Our hometown comic con C4 is returning at the end of the month here in lovely Springfield, OH. It's a small comic focused show with a good variety of dealers and several local creators. I'll be attending and kibitzing with lots of folks if anyone is in the area and wants to check it out. For more info check out Facebook or the C4 Info pageThere's a small number of panels including the charity auction to benefit the Heroes Initiative. -M

The 2017 Champion City Comic Con is in the books. Amy and I had a great day at the show. Amy participated in a drawing chibis panel, met some folks who are interested in hiring her to color some stuff they have in works and got a handful of prints and pops. I met and hung out with my friends and acquaintences in the local comics community, amassed a massive haul, and we attended the charity auction at the end of the day and the post-con pizza party/roast of one of the local creators sponsored by the con organizer (Jesse the dude who has been taking most of the stuff I have purged the last few months). Plus we got the announcement of the first round of guests for the 2018 Gem City Con over in Dayton (Jesse's first and main show). lots of interesting folks, but Mike Grell and Kevin Nowlan caught my attention in particular. Need to start building my war chest for that show, which is March 24th & 25th 2018. Going to start with the charity auction haul even though it was last... Amy picked up a pair of Funko Pops, including the exclusive glow in the dark Spirit Yoda pop and Quicksliver (it was a lot of 2 pops, and she really wanted the Yoda pop, so Quicksliver was essentially an add-on I picked up a classic The Mummy movie poster for a whopping $2... a Kirby-esque Dr. Doom print by local artist Michael Neno for $5... and a quartet of art cards by local horror artist Aaron Lindeman for $5 both Aaron and Michael were at the show, so I stopped by and got them signed/personalized after the auction. We had donated 4 items to the charity auction, a set of Marvel Tarot (it only included the 22 major arcana not the 4 suits of regular cards most decks have), a deck of tarot illustrated by Milo Manara, a set of 6 large prints of Amy's art she signed for the winner, and a set of 6 smaller prints of her art also signed for the winner, all of which helped raise money for the Hero Initiative. Both Amy and I got a lot of art, mostly prints. From local artist Nate Lovett, Amy got 5 prints... Nate's con bio for those not familiar with his stuff Dragon print #1 Dragon print #2 a Harry Potter print... A Star Wars print featuring Rey... and a Star Wars print featuring Vader... and from artist Imelda Roque... con bio (She's also done some work with Stan Lee since the bio was written) Amy got a Wonder Woman print... and they talked coloring and compared notes on some techniques they both like to use and shared other techniques the other hadn't tried. I mentioned the drawing chibis panel Amy attended, it was run by Todd Besitel... con bio who I ended up getting three prints from: A Hellboy print... a kraken print (very Jules Verne-esque) and a pulp cover style print... That's it for prints, but wait, there's more to come in the next post... -M

Onto original art, I picked up/commisioned 2 original sketch covers and commissioned 4 pieces of Conan art/sketches for the Conan shelf I am working on in the revamped Conan room (all 4 are done on magazine size backing boards as the paper stock to give them a sturdiness and consistent size for the display). Sketch cover #1 was by my former studio mate Kevin Adkins, who has also done art for the rpg industry... a Shadow cover... and from Jay Fife con bio I picked up this Micronauts sketch cover he had done featuring Acroyear... I also got a Conan sketch from Jay... Nate Lovett was doing $10 head sketches, so I got a Conan head sketch from him as well... the third Conan piece was from Brian Lattimer, of whom I have some other pieces including a Wonder Woman sketch cover I commissioned form him a few years ago and a Wonder Woman vs. Red Sonja pin up page of original art I got in a previous year's Champion City charity auction. from Brian's con bio... Brian's Conan... and the last Conan commission was from Sean Forney, who was so excited to get to draw Conan he did a full body piece even though I only commissioned a bust sketch... Sean's con bio and his Conan... So, I had space for 6-8 pieces in the Conan display I am putting together up in the comic room, an dI got 4 of those pieces today. We'll see if I can add to this in December when I do my next show. That's it for original art, but I did get one more piece of art, not quite a print, but something of that ilk... a Usagi Yojimbo light switch cover to go into the studio/comic room after I finish repainting it... from Roma Collectibles (they run the Ohio Toy & Comic show over in Fairborn each July as well as being one of the larger dealers of vintage GI Joe stuff in Ohio, and his wife runs Mary Mercenary cosplay-she is the craftsmen who creates these light switch covers). I spoke ot her about making me a glow in the dark Spectre light switch cover for the other light switch upstairs, and I should be getting that in December (if she can make the glow in the dark work, if not we have a 2nd option). that's it for art, next will be comics and trades, so more to come. -M

I actually did get some comics. I'll do the classic stuff first, then the small press stuff from local creators, then the trades and OGNs. I didn't get a lot of back issues. In the wake of the purge, I am getting far more selective what I get as back issues, but I did get some... From Star * Reach, I picked up Chaykin's Cody Starbuck and P. Craig Russell's Parsifal for $3 each... and Star *Reach (the anthology series) #11-14 also for $3 each a trio of Tarzan issues including the last issue I needed of the Marvel run to complete it (all for 50% off sticker price) an unauthorized fanzine called Ultimate put together by John Lister in 1980 featuring the work of Wrightson, Vaughn Bode, Jeff Jones, Brunner, and others for $10... and a half dozen issues of Kamandi... next onto small press stuff... Edit to add: Forgot one... a 3-D comic featuring Kirby art form circa 1982 (also $3)... -M

Ok small press stuff... from a writer I have known for about 5 years now, Dustin Carson, I picked up the trade collection of No Gods (collecting #1-6) and the second issue of Half Breed (I picked up #1 a couple years back but hadn't seen Dustin since #2 came out)... I also found out he's forgoing floppies on his other series The Occultists (he put out #1 at the same time as Half Breed #1) and going straight to trade, doing what would have been 2-6 as an OGN packaged with #1 in the trade format). Look forward to it, but I don't expect to see it for a little while as the artist needs time to get 5 issues of material done. From the aforementioned Jay Fife, I picked up Mary Monster #3 to see what's it's about... plus got a neat little head sketch on the cover. From the aforementioned Brian Lattimer, I picked up the first 2 issues of his new series Remedy (#2 features a cameo by another former studio mate of mine), and the first issue of Evillive. From a little studio outfit called Blood Scream Comics, I picked up a trio of zero issues they had done... and they are taking votes as to which one should move to series up through Gem City in the spring. They were $2 each or all three for $5, so I decided to give them a try. Each book had a different writer/artist combo, the folks at the show were the ones who did Scar, which looked the most interesting of the three to me. I picked up a copy of Adam Fields' Prowl #3 (Adam couldn't make the show-he was at a show in Kentucky and working on those Marvel sketch cards for Upper Deck) but he gave Jesse copies to sell at the show) and lastly for small press stuff, was the book Defenders of Mars by Verl-he had done a signing at Bell, Book & Comics last month but I couldn't make it that day as I worked, but Pete Bell-the owner of the shop-had Verl come to Champion City witht he book at his tables. The book looked like it had a very Jack Katz First Kingdom vibe and I was intrigued when I saw Pete advertise the signing, so I picked up a copy today, plus an oversized art fanzine Verl had done called Barbarian & Battlemaiden... Verl and his wife were the sweetest people. They were in the corner next to Twilight Star so I talked to them several times over the course of the show and they were oohing and ahhing at each Conan commission I got done, and when I mentioned the Katz-vibe I saw in his stuff, he was delighted, and we ended up talking about First Kingdom for almost a half hour. They were an older couple-he retired from his career and is only now pursuing his dream to do comics and fantasy art as senior citizen. I look forward to actually diving into Defenders of Mars, which he plans as a 10 issue series. Next, onto the trades, OGN's and my grail. -M

One of my favorite things about shows around here are multiple dealers with boxes of $5 trades. I binged on some stuff from those boxes today. First 3 $5 hardcovers... Adventures of Tintin Vol. 2 (containing 3 Tintin albums), Mind MGMT Vol. 4 by Matt Kindt (I have the first 3 and adore the series), and Batman Ego and other Tales by Darwyn Cooke. Volume 3 and 4 of Hellblazer, $5 each... a quartet of Image trades for $5 each... Saga Vol. 7, getting me up to date, Paper Girls Vol. 1 (which I had read form the library and liked a to and wanted to add to my library), Southern Cross Vol. 1 (same deal, but read on Hoopla and wanted to add it to my shelves) and Bitch Planet Vol. 1 which I have been wanting to give a try to. a trio of miscellaneous trades for $5 each... Paul Pope's 100%, Gotham by Midnight Vol. 1 featuring art by Ben Templesmith, and Hellboy and the BPRD 1952 a pair of $5 trades by Mike Oeming to replace copies I had lent out to people we played D&D with a while back and never got back (at that price replacing them isn't so annoying)... I did get one $10 hardcover... Kirby's In the Days of the Mob (mmm more Kirby goodness). And my big expenditure of the day, was my grail...a signed copy of Benrie Wrightson's Frankenstein... And that's all folks. It was a good show, I'm tired and my wallet's pretty much empty as I spent all of the comic's war chest. but I got lots of stuff I really like and have a lot of interesting reading in front of me. -M

Lots of great stuff mrp. Did you get to meet Mike Grell, if so what is he like? I hate to admit this, but I have never read Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein but it looks amazing.

I hate to admit this, but I have never read Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein but it looks amazing. the guest list is for the upcoming Gem City show in the spring of 2018. Grell and Nowlan will be there. The same organizer runs Champion City as Gem City and he announces the first wave of confirmed guests for Gem City (the bigger and older show) at Champion City as a way to build hype for both shows. So, no I did not get to meet Grell yet, but I am planning on attending Gem City in the spring so I hope to. -M
