Mixed emotions this Christmas. I received a new record player (I haven't had one in years). I also received my best friend from college (who became my brother-in-law)entire record collection. It was given to me because he passed away from cancer & he wanted me to have his records. We became friends because we had similar tastes in music.
It's amazing the different memories that hearing certain songs on a record triggered vs hearing them on a CD or off the radio. They brought back happy/sad memories at the same time in both my wife & I. We realized in some small way those albums brought Steven & I together in college & thru his friendship I met his sister & fell in love & got married. So our whole life together happened because two guys liked Yes, Joan Jett, Foreigner, Beach Boys, Styx etc.

My only Comic Book related gifts this year is that I got four Justice Guild Members (Action Figures) except Cat Man. I should get Cat Man in a month on backorder. My friend will mail it to my home.

My wife bought me a couple of comic-related books for Xmas, in the shape of IDW's Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 1 and the From Hell Companion. As the name suggests, Star Wars: The Classic Newspaper Comics Volume 1 collects all of the Russ Manning Star Wars comic strips that ran in U.S. newspapers from March 1979 through to August 1980, along with the Russ Helm and Alfredo Alcala adventure "The Planet of Kadril", which ran from August to October 1980. I haven't actually dipped into this volume very much as yet, but it looks to be a lovely collection, with the comic strips exquisitely reproduced on good quality paper stock. Having said that, I am very familiar with the majority of these SW strips from the re-prints that Dark Horse put out in the mid-1990s. However, whereas the Dark Horse re-prints cropped, re-colured and re-arranged the strips to make them more suitable for the 24 page monthly comic format, this volume presents the strips exactly as they appeared at the time -- unaltered, mostly in black & white, and with the original colouring intact for the Sunday serial installments. As for the From Hell Companion, I've read about a third of this so far and it's great. The companion provides a fascinating, in-depth glimpse at the creation of Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's masterful From Hell, with most of the commentary in the companion being Campbell's. However, the book reproduces large sections of Moore's original (and previously unseen) script alongside the relevant pages of From Hell itself. What's really interesting about Moore's scripts is the HUGE amount of detail that he goes into about what exactly Campbell should be putting into each and every panel of the comic -- regularly writing over a thousand words of description just for one panel! Of course, the artwork itself is ultimately left for Campbell to decide upon, and he didn't always include absolutely everything that Moore instructed him too, but it really shows just how much input Moore had in how From Hell was drawn, as well as the panel-to-panel "flow" and pacing of the story. If you're a big fan of Alan Moore, and of From Hell specifically, then this is an essential book IMHO.

Yeah, I got a lot of music stuff too, including The Bootleg Series Vol 12 - The Best of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966 by Bob Dylan, Live! by Bob Marley & the Wailers, and a Simon & Garfunkel live album all on CD. I also got three vinyl LPs: B.B. King's Live at the Regal, the Grateful Dead's American Beauty, and a 200g audiophile pressing of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.
