Surprised to see Spin & Marty. It had been 20 years since they stopped making those serials on the Mickey Mouse Club. Not sure of the thinking there. The old Mickey Mouse Club shows were being re-run in syndication -- I remember seeing them as a kid in the '70s, including the Spin & Marty serials. I guess they figured it was worth publishing a one-shot to see if there was any demand.

One more month until I started buying my own comics. I'm amazed at how some of you can remember details like this. I can remember vaguely that titles like Plop and House of Mystery were my first purchases, and when seeing certain covers can say with some certainty that I bought them off the newstands. But specifics like you all sometimes have? Not even close. And it's quite possible that I was being given comics for a couple years prior to the Plop era but I just don't have any memory of them. I think I remember covers because I tend to be a visual learner, but also because reading in general, and comics, many library books, and sports magazines were such highlights in my young reading life. The made vivid impact on my imagination, I guess. Sometimes I don't have a clear memory of purchasing or owning a particular issue back in the Pleistocene Era, but that's often because I wound up buying many old comics over the years. I can remember the act of buying certain comics: the newsstand or candy store, even the clerk I bought them from. (For example, Tomahawk 115; SHIELD 3; GL/GA 76; Detective 320; Star Spangled War Stories 146, among many others.) Weird, even twisted, I know, but if it's any consolation, I don't have a concealed carry permit.

Comics currently in my collection from August 1975:
Amazing Spider-Man #150 (I bought this at a church flea market about a decade ago for $.50, when it had a book value of $20 at the time. The woman selling it was widowed and was cleaning out some of her husband's things, and she had a pile of comics. Most of them were Batman, but I found this. I offered her more for it, but she said she just wanted it to go to someone who would appreciate it, so she was fine with just getting her asking price)
Avengers #141 Captain America #191 Conan the Barbarian #56 Daredevil #127 (more Torpedo, sadly...damn me and my compulsive need to collect full runs, or else this would never have been purchased) Defenders #29 Fantastic Four #164 Incredible Hulk #193 (Doc Samson appearance- I always liked him) Invaders #3 Iron Fist #1 (own it in Marvel Masterworks - it's the only issue of this series I don't own in floppy format) Iron Man #80 Jungle Action #18 Ka-Zar #12 Marvel Two-In-One #12 Master of Kung Fu #34 Thor #241 Tomb of Dracula #38 Werewolf by Night #35

I own more now, but at the time I probably only bought a few of the DC horror and superhero books. Most likely JLA and Swamp Thing for sure.

Forty years ago this month I started buying comics. Well...probably. It's within the realm of possibility that I started in October. But the first comic I ever purchased was Detective Comics #454 which went on sale some time in September of 1975. I also bought Amazing Spider-Man #151 off the spinner rack. But it was some time after I bought the issue of Detective. Probably the next week.
Both were purchased from Harry's Heyburn Food Center, a small grocery store that no longer exists, though the building is still there. I walked to the store while my Mom was working part-time as a switch-board operator. I suspect the money came from me doing odd jobs for the old lady who owned the switch-board. The issue of Detective was purchased because Batman was on the cover. The Spidey...I'm not so sure why...but it's a good cover.

Comics currently in my collection from September 1975 Amazing Spider-Man #151 Avengers #142 Captain America #192 (featuring one of my favorite mid-level villains ever: Dr. Faustus) Champions #2 Conan the Barbarian #57 Daredevil #128 (after the Torpedo issues, the appearance of Death-Stalker is a welcome improvement) Defenders #30 Doctor Strange #11 Fantastic Four #165 Fear #31 (recently read this, and it was bad) Ghost Rider #15 (another of my favorite mid-level villains is in this one: The Orb) Incredible Hulk #194 (the second appearance of The Locust, who first showed up in X-Men in the '60s) Inhumans #2 Iron Fist #2 Iron Man #81 Ka-Zar #13 Marvel Chillers #2 (second appearance of Modred the Mystic; I always wished he'd been built as a bigger threat to Doctor Strange, because his ties to Chthon and the Darkhold fascinated me) Marvel Premiere #27 Marvel Presents #2 Master of Kung Fu #35 Power Man #28 Son of Satan #1 Super-Villain Team-Up #3 Thor #242 Tomb of Dracula #39 X-Men #96

I was only 6 years old at this point. As far as I can tell, the only comic I actually bought at the newsstand this month was Road Runner #55 (Whitman) which doesn't show up in Mike's Amazing World. As far as comics from that date which I currently have:
1st Issue Special (Dr. Fate) #9 Avengers #142 Captain America #192 Fantastic Four #165 Giant-Size Avengers #5 (I think this might have been the firs back issue I ever bought at my LCS!) Iron Man #81 Justice League of America #125 Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #213 X-Men #96
