Coffee. Black, please. No fru-fru add-ins. Irish Whisky or Bourbon optional. If I want a candy bar, I'll eat one.
The delicacy fancy coffee drinks are light years better than any candy bar, not least of all because they have coffee in them. That said, those are just for fun. My real morning coffee is regular coffee usually with a splash of cream because I think just a small amount enhances the taste. I am fine with black coffee, too. To paraphrase a quote I once heard, hot coffee is for business, and cold coffee is for pleasure.

There's one thing I find utterly crazy in our society : how old pianos are just given away. As another inheritor of a 100 or so year old heirloom piano, it's true. They are just so expensive to fix, move or renovate. Ours is basically decorative antique furniture because we can't afford the restoration. The wood needs significant work, and the insides probably all but need to be replacing. But it's so beautiful we hate to part with it. Paradoxically, I love the smell of coffee!
That's where I started! But yeah, if you hate it, not much you can do. One of the gals that I worked with, here order was a white chocolate frappuccino. Minus the whip cream and extra chocolate drizzle, it looked and smelled good. I just don't know how people can drink stuff like that on an almost daily basis. Sugary stuff for me is a rarity. The only thing besides sugar I will put in coffee is cognac or brandy when the occasion is right. But I am not a huge coffee fan. I look at it as more a tool than anything. But on Christmas morning, as a tradition my father in law and I have a least one cup with brandy or cognac. Yeah, I don't get the super sugary drinks as the replacement for the regular morning coffee. I get the fancy ones pretty much the same times I would get a milkshake but want coffee in it, which is very rarely. Because that is basically what they are: milkshakes with more steps plus coffee. Between one and three 10-ounce cups of coffee a day is enough to keep me on an even keel. If I go over the three-cup mark, it tends to give me an eyelid tic. Can't drink black tea because it tends to give kidney stones. I like it and can drink it like water (hot or iced), but the purine level in black tea is too high for my kidneys. I do what is about 5 on my coffee maker, sometimes I re-up in the afternoon. I used to do less until I had kids... Mrs. MRP was reading a fan fiction tonight and started laughing uncontrollably at a word misuse. One of the characters instead of re-holstering his weapon reupholstered it instead... I wonder if he had a nice plaid check pattern or used faux leather to do it...? -M I'm imaging grandma's floral print Smith and Wesson. To be fair, have any of you guys actually tried a venti double cold foam salted caramel frappe with oat milk? It's a mouthful, but it's freaking delicious. You can doctor it up with various milks, sugars, syrups, etc and it still tastes like overheated industrial sludge, to me. When I started out in the Navy, I tried to drink coffee to help stay awake, for night watches; but, I had to put so much cream and sugar in it to try to kill the taste that my hands would shake. I found that cold water and even a little movement keep me perfectly awake and alert. If you don't drink it by now, there is certainly no need to try and force the issue, but I will say there is a MASSIVE difference between poorly made sludge coffee and actually properly prepared quality coffee. It's like the difference between 3-day old McDonald's patty's reheated too long in the microwave versus a gourmet fresh burger made at a local steakhouse on the spot. I used to not like tea back when all I knew was Lipton's black or "green tea." Then I went to a proper loose leaf tea shop, and my mind was blown at the quality and varieties. Again, not suggesting you try it now, but the stale tar in a navy breakroom that's been sitting on a nuclear-hot heating plate for an hour is basically as bad as it gets. It would be like writing off comic books forever because you happened to pick up a copy of the original 90s Youngblood # 1 on a shelf and thought that was the standard.

I'm OK with brains though... they're pretty good mixed with scrambled eggs... and a cup of black coffee.

To be fair, have any of you guys actually tried a venti double cold foam salted caramel frappe with oat milk? It's a mouthful, but it's freaking delicious. You can doctor it up with various milks, sugars, syrups, etc and it still tastes like overheated industrial sludge, to me. When I started out in the Navy, I tried to drink coffee to help stay awake, for night watches; but, I had to put so much cream and sugar in it to try to kill the taste that my hands would shake. I found that cold water and even a little movement keep me perfectly awake and alert. When I was in the Navy I didn't drink coffee either, though I've grown to like it better since. Obviously nothing wrong with hating coffee, and certainly Navy coffee was the absolute worst. When I first reported to my ship and was junior in the department, they tried to make me brew the coffee. I put a stop to that quickly by making a pot with about a pound of coffee. It reminded me of 10W30 motor oil. Never asked me again. There was also a guy there who refused to ever wash his coffee cup because he said it ruined the taste. It got so disgusting one of the women in the department finally washed it out. I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel.

I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel. There is a certain amount of truth to this. Both stainless steel and earthenware coffee mugs need to be "seasoned" like an iron skillet. Plastic, glass, ceramic and enameled steel mugs, not so much... although ceramic may benefit if the glaze is very thin.
This doesn't mean you don't ever wash it, it simply means that you never use soap or detergents... only water and ice + baking soda or rock salt, followed by a paper towel scrub & dry. The ice is important because it causes the residue bean oils to stiffen up a bit and stay in the surface pores while the rest of the coffee silt is cleaned away.
You want to get the gunk out, but you don't want to strip the coffee bean oils that have soaked into the surface. Same reason you never, ever use heavy dishwashing detergent on a seasoned iron skillet.

Every chief petty officer I knew had a ceramic coffee mug that was stained deep brown and probably had cigarette ash smeared on it too. You could usually spot the chief before seeing his insignia (aside from wearing khakis) by the coffee mug in one hand and a cigarette in either the other or dangling from his mouth. When I worked for a Destroyer Squadron, one of the two chiefs in my office quit smoking and was a bear for about a month, sucking on peppermint discs constantly, until the nicotine cravings subsided. However, you couldn't get his mug away from him. The other chief (a senior chief) dipped and it would be constant sips of coffee and expulsions of spittle into his trash can. We had sailors who had been left behind by ships in the squadron, for various reasons, who would be temporarily attached to us and put to work, doing cleaning chores, shredding documents, running errands, etc. They refused to clean the senior chief's trash can and we made him take care of it himself.
For the civilians, these weren't coffee cups; these were about 12 ounce mugs, with the ship's emblem on them and often the chief's name. I still have my mug, from the Squadron, in a box somewhere, though it has never had a drop of coffee in it. It said "Staff Artist," as I used to doodle on my desk calendar, while on the phone to different supply centers, chasing down repair parts for our ships and getting updates on repair jobs for a report I compiled every day. The commodore saw it and the next thing I knew, I was shanghaied into making cartoon posters for parties and Happy Hours, at the O Club and redesigning the Squadron sign, down at the main pier.

No other ill effects so far. -M I got my new COVID booster and flu shot the same day two weeks ago, one in each arm. Other than a sore arm, I was fine. My wife got just the COVID booster and was KOed for two days. It's funny how differently it affects different people.

Flu shots later in the month. I was in the vaccination center's neighbourhood this morning and thought "what the hey". There were only four people in line, so I got the new omicron shot. I'm thankfully very healthy so it won't make any difference to me personally, but if I can be that less likely to silently carry the virus to a vulnerable person, then it's all for the best.
