I was today years old when I learned that polar bears have black skin under that fur.
It's also believed that it is an important trait, somehow, because no albino polar bear was ever found.

I forget when I learned that as well, but I was also surprised when I learned their fur isn't white either but rather mostly clear. The interaction with light just gives it the white look. So a black skinned animal with clear fur somehow looks white!

It makes a lot of sense, when we think about it... the translucent hair allows the photons to reach the black skin, where they are absorbed and can help the bear get an extra bit of heat. I'm sure that living way up there, every little bit helps!

I know there are a few other Apollo era space exploration fans in the forum like me. Here's a neat, though fairly lightweight article on the BBC News website about the remaining eight astronauts who voyaged beyond the Earth's orbit... www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-67410372

A bit of lyric from a song I rediscovered recently:
Though the flights to the moon have been in some decline I remember the Eagle back in '69 That they walked on the moon is not as wild somehow As the fact that there are footprints on the moon right now

Not familiar with that song, Rob. Who's it by?
I am, however, familiar with The Byrds' song "Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins", written by Zeke Manners and Scott Seely...
"Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were launched away in space Millions of hearts were lifted, proud of the human race Space control at Houston Radio command The team below that gave the go, they had God's helping hand."

Not familiar with that song, Rob. Who's it by? That's "Goodnight Everybody" by Lou & Peter Berryman, a prolific songwriting and performing duo from Madison, Wisconsin. She writes the melodies and plays accordion; he writes the lyrics and plays 12-string guitar; they both sing. The song was originally on their 1998 album Some Kinda Funny and also on the 2004 collection Love is the Weirdest of All. All of their lyrics are available free on their website, louandpeter.com. I highly recommend them! It took some doing but I found the song online: sonichits.com/video/Lou_%26_Peter_Berryman/Goodnight_Everybody?track=1

If there's a situation that says "LOVECRAFT" like few others, it's this one! Many internet images of members of the Fugate family seem to have been enhanced to look bluer than they should, but many "normal-looking" pics really show a distinct purple-bluish hue. That's as fascinating as it is cool!!!

Marshmallow candy certainly goes with Easter, so in the spirit of this Sunday, a favorite experiment I remember from my younger school days. It was so cool seeing for the first time in person!

THAT WAS AWESOME!!!Not one cloud on the sky, and a clear view of the eclipsed sun from behind our house. About a kilometre as the crow flies there's a small church on top of a mountain and many, many people congregated there to watch the eclipse... and my wife and I heard their collective "wowwwwwwwwwwwwww" when totality began.
It's good to feel awed by nature all together like that!

Jealous! Eclipses are a wonder of nature. (Also, better sacrifice some chickens just to be on the safe side)

I'm a Christian, which sadly makes some people think I must not like or even hate science. But in truth, the reverse is actually true. I'm a huge proponent of various studies, and I encourage people to learn as much as they can. But I don't hold to the philosophy of "scientism", which says the only way to knowledge is by examining stuff in a lab. That doesn't make any sense to me, in the slightest.
