I posted mine on the Classic Movies thread a while back, but here it is again: 1. Casablanca (1943) 2. King Kong (1933) 3. Dracula (1931) 4. Duck Soup (1933) 5. Freaks (1932) 6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) 7. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) 8. Pandora's Box (1929) 9. Yojimbo (1961) 10. City Lights (1931) We have VERY similar tastes with one exception. I watched Pandora's Box once and absolutely did not see the appeal. What am I missing? I liked it A LOT better the second time I saw it, in a revival house, with Diary of a Lost Girl as the second feature. That second viewing was a revelation. I've seen it a bunch of times since then. |

A Night At the Opera (1935) 10. Rashomon (1950) I wasn't alive to see a single one of these in theaters. You have a lot of great films that barely miss my Top Ten. Faust, Metropolis, Frankenstein, White Zombie, Carnival of Souls, A Night at the Opera, Rashomon. I like Modern Times and the Godfather a lot. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those classics (like Vertigo) that I'm not such a big fan of. |

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is one of those classics (like Vertigo) that I'm not such a big fan of. I suspect I saw it at the right time in my life. I was 18, only newly aware that politics were dirty, and full of idealism for myself and for the world. Don't get me wrong -- I still am -- but I think that's partly due to encountering Mr. Smith at that point. |

Don't get me wrong -- I still am -- but I think that's partly due to encountering Mr. Smith at that point. Sometimes I love Capra, and sometimes I think he goes a bit overboard. The villainy of Claude Rains in Mr. Smith is a little cartoony and I think the corruption depicted in the film is too much a stereotypical and simplistic "Grr! I hate government!" reaction. Its been a while since I saw it so I don't remember why I didn't like it more specifically than that. The Simpsons parody - in the Mel Gibson episode where they do a remake of Mr. Smith - is very very funny to me because it sort of reflects how over-the-top I view the original to be. I also hate Mr. Deeds Goes to Town because Mr. Deeds is such a huge sulky baby. But I saw The Bitter Tea of General Yen a few years ago and I loved it. |

Is this the German movie from the 1990s where she starts researching the heroic actions of the people in the town as they resisted Hitler's regime ... and finds out it was all just a bunch of hooey made up to protect the town fathers from the consequences of collaborating with the Nazis? Great movie! If I remember rightly, it's a true story. I hadn't thought about it in years. |

The Thin Red Line Incendies I've seen Incendies. That movie is MESSED UP! And very nice to see some love for The Thin Red Line. I've always much preferred it to Saving Private Ryan. |

Forgot about The Iron Rose. That has to go in the top 10. Now top 12. Jean Rollin did some good films and some crap, but Rose is freaking beautiful.
