Add Sam Glanzman to the list and I wouldn't argue it. And thanks for the tip on Amazon Smile. I never knew that, but next purchase will definitely set that up and make sure I do it every time. -M Colquehon ? European ? I haven't heard of him(?) before. Charley's War. Brilliant UK war comic; probably the best war comic made

Excellent! Russ is second only to the incredible John Severin (& just ahead of John's remarkable sister, Marie) at the head of my favorite artists ever.

Great thread for one of my favorites. Russ is definitely one of the top five war comic illustraters of all time. (For my money: Kurtzman, Colquehon, Severin, Heath, Kubert... willing to argue...) One way to support the Hero Initiative (besides direct donation) is to link any purchase you make at Amazon to Amazon Smile. You can choose any charity you'd like. The Hero Initiative is an accepted charity, Even though it's only .05% of every purchase I make, I feel good knowing that the .05% goes to comics creators whose work I've loved. Add Sam Glanzman to the list and I wouldn't argue it. And thanks for the tip on Amazon Smile. I never knew that, but next purchase will definitely set that up and make sure I do it every time. -M Glanzman's excellent, too. I was so pleased when I heard that Dover Books is going to reprint his A Sailor's Story and some of his USS Stevens material in a new HC. It hasn't been solicited yet, but I'll let people know when it is.

Just a reminder that in the next couple weeks "Flesh And Steel: The Art Of Russ Heath HC" is due to appear. This book has been delayed a number of times so lets hope it finally hits the shelves this time. I've seen previews and it looks gorgeous. Also hopefully it's production pleases if not financially benefits Russ in some way. Of course it is based on a museum exhibit in Europe (Spain I think) where comic art seems to go much more respected and appreciated.

What Kubert had to go through when working working with his talented confrere Russ Heath. Something further reminded of by DubipR's storied lunch.

Elaborate more! I wanna hear tales! Russ is a ribald guy. He tells old man non-PC humor jokes and loved to show me the artwork of lots of naked women he painted pieces of. So when I brought up his Betty Page pages and his Penthouse Comix stuff, he just said "Hey, I like drawing T&A". Probably one of the highlights of Russ showing me his artwork was that he still had some painted pieces from his late teens/early 20s. I swear, these were nothing short of beautiful. A painting of his first wife, some war pieces when he was 19... incredible stuff. He had original pages from Sgt Rock, his Jonah Hex comic he did a few years back, all sorts of stuff. Some adult pages of stuff that never came to fruition, some National Lampoon work... It would be nice if Fantagraphics or someone would put together a collection of his erotic art. As far as I know, I haven't seen any of the things he did for Playboy or Penthouse or whoever but I remember from a couple fill-in issues he did for Marvel - a Son of Satan and a Ka-Zar - that he certainly had a gift for drawing beautiful women.

You've never read any Little Annie Fanny? I know Dark Horse traded up the entire run of Little Annie Fanny in 2 volumes a while back. Russ helped paint and lay out the pages with Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder, for close to 9 years. While his name isn't every episode, he did quite a bit of work on the run. His Penthouse Comix stuff, I'm sure you can find online on a adult comics site somewhere. Russ drawing lesbian pirates... can't go wrong with that. But I do agree, his adult stuff should be traded up.

Oh, I didn't realize he'd worked on Annie Fanny. I've seen it but it never really appealed to me, for some reason. From memory I can't say I recognize anything of Heath's style in there, but maybe I haven't looked at it closely enough. I'll have a look around online for the other stuff. Looking forward to the collection bendaydot mentioned.
