My #1 - Lex Luthor (prison uniform version)When DC gave Luthor a costume, I think they completely missed the point of their own character. They wanted Luthor to be able to go toe to toe with Superman, and so they tried to turn him into just another super-villain. Sure, super vs super can be fun. And I like the green-and-purple combo as much as the next guy. But the old Luthor was the polar opposite of Superman, and the visual reflected that. He was a purer contrast to Superman, and that made for a more satisfying conflict. I always felt that Lex Luthors suit, in its various incarnations , was never meant to balance the scales of power with Superman, It was meant to give him options on the battlefield and transport. But I see your point that it moved him away from his strength of being a super intellect.

Pvt. Johnny Doe, Our Army at War 233, June 1971, Kanigher and Kubert But everybody knows Johnny Doe. What’s worse, anybody can become Johnny Doe. And in 1971, everyone in America knew that for a fact. Excellent write up and scary.

My favorite villain is my favorite design. I like a good cloak. Even better if what lies beneath it is something cool like bees or armor. I would have preferred you go the bees route with this selection, myself. That was my first day entry.

1. Catwoman (purple dress version)For my final pick, I walk well-trodden grounds. When I was getting seriously into superhero comics in the 1980s, Catwoman was a major supporting character in Batman comics; with plots involving her attempting to go straight, a budding romance with Bruce Wayne, etc. She even had her own back-up feature in Detective Comics for a while. This was when I fell in love with the character, and this is the look I will always associate with her. It is slinky, sexy, and definitely feminine, but it is a sophisticated kind of sexiness, with the flask of leg through the long slit of the skirt. And somehow manages to not look ridiculous in action sequences. So this is my Catwoman and was always going to be my number one choice.

Baron Karza The single coolest looking villain IMO Sort of Vader, sort of Doom, sometimes centaur Dat missile in front and the long curly hair and horns Someday when I find the Michael Golden commission I have of him I'll post it Merry CCF Christmas to all and a special shout out once again to Kurt for all his work and dedication

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas the Doctor is making house calls, but NOT the traditional green and ironclad Doc you all know. My Doctor is......Doctor Demonicus from Godzilla #4 in 1977. This purple and white clad caped monster maker was great enough to face the Big G and then move onto confronting the Shogun Warriors and the Avengers! Take your medicine or else!!!

#1 Karnilla as she appeared in Thor #165-7 Jack KirbyWhen I saw the topic I immediately knew who my #1 would be: Karnilla, on the strength of how she appeared in Thor #165-7. I know her look varied back then in the Tales of Asgard and Thor stories--at times she appeared without a headdress; or she looked more haglike, with a long thin face and slashes for eyebrows (esp. in the Bill Everett-inked issues)--but for me, strictly in terms of her visual design, Kirby knocked it out of the park with Karnilla in these three issues. I wasn't a regular reader of Thor but I remember being very struck by these panels when thumbing through issues #165 and #166. I know she's wearing markedly different designs here, so I'm including these as examples of a character whose overall look captivated me. Now if I have to choose just one specific Karnilla design to submit, here it is below--my favorite look, from #167. I love the relatively understated headdress; the long sleek beautiful hair (more attractive than the poufy hair); the deep blue color of her attire; the long sleeves; and the hypnotic Kirbyesque patterns/designs on her clothing. Stunning IMO.

Thanks james and @mechagodzilla. Mecha, I wanted to include the very striking Hela but couldn't fit her in ...so I'm glad you and others had her on your lists and posted such great images.

Pvt. Johnny Doe, Our Army at War 233, June 1971, Kanigher and Kubert Wow, I wouldn't have thought of him in a billion years but that's a powerful pick Hal. If this was a game with winners and losers I can safely say you wouldn't be in the latter group. Thanks, wht. As it turned out, I went with a batch of similar "one-shot" villains, I think because they made such an impression on me and were not watered down by having other versions done of them, thus preserving their uniqueness.

I know the comic may seem tame by today's standards, but back then, that story was a punch to the gut from DC.

Hmmm... Our #1 entries match, but I thought we'd long since established that we disagree about everything.

Posting on the fly from my sister's house so no picture until I get home in a few days, Anyhoo... Usually when I come up with a topic, I know exactly what my top pick will be. Not this year. There were a lot of candidates, some that have appeared lower down on my list, some that ultimately failed to make the cut. In the end, I settled on #1 MODOK
For some odd reason, I relate to this weirdo's big brain, useless body, and hi-tech mobility device. Go figure. The ne plus ultra of Jack Kirby's obsession with giant fetuses, MODOK is just a great design. And with that, I'm out. Catch you all on the flipside. Cei-U! I summon a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for us all! Nice one. One of my favorite Marvel villains fer-sure. And he's had a surprisingly good 21st century! Besides headlining "Super-Villain Team-Up: Modok's 11" he also showed up in one of my very favorite issues of the "For Kids" Avengers title (Which is far, far, more fun and all around better than the last 40-50 years of the regular Avenger comic.) Guest Starring Spidoc, Capdoc, Gi-Doc, Woldoc, Stormdoc, Irondoc and Hulkdoc!
