The funny little things we remember... Herc's dialogue includes the word "doest". Someone wrote in to tell Stan that the correct second-person present indicative form of "do" in Middle English is "dost", not "doest", and the letter was printed in a subsequent issue. Stan's reply acknowledged the mistake and vowed to use "dost" from then on, and then added, "Like the old saying says, ashes to ashes and doest to dost". And I've remembered that quip for fifty years.

Now I'm picturing an infinite number of miniature Batmen hopping around on infinite typewriters banging out the works of Bill Finger. Since you like it that much, I'll give you the Finger again!

Might wanna see a doctor, 'cause that Finger's got a death ring.

Hey Hal, I don't want to start any drama, so even though you waved the Finger I'll extend my hand in peace (all fingers in proper places). In fact, we should do lunch...

Superman by French legend Moebius... Im gonna pick a nit- This and the other Superman pages posted by guest artists are not splash pages. They are posters for a anniversary issue. I believe a splash page is a page that belongs to an actual story.

A gorgeous Blackhawk splash from the recently deceased Dan Spiegle: In my early days of collecting and reading comics, I didn't care much for Dan Spiegle's work, but word of mouth on Blackhawk was so good that I bought some back issues and my eyes were opened. Dan became one of my top favorites, and I bought everything of his that was published from then on (I wasn't foolish enough to attempt to conquer the vast catalog of back issues with Dan's artistry!).

What issues of Blackhawk did Spiegle work on? I recently read the Showcase Blackhawk volume, which featured Dick Dillin art and it turned into quite the slog by the end of it. Repetitive anf formulaic, okay in small doses, but not in large chunks. I love the concedpt of the Blackhawks and I like some of the later Blackhawk stuff I have read, but want to look into other eras and the Spiegle stuff looks interesting. -M

@mrp , Spiegle and Mark Evanier took over the Blackhawk title in 1982, after a lackluster revival failed in the mid-70s. It was so meh that it didn't even make it to the DC Implosion. Evanier and Spiegle crafted a litte gem that went form #251- #273. The stories were crisly paced, the art some of Spiegle's best and the tone of the book adult without being inappropriately "dark." And what a run of covers, that included work by Kane, Chaykin, and Cockrum as well as Spiegle. A little corner of the DC Universe that remained untouched by stupidity. Here's a little bit on it: www.cosmicteams.com/quality/profiles/blackhawks4.html
