That looks amazing! I want one, to quote Tony Stark! It's possible , and quite probable, that it was translated into French, which I know is your first language. It was released in a number of countries in mainland European, but was never translated into English for the UK or U.S. markets.

Today I learned that in Europe they got a three-volume comic adaptation of the Ralph Bakshi LOTRs animated movie in 1978. It was drawn by Luis Bermejo Rojo, a Spanish artist, who some of you may know from Warren’s Creepy magazine in the '70s. The adaptation wasn't published over here in the UK or in the USA due to copyright problems, but I reckon we really missed out. The interior artwork -- not to mention the covers -- look gorgeous. Somebody needs to put this out again in an English translation. These scans are of the Spanish edition... As flawed as the Bakshi film was as an adaptation it did look beautiful and this book looks even more so.

I just came across something the other day that surprised me: there's a tech company that calls itself Palantir. Would they have had to pay for the right to use that name? And whether they did or didn't, how does everyone feel about them using it in this way? As you can probably guess, I don't like it myself.

Trademarks are usually specific to industries or product types, not universal, so I doubt the Tolkien estate has trademarked any of the names in the tech field unless for specific tech products like videogames. Its possible the founders were huge Tolkien geeks and chose the name to reflect that, but I don't have strong feelings one way or the other about it. -M

I just think it's simultaneously ridiculous and chilling (and also, sadly, unsurprising) that a company was purposefully named after a device used by the bad guy (who is evil incarnate) in a fantasy novel.

It's slightly more chilling when you realize that their software was what was seen to be monitoring private calls in the US during the war on terror and now has an AI for "predictive policing" .

Yes, they're definitely operating out of Mordor.

I'm inherently pessimistic. I have a hunch they'll butcher it just as Disney has butchered the Star Wars franchise.

In general, possibly. But with respect to Star Wars specifically? Without going through the entire franchise history in detail, I'd guess no, as far as my personal reactions have gone. As inferior as the Lucas prequels were to the originals in most respects, I don't think they were worse than most of what Disney has done - that I've seen. And the best of Disney's SW, e.g. The Mandalorian, have been relatively low-key side-shows rather than direct sequels or prequels to the main story-line of the original three movies. This is my off the cuff feeling, it's possible I might change my mind on further reflection.
But I admit I'm also influenced by a philosophical predilection for creators (but not their descendants, let alone any other 'owners' of the creative concept that might have somehow gained economic power over it) retaining control of their creations as long as they want to no matter how much I might hate what they do with it: I might not like every single thing Alexandre Dumas did with the Three Musketeers after the first novel but I'd rather have his Twenty Years After and the Vicomte de Bragelonne, etc than something done by whatever writers his publisher or whoever else gained control of the 'IP' might have selected.
After the author's or creator's death it should be a free for all, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm inherently pessimistic. I have a hunch they'll butcher it just as Disney has butchered the Star Wars franchise. Outside of the sequels I've enjoyed almost all of the Star Wars stuff that's come out by Disney. Rogue One and Andor were amazing, The Mandolorian was fantastic, the final season of Clone Wars and Bad Batch were super fun and even Obi-Wan and Boba Fett were entertaining. The Lord of the Rings show on Amazon though? While it was a decent fantasy drama, if they had named it something else I wouldn't have felt it was connected or a "rip off" of Tolkien's world which is pretty damning and this new venture seems less planned and more of a cash grab than Amazon's show so I can't see it even crossing that low bar.
