Oh hold it, you said soaring...

One of the most iconic in the last 30 years (though featuring a male hero) is Frank Miller's cover to Dark Knight #1 and of Batman and Carrie Kelly (a female Robin) against the Gothan skyline



#1 is a lightning strike creating a silhouette of the Batman, and works on several levels of design and is elegant in its simplicity. The second evokes so many classic Batman and Robin images, but the inclusion of Carrie highlights what makes this Batman story so different.

Miller continued to use that iconic image of Batman in the skyline to great effect throughout the story...



again serving as juxtaposition of evocations of the past to the current story and what made it tic.

He also uses the hero in the skyline imagery when juxtaposing Batman and Superman...



The iconic image of hero on skyline was also used by Alex Ross and Kurt Busiek to launch Astro City...



and inverted in this cover by Ross where the heroine is flying against the skyline but we only see it as a reflection in the bus' window...



Astro City and Ross would revisit the iconic skyline image several times over the years, startig with the launch of the first ongoing series...











of course Ross and Busiel playing with the skyline icon started with their collaboration on Marvels...



and Ross would continue the motif throughout his work on other projects...



Wonder Woman in the skyline will be a source of several images as well...











as would Supergirl..
