I have always enjoyed editor's notes. It made the whole comic reading experience a little more personal to me. I felt like the editor cared enough to give me as much information as possible.
I always got a little geeky-fan-boy thrill when the editor's note referred to a comic that I already owned. I would immediately think, "HEY! I have that one!"

I liked editor's notes. I liked captions. I liked thought balloons. I liked letter pages. I missed them all when they disappeared.

That WAS one of the things I loved about Marvel's editor notes. The casual tone made it seem like they were talking directly to ME!

To me, they are educational without them - I would get confused and disoriented because I did not know what the story means to the author who wrote it. To me, the notes of the Editor is like an extension of the writer and most of the time it's enhance the story line and that's makes it even better. I missed those and during the early days of the Silver Age they were hits in my times and I sorely wants them back.
Adds a lot to the Comic Book and making it more valuable as time goes on.
Man, I surely can use those now - they are also quite entertaining too!

One of the earliest Marvel comics I bought was an early issue of The Defenders (#4, I think). This footnote referred readers to "Jade-Jaws #142". Being a newbie dumb kid, I wasn't entirely sure whether or not that was a nickname for the Hulk, but just to be certain, I remember carefully scanning all the Bullpen Bulletins in this and the few other Marvels I had, looking for any evidence of this possible series. I think those editors making these notes should have adhered to some formal standards instead of confusing us new readers!
