understood now that cancellation was a realistic risk, but that something new would replace whatever might be lost.
Favorite of the Month: Adventure #451. I was impressed at Aquaman dealing with Starro the Conquerer on his own, and I was getting a kick out of seeing Manhunter from Mars in his own feature. Comic I'd Most Want to Own but Don't: Detective Comics #469. As much as I loved (and love) Jim Aparo's work, I couldn't afford to buy issues just because he did the cover. And I had no idea that Englehart was writing some of the best Batman stories ever here. I would catch on in a month or so.
Cover of the Month: House of Mystery #252. I've never been a huge Neal Adams fanatic, not even back in the 70's, but this cover is terrific!

February '77. I'd been buying my own comics for a while. I believe I was in third grade. I'm really surprised I only bought one book from this month...though maybe it makes sense from the time period. Birthday and Christmas money would have run out. And I suspect I wasn't in a position to get into town very much in February of '77. It's also very likely I got books for my birthday and Christmas that were taking time to read.
Bought off the spinner racks.
Marvel Tales 79. I was huge on Spider-Man and loved me some Green Goblin.

2001, a Space Odyssey #7 | $0.30 | This was what I'd been waiting for: following one of the monolith-transformed "New Seeds" beyond the ending of the movie. Kirby didn't deliver exactly what I anticipated, but it was fun to see. | Challengers of the Unknown #81 | $0.35 | I didn't really like the Challengers, but a series revival was too tempting to pass up. | Defenders #48 | $0.30 | The Scorpio issues by David Kraft and Keith Giffen remain, for me, some of the most memorable. Even though I wasn't really thrilled about the non-team-s line-up, including Moon Knight, these issues stuck with me. | Doc Savage #8 | $1.00 | Doc's time at Marvel comes to a close. I was very enthusiastic about the concept at the time, and these magazines felt a lot like the novels, with enough room to tell a very satisfying story. I liked Ernie Chan's work here more than I usually did (I've re-read this one in the last month!) | Eternals #12 | $0.30 | I was loving Kirby's take on Greek Myth and the Ancient Astronauts hooey. | Hercules Unbound #11 | $0.35 | I liked this book a lot, and didn't know it was winding down. Simonson's take on the character was impressive. | Howard The Duck #13 | $0.30 | I kept going with Howard, and mostly enjoying it. It certainly provided plenty of reading value for my three dimes. I still didn't much like Colan here. | Inhumans #11 | $0.30 | I felt like I should like this, but it's probably my least favorite of Doug Moench's work around this time. Still, I kept buying. | John Carter, Warlord of Mars #1 | $0.30 | Marvel gets the ERB licences, and I'm there to give it a try, despite not caring much for Carter. | Justice League of America #143 | $0.60 | Englehart was still doing the most exciting JLA stories ever. These felt important. | Logan's Run #6 | $0.30 | Next best thing to VHS for a favorite movie, back then. | Marvel Premiere #36 | $0.30 | 3-D Man looked fascinating, but wasn't. | Marvel Presents #11 | $0.30 | I stuck with this, I think because I had actually picked up a copy of their first appearance somewhere. But I didn't really like this much, especially since Gerber was gone | Metal Men #52 | $0.35 | I was intrigued by the Metal Men, but didn't much care for Joe Staton's cartoony style. | Plastic Man #18 | $0.35 | Plas was another character I felt somehow devoted to, as if he deserved my purchase, even if the comic felt lightweight. | Ragman #5 | $0.35 | I was completely fascinated with this character design. | Rampaging Hulk #3 | $1.00 | I loved this retro Hulk, with Simonson/Alcala art and writer Doug Moench bringing a rather intimidating Metal Master. | Shade, the Changing Man #1 | $0.35 | How could I resist this weirdness? | Super-Team Family #11 | $0.60 | The original Flash/Supergirl team-up! Who would have dreamed we'd see that on tv forty years later? | Super-Villain Team-Up #12 | $0.30 | This was one Marvel team-up title I stuck with. Inconsistent, and never what I really wanted, but still satisfying. | Tarzan #1 | $0.30 | I didn't really like Tarzan much, but I gave this a try. Buscema's work was so ubiquitous that this series didn't feel very special to me. Ho-hum. | Teen Titans #48 | $0.35 | I loved the Titans, so I kept with this, even though I knew it was bottom-of-the-barrel stuff. This just had a dingy, unappealing overall vibe. | Tomb of Dracula #57 | $0.30 | TOD never let me down. | What If #3 | $0.50 | What If the Avengers Had Never Been? Probably my favorite issue of the run, with Stark creating his own Iron Avengers. I can still visual many of the Kane/Janson panels. | World's Finest Comics #245 | $1.00 | I got this to see the finale of the Martian Manhunter's mini-revival that had been running through a few different places. Fun to see the Gray Morrow Vigilante back-up, but the GA/BC and WW back-ups didn't move me. | X-Men #105 | $0.30 | I was totally on the bandwagon with this. It was worthy. | Total Cost: | $11.05 | Even with some disappointments, this was a real bargain! |
Comic of the Month: Rampaging Hulk #3. It broke my heart when this retcon B&W run came to an end, but while it was running strong, this was one of the strongest! Cover of the Month: DC Special #28. This may be my favorite Al Milgrom cover ever, helped along by an awesome one-shot logo! ![](http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq168/MWGallaher/dcspecial28_zpsycvlvkur.jpg) Comic I Don't Own But Would Most Like To: Detective Comics #470. I was soon to wise up to the good stuff going on here!

As best I can tell the only comic I bought this month forty years ago was Teen Titans 48. I have to think it was because Two-Face was so prominent on the cover. Not sure why only one, but I'd guess it was because I just didn't get to town much in the middle of winter.
