Food tastes 100% better when it’s cooked at home. But it’s still 50% better when I don’t cook it.

How much were they 20 years ago? I honestly don't know, because I mostly avoid McDonald's like the plague. But I find that an awful lot of laments for "things were cheaper then" are 100% explained by inflation. This is certainly not a comprehensive or controlled study, but anecdotally, a McDouble was a dollar. Now it's almost $4. Inflation is absolutely in play, but not 4x in 20 years. Not that I eat McDonald's terribly often, but when I do, I am struck at how comparatively expensive it has gotten. Either the Boston area is a relatively cheap area or you live in a place that's really high priced because a Mcdouble is 2.99 here and again on the app you can regularly get it for a dollar or even free with purchase of fries. The whole, "Fast food places are pricing themselves out of business" story that gets a lot of play(especially on conservative news sources) is definitely a myth. Prices do vary regionally I realize, so it might be different in say New York City or LA but most other places don't seem to be seeing that kind of price increase.

I'd chalk it up to the fact that at one time fast food as a whole's selling point was it was cheap. That may not be the selling point for every fast food place these days. I don't eat fast food often but when I do 99% of the time it is Taco Bell where I can still eat cheap. For reference (since I am a life long TB junkie) in the mid 90's tacos were .49 and soft tacos were .59. Presently they are 1.19 and 1.39 respectively. While just this week I ate two tacos and a burrito from the value menu for $5. The last time I got a 1/4 pounder value meal a month or so ago it was almost $10. And the other place I occasionally visit, Jack In The Box, I can get two tacos for 1.29. I either get two or three orders of them and am easily full. That's just my two cents. Well. there's always the possibility that Taco Bell doesn't have to deal with rising meat prices since what they serve is hard pressed to be called meat, so they are able to keep their prices lower... -M Fair enough. I don’t know what it is but it keeps me coming back. I totally share this opinion when it comes to Taco Bell. Warning adult language.

I was saying that mostly tongue in cheek leaning on a lot of the humorous tropes about TB. I don't go often anymore, but I used to get it on my way to a D&D game several years back, as it was my go to cheap & plentiful fast food to scarf down while rolling dice. -M

Taco Bell might as well be called "Big Bag o' Diarrhea" as far as I'm concerned. Yechh.
Cei-U! I'd rather eat road kill!

I agree on regional pricing likely being a thing, but 3x in 20 years is well beyond inflation in any case.

Hey, come on, now. There's no call blaming Montezuma - or Mexico in general - for Taco Bell. It's as American as baconnaise.

It really isn't, especially as it appears a mcdouble was a 1.49 in 2001 according to the way back machine...which is the equivalent of 2.56 now so 2.99 is only slightly over inflation. I know the story is going around as apparently in Connecticut a single franchise was selling a big Mac meal for 18 bucks but that's not typical, but I get that saying that doesn't make for an attention grabbing headline.

Just for context.. that McDonalds is at a rest stop on rt 95 south (I've been there)... and Darien, CT is a very expensive area. No one not trying to write a click bait story or score political points would consider it typical. That's close to being mad prices inside a sporting event are high.

Like most people I'm going to watch the Super Bowl. I don't know why they can't make this game a 1PM start. Everyone is watching this game no matter what time it comes on.

I know the story is going around as apparently in Connecticut a single franchise was selling a big Mac meal for 18 bucks but that's not typical, but I get that saying that doesn't make for an attention grabbing headline. I used to get McDoubles and/or Double cheeseburgers (which is the same with an extra slice of cheese) for $1 circa 2003/04. I don't know the details the Wayback is using, but I know my experience. According to www.usinflationcalculator.com/, that would be worth $1.72 in 2023 which I agree would be reasonable. Even if we assume $1.49, that's still 2.56. Writing off the roundup to $3 as nothing is ignoring an additional 28% increase. Some places are selling them for more than $3. Wages have certainly not kept up enough to absorb hand-waiving away extra 28% increases in prices. ...I am aware of the ridiculousness of getting this granular in debating inflation in context of American fast food hamburger restaurants and whipping out inflation calculators. Like I said a few days ago, I do appreciate the needlessly pedantic discussions. Don't tell me you're part of that stereotype that Comic nerds hate sports ? Personally, I don't hate sports. I just don't care. At all. Zero investment.

Don't tell me you're part of that stereotype that Comic nerds hate sports ? Nope. I love baseball. And I'm okay with football, but once the Seahawks are out for the season my interest drops to zero.
