If you take the Irish angle with a crime drama in NY, you also have the history of the NYPD. I don't know if Garth Ennis would be interested in doing such a comic, but I would think it would fit into some of his strengths as a writer.

Considering his love of Irish history and New York City, I'd like to see Garth Ennis do a NYC crime story with a generational angle and perhaps based around Irish mobsters. I'd think that type of crime comic could be pretty successful if done right. "Give those Irish hoodlums a drink down there!"

The Platoon sounds interesting, although Marvel already did something very similar to this with Frank Castle in the pages of The 'Nam in the early '90s.

I read the first Garth Ennis Punisher series, it was OK I suppose. I thought it got some ideas from Frank Miller's Daredevil.
The 2nd series I couldn't read more than a few issues, I was disgusted by the foul language and downright filth it wallows in.
Then I realised I don't like Ennis so ive read nothing since.

I haven't ready any of the Garth Ennis books on The Punisher. The reviews posted here by crazyoldhermit regarding Garth Ennis's work on The Punisher definitely has picqued my interest in this run.
I have read some of Garth Ennis's work on The Boys and Hitman. And I will definitely take a look at this series of books.
If it is the same approach as his other work on the two mentioned above, I suppose I will have to just take the over-the-top violence with a grain of salt and really take into consideration the actual work to see the trademark Garth Ennis humor in this work.

There's rather little over-the-top humor in Punisher MAX. I mean, it surfaces a little in the first couple arcs, then in the "Barracuda" arc a couple years or so later, and comes back with a vengence in Barracuda's spin-off miniseries, but that's pretty much it; whatever humor there is in P-MAX is primarily down to banter between a given set of characters. It has the effect of probably making it even more disturbing than even Preacher (no Arseface-type comic relief to act as the chaser for the whiskey, you could say).

If anyone is interested in reading this series Marvel is starting a line of Complete Collection paperbacks in January, with Vol 1 containing Born, In The Beginning and Kitchen Irish.

"The Slavers" storyline from MAX and the "Born" miniseries are among the best storylines I've ever read in comics, period (and I've been collecting since I was a 7 year old kid in the late 70's).

Does Platoon have a release date yet? It does not but I think Parlov is either finished or close to finished since he's set to do a Starlight sequel.

Man...after re-reading some of crazyoldhermit's reviews and re-reading Punisher Max in its entirety...I just had to bump this.
Even if you're not a big Punisher fan, you owe it to yourself to read this run if you're even slightly into gritty, dark crime narratives.

Another thing I love about Ennis' portrayal of Frank in this run, which I think people who have a particular disdain for the character can appreciate (and crazyoldhermit touches on in his reviews)...
Ennis doesn't romanticize what Frank is or what he does. He portrays Frank Castle as an extremely disturbed, monstrous force of nature who goes out and does something horrible every night in order to prevent himself from doing something even more horrible.
This version of Frank isn't your classical Frank who simply does what he does because he has a disdain for criminals and lives to avenge the loss of his family.
This Frank Castle is a truly sick man with an undying lust for murderous actions. Lucky for us, he just so happens to focus that monstrous aggression towards the lowest dregs that society has to offer instead of totally losing his grip on reality and lashing out at society in general.
It's absolutely haunting and Ennis does an amazing job at getting that across in a manner that isn't constantly shoved down your throat.
