So, we are finally moved over to our new apartment, 60 miles away, in a new city (where I have been commuting for the last year, waiting for the lease to expire). First there was the fun of trying to clear out 10 years of accumulated junk from a townhouse that had more than enough room that we didn't bother before. Then, there is the hell of not being able to reserve the right size truck to haul everything in one go. That added up to two round trips (I had to return to where I picked it up, as they were booked solid) and a heck of a mileage charge. Then, there was the fun of loading the thing, with one able-bodied person (a co-worker of my brother's) and me (semi-able-bodied). Then, while transporting two cats, in a pet taxi, from the old place to the cab of the truck, the bottom dropped out, dumping said cats on the ground, effecting their escape. The older one was cornered under a bush and recovered. The younger one panicked and bolted when the brother's co-worker tried to corral him and the little nitwit took off like a rocket, across an inner courtyard and playground, last seen diving into a bush. 3 days of searching have yielded no sign of said cat. Way too many places to hide, including crawl spaces under buildings (it's a whole complex of townhouses, at least 40 years old) as I saw at least one open entrance to one (and calling and shaking food yielded no animal there). Local animal control facility and humane society have been alerted and the animal is micro-chipped; so, we still hold out hope that he will be discovered and taken in. Otherwise....well, he was an indoor cat, barely a year old, who spent most of that first year in animal shelters. He's not well trained and equipped to be running around outdoors, especially in an area that sees wildlife come around (raccoons, opossums, foxes).
Moral of the story: never buy a pet taxi from Walmart, especially if it only clamps together, rather than bolting together. The clamps snapped open faster than Madonna's jeans at a men's locker room.
