June 1980 was another month in which I had a big stack of comics (about 15 titles), but really, everything in that stack paled in comparison to this: The double-sized conclusion to the Dark Phoenix saga really delivered; I still remember the emotional impact that book had on me back then. I re-read that issues (and the issues leading up to it) several times that month. It's still one of the best multi-issue sagas in a superhero book.

And yeah, I'm with EdoBosnar - everything paled in comparison to X-Men #137. That cover is forever burned into my brain.

June 1980: high school is out, graduated and enjoyed a spectacular 3 day California school trip. Time to relax for the summer? Nope it is my 1st official job hiring on at the local Grocery store chain Smitty's which was a big deal here in Phoenix. 17 year old me is now a checkout bag boy packaging up groceries into brown bags for buyers and carting them out and loading into their cars for minimum wage while riding the bus to work in the afternoon working 3-9 and dad picking me up at night when the store closes. Will spend 11 years with Smitty's, working in dang near all 23 of them across Phoenix at some point since I was young, hungry for $$ while starting College and I was one of those crazy people with a work ethic (thanks folks) who actually wanted to do my job at work and earn my way up the ladder (it will pay off in 2 months: tell you in August!) and having pride in my work. With my 1st 2 paychecks I saved to spend on my 1st color television set for me and my brothers bedroom this month! We are now a 2 television family and I can finally enjoy watching shows when I want and not around my parents viewing schedule. Saturday day and nights were now spent watching local channels 5 in morning/afternoon for The World Beyond showing sciene fiction movies, followed by Action Theater and then Adventure Theater with westerns. Channel 21, a religious station during the day which ran G rated movies at night with EVERY Saturday at 6pm a 2 hour horror hosted show showing the classic good and not so good and downright horrible movies of the past.
Fresh off the spinner racks: Avengers 199 Batman 327 Battlestar Galactica 19 Captain America 249 Cerebus 17 Daredevil 166 FF 222 Hulk 252 Iron Man 138 LOSH 267 Marvel Spotlight 8 MTIO 67 MOKF 92 Micronauts 21 ROM 10 Shogun Warriors 20 Spectacular Spider-Man 46 Spider-Woman 30 Star Trek 6 Star Wars 39 Thor 299 Warlord 37 X-Men 137

Amazing Spider-Man #208, which i barely remember. I just recall it's one of those books I could buy while visiting Grandma. I had fallen out of love with Spider-Man shortly before issue #200.
Avengers #199, with that favourite of mine, Red Ronin (previously seen in the Godzilla comic). Man, did Perez draw an amazing cast! And all that lovely rubble everywhere! This issue was definitely influential in my getting a subscription, a few months later... but the first issue I got by mail had artwork by Gene Colan!!!
Battlestar Galactica #19, still with the excellent Walt Simonson artwork. Walyt might have been told to stop using the actors' likenesses in this book, but he still made the characters recognizable.
Conan #114. After the disappointment that was the "Sons of the Bear God" story arc, what a difference a Robert E. Howard adaptation makes! This was just as good an issue as the early Buscema ones, both in terms of art and story. Little did I know that Roy Thomas was on his way out... :-(
Fantasy Masterpieces #10. Dare I say it? The Silver Surfer wasn't that interesting a character after all... I wouldn't have admitted it back then, but he was something of a whiner! Nice Buscema art, as ever, and an attempt at writing a somewhat more mature super-hero tale than was the norm, but it was still pretty Manichean and simplistic. Plus, the Surfer's power level is all over the place... He can take on Galactus one day, and the next he has a hard time handling a few thugs with guns.
Incredible Hulk annual #9. I don't think I ever re-read that book since 1980!
King Conan #3. Bulanadi does nothing for Buscema's breakdowns. This story arc should have been massively important (Conan's final showdown with Thoth-Amon, spread over four issues), but the Sprague de Camp plot is unfortunately completely pedestrian. Only Roy's respect for other creators prevented him from just re-writing the whole thing his own way, I'm sure.
Man-Thing #6. When it comes to Man-Thing, Chris Claremont is no Steve Gerber and Don Perlin is no Mike Ploog.
Marvel Spotlight #8, starring Captain Marvel. Terry Austin snuck in Popeye on the Frank Miller cover!
Marvel-two-in-one annual #5. I don't remember much about that one except that the artwork was pretty bad, that it had the Stranger (whom I usually dislike) and that the god Pluto ends up falling into a black hole. Still, it was a comic and it was there on the newsstand, so I bought it!
Master of Kung Fu #92. I was really enjoying the new direction of the mag. By then I had grown used to Mike Zeck's rendition of the characters and no longer pined for a return by Paul Gulacy, and seeing Chi in regular clothes was cool.
Micronauts #21. Loved those Michael Golden covers, and was still happy that Broderick had replaced Chaykin. The mag was not as good as the original 12 issues, however. I was buying it out of fidelity more than out of actual interest.
She-Hulk #8. Amazing cover by Michael Golden, lousy interior art by Mike Vosburg, but at least Richard Rory was in it.
Savage Sword of Conan #55. Lots of nudity. 16 years old me didn't mind at all! The book would get increasingly raunchy for a few months still, then become resolutely PG-13.
Spider-Woman #30. I assume The Fly is in it, given the cover... but I have no recollection of that issue apart from the fact it's in a longbox somewhere.
Warlord #37. I'm a fan of the Grell years on Warlord. The relationship between Morgan and Tara was great, and while plots were usually resolved quickly, the overall development of the characters was very nice indeed.
X-Men #137. Wait, what? That's the month X-Men #137 came out? A major milestone, of course, and I recall buying an extra issue that I gave to another X-Men fan who didn't have a subscription. The capstone of the Phoenix saga was something of a revolution, and it would influence super-hero comics for decades to come (for better and worse). For the record, I'm fine with the decision of killing Jean. It broke my fannish heart, but dramatically it was far more powerful than just depowering her. (I still recommend the alternate storyline that John Byrne is currently publishing on his website, though).

On sale and purchased in July, 1980
Amazing Spider-Man #209... No idea what happened in that one. Apparently a forgetful issue, although I think it has Alan Lee Weiss artwork. I knew Weiss from his Weird Worlds days and liked him a lot
Avengers #200... Nowadays an infamous issue; at the time, I just thought it was a pity Ms. Marvel would leave the team. Conan #115... The last regular Roy Thomas issue for something like a decade, alas. Roy went out with an ambitious story, putting the ghost of Bêlit to rest in Conan's heart, having the Cimmerian finally defeat Red Sonja but then not forcing himself on her, and setting up what should have been the next important story arc ("Hawks over Shem") just to gave it trashed and forgotten by the next writer. The Bad Old Years of Conan were starting.
Howard the duck #7... I liked the Howard magazine, but I can't say I remember much about this issue. I remember that a girl I fancied saw it in my hand and had a sort of "tut-tut" disapproval look. "You read that kind of thing"?
Iron Man #139... Those were good years for Shellhead, but as I recall this issue had something of a falling out between Madame Masque and Tony, which I thought was a pity. I could see why Tony would go for Bethany Cabe instead of his old paramour, but Marvel didn't have to make her all petty about it.
Master of Kung Fu #93... The revival of the title continued!
Micronauts #22... Lovely Michael Golden cover, as the Micronauts play Land of Giants once again. Is it in this issue that they trash a McDonald's?
Micronauts annual #2... Ugh... Some of Steve Ditko's worst work ever, and a ridiculous plot in which Dr Prometheus, once a pretty impressive villain, becomes something like the Toymaster or somesuch, building toy-sized robots. The Micronauts also drive Hot Wheels toys as if they were real cars. I hated the whole thing.
Rom #11... Another brilliant Michael Golden cover. I forgot about the book's contents.
She-Hulk #9... Ditto.
Savage sword of Conan #56... I was getting a little tired of the Buscema-DeZuniga duo, to be honest. Also, too much nudity and bondage.
X-Men #138... The mandatory "a major character is dead so we'll take a pause and reminisce about the past with plenty of vignettes" issue. I learned a lot about the X-Men's history in that issue, and seeing her tombstone convinced me that it was not an imaginary story: Jean was really dead.
But why is the cover... SO... PINK?

Bought back in the day:
Amazing Adventures #11 Amazing Adventures was my first experience with the original X-Men. Avengers #200 Cool cover, and beautiful art by George Perez, but the story is, shall we say, regrettable. I don't remember my impressions as an eleven year old reading this for the first time, but I was probably confused. However, George Perez art does cover a lot of sins...but not all of them. Fantastic Four #223 A pretty forgettable story, but it kept my streak of Fantastic Fours alive. Fantastic Four Annual #15 I thought this was a pretty good one. Justice League of America #183 Awesome JLA/JSA team-up with the New Gods! Legion of Super-Heroes #268 I really enjoyed this issue (as I did pretty much all Legion comics of this era) but to go from a George Perez cover to Steve Ditko interiors?! Yeesh! Quite a shock. Marvel Two-in-One #68 I was going to buy anything with an X-Men or ex-X-Man on the cover at this point, plus I love me some team-up books! Micronauts #22 I loved this title back in the day, and even had fun re-reading them a few years ago. Micronauts Annual #2 I also had a bunch of the action figures. Rom #11 I was collecting Rom pretty regularly by now. X-Men #138 The issue after one of the most important comics in my life was a worthy follow-up.
Bought much more recently:
Marvel Team-Up #98 I love team-up books! Incredible Hulk #252 The Hulk fighting monsters! Machine Man #17 I really like this character. Wish I had the whole run. Tales to Astonish #11 I bought a bunch of these Sub-Mariner reprints in a dollar bin several years ago and they were quite good. Roy Thomas, I think.
