Yeah, those were neat but I'm thinking with the Tolkien's looking to further monetize Middle Earth we might see more in the near future. Maybe, but I think they are trying to monetize moreso than modernize, and I am not sure comics is a big enough ROI for them to invest time and effort into it. They kept trying to release the trade of the Hobbit in new editions with every film release and it never really set fire sales wise. And I am not sure the sales would make sense for any licensees to give it a go. The only way I see it is if one of the graphic novel divisions of the big book publishers wants to give it a go, I don't think any direct market publishers will see it as a viable license in that field. -M

With Christopher Tolkien's children seeming to be more commercially minded I wonder how long it will be until we do see a comic set in Middle Earth? I gather the rights issues for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit might make a straight adaptation of either difficult but other stuff would seem on the table. I'm not sure I necessarily want more, I'm slightly wary of the new Tolkien "products" being put out by Amazon and WB, but it is interesting to think about. We have had 1 Tolkien comic adaptation, the 3 issue Hobbit mini form Eclipse by Chuck Dixon with painted art by David Wenzel, and it is exceptional. There was also a pseudo-adaptation of the Bakshi movie into comics in the Warren Presents issue, but it used stills form the animated features instead of art created specifically for it. -M So, kinda like the LOTRs Fotonovel then? That was a comic book made up of stills from the animated movie. Here's my copy...

It's been said in the sports and RIP threads already but I thought my recollection fit better here. Yesterday the Lord of the Rings died: Before I had ever read the Hobbit or even knew who Tolkien was I knew the phrase Lord of the Rings as that was how everybody referred to Russell not only in my family but on TV as well. It was always, "Yeah, Michael Jordan is great, but he'll never beat the Lord of the Rings." So, you can imagine my surprise when I first saw the book...and it wasn't about basketball. The fun part of the above picture though is that those aren't all his rings, after like the third or fourth (I can't remember which) he told the ownership he'd had enough rings and would rather just be given cash or a new car instead and so they did so years later when some Celtics photographer came up with the idea of Russell with all eleven rings for a publicity shoot they had to go and ask former teammates to borrow their rings.

That's a pretty cool way to visualise it - I was wondering if there are any other variations of that image online, with Tolkien's map superimposed on other parts of the world and found one of Europe that looks good: I like that this one has the Shire right where England is.

Aw, typical. The Balkans are in Mordor.. I noticed that too - my first thought was, almost where Dracula is from, but I suppose Transylvania would be a little to the north?

My geography could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Romania is just south of where it says Ash Mountains, so yeah Dracula was an ally of Sauron. What I have always enjoyed is that when you overlay Middle over Europe the Sea of Nurnen is almost right on top of, and nearly the same size and shape of the Sea of Marmara which always made me see Middle Earth as just Europe in the far distant past as a kid.

The other thing that comes to mind is that Gondor roughly corresponds to Italy, and Mordor covers not only the Balknas but most of Greece, apart from the Peloponnese. So conceptually it might be said that we have the seat of the Roman Catholic church facing off against the home of Greek mythology, i.e. Christianity vs Paganism. Bit of a stretch, I suppose. ("Only a bit?", I hear someone say ...)

I'm just glad that Canada is somewhere in Valinor.
Helcaraxë, probably.

Not to get too far off track, but Greece has always been considered part of the Balkans, ever since the term was coined. There's more argument at the other end, i.e., where the Balkans end in the north.
