Based on something Reptisaurus mentioned in another thread, I started thinking about who my choices would be for "most important creators to me" i.e. my personal Pantheon. You can intepret this any way you want: your favorite, the creators whose work you seek out above all others, the creators who most shaped the way you view comics, the creators whose work you enjoy the most whatever (or any combination of the above or some criteria you choose).
Repti went with a top 5, but I chose Pantheon for it's mystical connotations and will use a number with mystical cache too, and am going with 7
My seven in no particiular order...
1. Will Eisner 2. Joe Kubert 3. Jack Kirby 4. Jean Giraud (a.k.a Moebius) 5. Jeff Smith 6. Mike Mignola 7. Bernie Wrightson
and the following are a handful of creators with demi-god status, i.e. those receiving some consideration, but not making the list...
Darwyn Cooke Jim Starlin Phillipe Druillet Milton Caniff Alex Raymond Charles Schultz Berkeley Breathed Colleen Doran Linda Medley Steve Ditko Gil Kane Jim Steranko Richard Corben Warren Ellis Ed Brubaker Terry Moore George Perez Scott McCloud Howard Chaykin Walt Simonson Michael Kaluta
There are obviously other creators whose work I enjoy, but those 7 hold a special place for me. Those on the demi-god list, either once held a place in the list of the seven before being supplanted as I experienced new things or had my tastes change, or did something significant to change those perceptions and tastes in comics but not quite on the same level as those who made the list. There's a host of others I enjoy as well (The Buscemas,Colans, Morrows, Brunners, etc. of the comic world) but whose work didn't have the impact of shaping my comics world the way those listed did. The hardest choice was between Cooke and Wrightson for the last of the 7, I ended up going with Wrightson because he has been a part of my comic life longer.
I am curious to see what some of the folks here choose.

My 7:
1. Nick Cardy 2. George Perez 3. George Tuska 4. Don Heck 5. Marshall Rogers 6. Dick Dillin 7. Ramona Fradon
My earliest comic memories showcase these artists. When I see their art, it makes me happy and brings back so many great memories.

My Seven Creators
Top Seven
Bernie Wrightson Darwyn Cooke George Perez Jack Kirby Jim Steranko Ramona Fradon Will Eisner
Honorable Mention
Alex Raymond Carmine Infantino Charles Schultz John Bryne Mike Sekowsky Stan Lee Steve Ditko Walt Simonson
I made a change to include Will Eisner because of his work in the Golden Age of Comics and move Mike Sekowsky to the Honorable Mention and dropped Terry Moore because I did not see much of his comics that much and I've had to drop him from that list. I have my reasons for doing this and this is the best that I can do.
Later, I added Carmine Infantino work on the Flash - and I've wanted to thank batusi for mentioning him.

I love that you put Kim Deitch in your top 7. He should get much more respect. Highly under-rated IMO. He's about the only person that I buy his new stuff as soon as it comes out (in book form, anyway)

No particular order other than I most certainly bought/buy anything by them. 1. Kubert 2. Kirby 3. Ditko 4. Perez 5. Buscema: Sal and John 6. Heck 7. Infantino 8. Englehart 9. Starlin 10. Kane 11. Dillin 12. Simonson My ranking goes to 12, just cuz 7 isn't enough (thank you Spinal Tap) and 12 is the standard for most mythical pantheon's Any list is of course inaccurate and incomplete and changes every day. The demi-god status list could go on endlessly for me as there are just so many writers and artists which I enjoy and that goes far beyond just comics into other venues...

The one artist who is part of my artistic Pantheon that I did not include because it is more his work outside of comics than his comics work (which is also spectacular) is Frazetta. I discovered his work through covers on paperbacks (Conan in particular) and album covers, and later learned of his comics work, so he didn't fit the criteria of my comics pantheon because he didn't shape my views of comics, but he did for fantasy art, and illustration/painting, and he's someone whose work I will always seek out, so he has a place in my personal pantheon, just not among the comics pantheon.
