Why'd they have to go and make Superman fly? Leaping 1/8 of a mile isn't good enough for these whipper-snappers nowdays. I un-ironically and completely agree with this. Can you read my miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind? Do you know what it is that you doooooooooo to me? I don't know who you arrrrrrrrrrrrrre. Just a friend from another staaaaaaaaaaaar. (I think I'm gonna be sick!)

Superman had to be able to fly because Captain Marvel could fly, and they couldn't let the competition have more dramatic action visuals in their comics.
It's ironic that DC eventually won the lawsuit claiming that Cap imitated Superman. Superman changed a lot in response to Captain Marvel.

It's ironic that DC eventually won the lawsuit claiming that Cap imitated Superman. Superman changed a lot in response to Captain Marvel. That lawsuit always baffled me, can't believe how DC screwed over Fawcett! The characters are not that similar except for the super strength and both having a cape. That type of lawsuit would be laughed out of court today. I didn't realize that Captain Marvel flew before Superman, interesting fact.

Correction: Superman was flying on the radio series before Captain Marvel debuted, nor could Cap fly in the first few Whiz stories.
Cei-U! I summon the old "Up, up and away!"

Wow, that completely changes the narrative that I thought was going on! So the radio guys powered-up Superman. Was Jerry Siegel involved in writing the radio show?

Wow, that completely changes the narrative that I thought was going on! So the radio guys powered-up Superman. Was Jerry Siegel involved in writing the radio show? As far as I know, it was the radio show's producer Bob Maxwell who made the decision to have Big Blue fly because he felt it was more dramatic and moved the story along faster. I've listened to the first few episodes and, sho nuff, Superman flies fro the very start. It was the success of the animated cartoons, though, that finally convinced Siegel (or, more likely, Mort Weisinger) to make the switch. Cei-U! I summon those thrilling days of yesteryear!

Still, I figure the tonal switch from the relatively serious first Superman stories to the more comedy-centric mid '40s Superman - with Suzie Thomkins and the Prankster - was due to Captain Marvel's popularity.

Am I the only one who finds it sad that this thread is so much longer than the "Things I Love About Comics" thread? I know this one started sooner, but still...
Cei-U! I summon a lusty chorus of "Accentuate the Positive!"

I summon a lusty chorus of "Accentuate the Positive!" Total agreement with you. This only reinforces the negative attributes most outsiders have about comic book collectors/collecting. Where is all the love?

One the other hand, The "love" posts are pretty general and all encompassing, while this one seems to be nit-picky and (dare I say) "fannish."
