Only two images, please, RR. I really am going to be hard-nosed about that this year.

My #12 - THE ULTRA-HUMANITE (albino ape version)
There have been a lot of ape villains over the years, but this one stands out. First, you have the super-intelligent human brain transplanted into an ape's body thing. This is cool in a couple of ways. There's the obvious contrast between hyper-intellect and bestial exterior. Plus, while a super-smart bad guy's speech pattern can be intimidating enough on its own, it takes on a whole new dimension coming out of an ape's mouth. But this dude takes it a step further. He's not just an ape; he's an albino ape, which is an even more distinctive visual. Add that weird Kirby-esque harness/girdle/whatever he's wearing, and you've got one cool character.

Oddly enough, when i started thinking about this, not too many DC villains came to mind (a couple made the list). But two words to watch for... Kirby and purple. Day One - Ultron, by John Buscema and Roy ThomasThe ultimate man from machine, with a giant Oedipal complex, Ultron is gleaming metal and a robotic death's head with those cool things on the side of his (look, there i go... anthropomorphizing a machine!) head... ... and in his second appearance, drawn by both a young Barry (Windsor) Smith and on full art duties Sal Buscema, gives us the "I'm changing my body to fit the needs" robotic advantage.

I wished I've thought of him in the first place and your description of that harness/girdle/whatever is right on the nose and I've really like him a lot and he was very popular character in my area. Good selection here.

From zilch 's sublime Buscema Ultron to... #12: the Shaper of Worlds the ridiculous...Don't get me wrong. I think his look/concept is quite imposing--half-machine/half-Skrull-ian features, 18 feet tall per the Marvel wikia, Cosmic Cube-sourced--but when I came upon this panel a few years ago in Fantastic Four #137, something about the fact that this fearsome opponent is shown in that tried-and-true John Buscema pose--arms crossed over the chest--well, I just about lost it. To this day I can't look at this panel without cracking up.

Number 12: Unicorn was one of the first Iron Man villains I ever saw. His devotion to Russia and to the Titanium man made Unicorn such a tragic character. His whole goal was to please them all the while getting his ass kicked and usually being left behind or ridiculed by Titanium man.. I thought also he was a perfect Iron Man villain. Tony Stark's capitalist ways played well off of Unicorns Russia ideology not to mention his costume was just awesome. The colors, the Unicorn on the front and the awesome helmet just wowed me at 11 years old. I totally forgot about the Unicorn but I always liked this look too - it was Keith Giffen, right? And he could shoot rays aout of the top of his helmet where a unicorn's horn would be? Nice unicorn design on the front too.

12. BlacklashThe first time I ever saw this character was in OHOTMU, and I remember being struck by the effectiveness of the design. It is elegant and not over-complicated like many villain costumes. The matte black bodysuit is simple but effective, while the purple gloves, boots, cape and cowl provide contrast and give the outfit some flair. Combined with the flared collar and chain, and green crest they give the whole ensemble a touch of the swashbuckler. Overall, a very striking costume. Too bad they wasted it on a two-bit thug like Blacklash.

The Composite Super-Man What kind of genius costume is this ? DC's two biggest heroes combined in binary fashion, similar to Two-Face, another great visual, along with the green face similar to a Brainiac, and all the powers of the Legion of Super-Heroes ? Overkill you say ? Yes absolutely, but what a genius costume. Caught my attention back in the Bronze Age with that, wait for it, Ernie Chua / Chan cover. Yes, I had to buy it, and I loved it !

The Composite Superman was on my (long) list of contenders. Though he didn't make my final cut, I'm glad he appeared on someone's list. Oh, and don't forget that his origin involved that Silver Age staple; lightning striking something he was standing next to and imbuing him with superpowers.

True that !
Can you imagine how ridiculously super-powered this character is with the entire Legion of Super-Heroes as his power base ?

No duplicates from my list so far but two of my also-rans have popped up (Iron Jaw, Composite Superman) have, s well as one (9-Jack-9) I wished I'd thought of and two (Lord Lazee, Ir/Ur/Ar) that would never, ever have occurred to me. Well done, lads!
Cei-U! I summon the variety!

Yes the Unicorn, or Milos as his friends liked to call him, did shoot the laser from his horn. Also I think he had super strength. He is one I have been looking for a great figure to collect. But haven't found one yet. the closest I have seen is a bust at one of my LCS. I totally forgot about the Unicorn but I always liked this look too - it was Keith Giffen, right? And he could shoot rays aout of the top of his helmet where a unicorn's horn would be? Nice unicorn design on the front too.

Well done, lads! Cei-U! I summon the variety! I am loving the diversity and variety of villains so far as well. This year is a really fun one highlighting all of the different faces of evil which are so colorful and fanciful in the world of comic books. The best thing that I like about these kinds of lists is that it helps me create a shopping list of back issues to hunt down and read which I might not have ever done until seeing and reading these posts. What makes for a truly great villain indeed!
