Pauline Baynes' 1969 illustrated map of Middle-earth, just because it's a thing of absolute beauty...

Out of curiosity after hearing a radio commercial extolling podcasts and you can find a podcast on any subject, I googled Tolkien podcasts and got a list of about 30 or so. Has anyone checked out any Tolkien podcasts? Any recommendations? Any to stay away from? -M Missed this earlier. Haven't tried any and personally I probably wouldn't get into something like this until I re-read the books, which I do plan to do one of these days but most likely not for a couple years yet.
In general, I've enjoyed listening to a few podcasts here and there, and I like the format but the downside is that they are so time-consuming - most of the ones I've tried are 1.5 - 2.5 hours long. Of course you don't have to listen to the whole thing in one shot, but still.

First time I've seen that colour illustrated map - where did it first appear, in a new edition of the trilogy, or in an art book or something?

I'm curious to the source of it as well (I was going to try to awaken my dormant google fu skills to find if but since someone already asked, I'll wait and see if the answer is provided). -M

It was made available as a poster in 1970 to cash in on the surge of interest in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings among college students and the Hippie counter-culture. It was an officially sanctioned release though, and J.R.R. Tolkien himself provided Baynes with some new place names and corrected a few errors that were on his original 1954 map. The image I posted above isn't actually the whole poster; it also has some rather attractive header and footer illustrations, featuring characters from the LOTRs...

Yeah, a 1970 1st printing has long been on my wants list. My google search turned up one for sale but the asking price was $275, which is probably more than I can justify right now (especially since I spent the day car shopping and will soon have a car payment for the first time in 5 years). -M

The top and bottom illustrations of the Baynes map/poster also appear on the covers of the "Authorized Canadian Edition" of LoTR that I read in January 1976:

I'm down a big Star Wars podcast hole currently, so post-TROS, I may try and get back into some Tolkien reading and pods in prep for the forthcoming TV show.
