The last ten days I've been alone as my wife had to leave for a month to tend to her mother in Macau. Since the middle of August I've been going to the gym every single day after doing it off and on for too long and not getting anywhere. I've also paid more attention to my nutrition. I'm around 215 and trying to get to around 200, maybe even 190 by November when I leave for Japan for a couple of weeks with my wife. The last ten days have been a struggle since she has been gone though as I've reverted back to my old eating habits: no structure and lots of junk food. I had to stop tonight and really ask myself what I was doing and was it worth all the progress I had made. Especially since my gym attendance has gone back to being sporadic in the last few days. Strange how quick one could go back in the opposite direction. If there was one wish I had it would be to not be lazy/have greatest work ethic in the world. I may have said this before, but there are days I might take my chances being an alcoholic or have a gambling problem instead of just being a super lazy individual. It's plagued my life for years. Right there with you about the diet and working out. I'd topped out around 238 in early June, and I'm only 6' tall, so that's a little on the large side. My company will pay for a gym membership, so I finally decided to take advantage of it, and I started to eat better, with fewer snacks, less junk, more veggies, and smaller portions. I'm down to about 224, but it's hard to keep the momentum. At 41 years old, my body doesn't recover like it used to, so this morning, for example, the mind was more than willing, but my back was killing me, so I didn't push myself to go workout; I'd done it the past two days and plan to again tomorrow, but I just couldn't push through the pain. The other problem I have is that with my work schedule and kids' activity schedules, I have to get up at 4:15 AM to be at the gym by 5:00, put in 60 minutes (half cardio on the elliptical due to my bad knees and ankles, half weights), then grab a shower and shave so I can be at my desk by 6:30; there are just some mornings, particularly when I couldn't get to bed early or had trouble sleeping, where all I want to do is skip it and get an extra hour of sleep. Stick with it. You'll feel better, look better, and possibly prolong your life. If my lazy a$$ can do it, I'm sure you can as well. I'd kill Cei-U! to be 238 again. I weighed about 224 when I moved here in 11/01, which I thought was ridiculous, but I've put on about 100 lbs. since then, to the point that I weigh just about double what I did in grad school. Part of the problem is that there's literally nothing to do in Montgomery except eat out (evidence: a Facebook group devoted to doing just that here now has some 3,500 members; that's one of roughly every 60 residents), & there's also the fact that it's hard to exercise when there's every chance my Crohn's disease is going to betray me. Being a damned lazy piece of crap doesn't help a whole lot, either.

My diet kills whatever momentum I get from my (infrequent) exercising. I'm basically newly single and this summer I was really going to kick it into gear to meet new people etc. Yeah, right! When I get the kids from school, they constantly want to go out to eat, and it saps my willpower sometimes. It would be better for my wallet AND my waistline to cut it way back. Then I start to thinking about breakfast tacos... If you are still in Austin then the breakfast tacos beckon at almost every corner.

In my avatar photo I'm about 180. In my Keith Richards/Iggy Pop days in the early-mid 2000s I was down to about 175. When you're 6'2, almost 6'3, this gives off a rather emaciated air I can tell you.
I stayed about 195 for about 5 years but yeah... it seems every year I add about 5 lbs despite the fact that I do keep up some small exercise regimen. But I think I need to find the time to more than 30 minutes of cardio 4 times a week. I can do better and since I'm about 215 now I have to.
My primary concern is cholesterol as it was around 203 at my physical last year. An eye opener. I cut out the morning muffin immediately.

Two biscuits... with butter and strawberry jam. Scrambled eggs and chicken fried steak.

Houston is no better. I know people who eat BBQ like there is no such thing as a colon, cholesterol, or an aorta.

You have a lot on your plate, adam. Do what you can. But, you know, I wouldn't have it any other way. I think I have issues, I can't imagine what it is like for my wife sometimes inside her head. If I can be there for her as best I can I die happy in the end.

I'm not really a fan of gyms. I see the men flexing in the mirror sometimes, ogling their bodies and all the while you can see they are checking out the competition, seeing who is bigger than they are? And they will sometimes get quite envious, because even with all the protein shakes, all the dieting and exercise, they wonder why their arms and legs and chest aren't as big?

Well I am not a BBQ fan at all. I like meat smoked or charcoaled, but BBQ sauce, no. Meat is better with its natural flavor. If I get brisket and cook and baste it, the family likes Head Country, and I like to top some of that on a baked potato (along with the mound of other things I put on it).

I prefer my rib eye without seasoning, but I can't eat pork that isn't smothered in BBQ sauce.
