FC: Wildcat [of Earth-One/B] and The Creeper
Synopsis
TV reporter Jack Ryder covers a boxing exhibition between Wildcat and heavyweight hopeful Japhy Shim publicizing Shim's upcoming title match with reigning champ Franco Turley. Half the proceeds of that fight, to be held in the tiny South American nation of San Lorenzo, will benefit Vietnamese orphans, a charity dear to Wildcat's heart. A gas grenade expodes in the ring mid-bout and thugs in gas masks attempt to snatch Shim. Ryder transforms into The Creeper. A man in the crowd yells that the true menace is the bizarre hero/villain's arch-enemy, Proteus, masquerading as Wildcat. Creeper, under the influence of the gas's hallucinatory properties, attacks the Feline Fury. By the time he comes out of it, the crooks — led by the real Proteus — have spirited Japhy away. The two heroes agree to meet in San Lorenzo and investigate further.
On a southbound cruise ship next morning, Ted Grant and Jack Ryder watch a news bulletin. General Pedro Lobo, recently defeated in San Lorenzo's presidential election, claims credit for the Shim abduction. Lobo will kill the boxer if he isn't returned to power. But “Lobo” is really Proteus, who has been paid a million Swiss francs to get Shim out of the way. In San Lorenzo, Ryder trails one of the crooks from the day before as The Creeper. Ted meets President Borges and arranges for “my chum Wildcat” to stand in for Shim if the contender isn't found before the fight. Later, while Wildcat stews over “The Creepie” missing their rendezvous, Creeper is forcing the details of Proteus' plan from his gang.
That night, Wildcat reluctantly enters the ring with Turley. Bound by the rules of the ring, the aging pugilist is no match for a younger boxer in his prime, barely holding his own. High above the ring, Creeper stops Proteus from shooting a bound-and-gagged Japhy but can't stop him from shoving the boxer off the catwalk. Wildcat catches Shim, who escapes with minor injuries. With Proteus in custody, it soon comes out that President Borges hired the master of disguise to frame General Lobo and thus consolidate Borges' power.
The Good Guys
Although it is clear in this issue that Wildcat's dual identity is not publicly known (answering the question raised in The Brave and the Bold #110), it is curious that it is as the Feline Fury and not as former heavyweight champion Ted Grant that he participates in the various boxing matches.
And here endeth Part One of The CCF Guide to Earth-Two. I'll be taking a break the next couple of weeks to deal with this year's Classic Comics Christmas event. Watch for a new thread covering Part Two (of three) on New Year's Day!
