When it comes to hoarders in general, I feel sorry for them. I know many people dont, and feel they created their own problem and that they arent worthy of helping but I think the problem needs a multifaceted approach, that forced clean-outs dont really work unless the hoarder themselves acknowledges they have a problem and need help.

You can tell the difference between a collector and a hoarder because a hoarder just has stuff all over the place and its a very unclean environment. Its like a person I visited in person earlier this year. His house was disgusting, the inside was filthy, the carpets hadnt been cleaned for a very long time, there were insects crawling about on the walls and items and none of the rooms were clean and there was just stuff everywhere. Its fair to say that chaos reined in that house but to the owner of the house he seemed oblivious to the chaos around him which made it all the sadder.

Well, I think the kind of hoarder you're portraying here is an extreme example, the kind you see on reality television. I suspect most real-life hoarders aren't living in those kinds of extreme conditions. I've known several hoarders in my life, and all were more or less functional, able to conduct a normal (and sanitary) lifestyle while obsessing over acquiring things for which they had no possible need. |

When I think of hoarders I think of people so compelled to acquire acquisitions that it overtakes their life. They sometimes get very angry or violent too, when people point out to them they are a hoarder because their items are everything to them, which is why when it becomes such a problem professional help is necessary.

I think you're jumping to an extreme assumption based on little evidence, Z. As with most mental and behavioral illnesses, most who suffer from the problem are not the extreme outliers. Be cautious when making sweeping judgments about any group of people  |

You're entitled to your opinion, Z, and I'm responding as a poster and not an administrator when I tell you that I think the opinion you've stated comes off as sweeping, ill-informed, and somewhat offensive. It's also out in left field from what the original post was discussing. You've done nothing wrong, broken no rules, and you have every right to continue to express your opinion. I just don't think it's a very informed one. |

I think we can express difference of opinion and get controversial without passing sweeping judgment on a group we know very little about, nor straying so far from the implicit crux of what the op was asking. When you buy more comics than you need, is that hoarding? That's really not the kind of hoarder you're talking about. |

The question originally was simple but as the thread progressed, the topic did come to question what is hoarding, and people chimed in with their own individual thoughts. But its also interesting, because you say my opinion comes off as sweeping, ill-informed, and somewhat offensive. And yet I have not made any comment in regards to any member here.
