Oh. Jim Woodring. Duh.
There are a couple of Indy creators who worked in animation before comics, and they're all REALLY good storytellers - Jeff Smith, Kathy Malkasian.

M.T. "Penny" Ross, who did the art for comics like Mamma's Angel Child (circa 1908).

From the last few decades, the Hernandez brothers, Gilbert and Jaime, are the standouts that spring to mind.

I never mentioned him in my other posts but Jim Starlin was hailed as one of the best storytellers back in the day.
