Hellboy 1955: Burning Season #1Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson Art by Paolo Rivera Summery: Hellboy, Susan and the Professor head down to the Florida everglades to investigate a series of strange deaths by burning. Plot: The pairing of Roberson and Mignola, though the longest sustained colaboration at this point, has largely ran very hot and cold. Some stories the pair come out with are red hot and feel like instant classics while others just leave you feeling left in the cold wondering why Mignola has decided to hand Hellboy over to this guy and there hasn't really been a story in between...until now. Other than the fact that the cover is an absolute fake out and this isn't a book about Hellboy fighting dinosaurs in some land that time forgot style pocket dimension there's nothing here the terribly disappoints you; it's a competent story that details an investigation into mysterious deaths that leads to Hellboy encountering an entity made of fire that he can't beat with brute force. It has some good action, some short but solid character bits with Susan, the Professor and Hellboy bonding and a nice bit of history thrown in but in the end it just feels a little too been there done that as we already saw a monster created by collective grief in 1998's Abe Sapien: Drums of the Dead. So in the end we don't have anything that you can complain about but nothing really to hold onto either; making this a bit like a frozen pizza version of Hellboy; no body will hate it because hey, frozen pizza is still pizza, but no body will say it's their favorite either. Art: I think by far the stronges element of the book was the art by Rivera; I absolutely love the characterization he brings to Hellboy's face. It's tough line to walk, you need Hellboy to look like his face is roughly hewn out of granite by someone with only a passing knowledge of human anatomy to make him look right but at the same time you have to be able to convey emotions as well. It's a balance that even Mignola himself struggles with at times as he occasionally slips and Hellboy will look a tad too cartonish with an unhinged jaw as he yells in a panel or too but Rivera just seems to really get it creating fantastically emotive scnes with Hellboy both while he casually interacts with the police of podunk and while he's engulfed in the flames of the fire spirit. And boy, when we finally see him emerge is that fire spirit a sight to see; you really feel like it's a creature made of flame as it's anatomy seems to flicker from panel to panel giving it a great visual. So while the story might just be okay the art is fantastic. Grade: 7.5/10 (for the art!)

Future Quest Presents #7Written by Phil Hester Art by Steve Rude Summary: Birdman, Avenger and Falcon 7 finally come face to face with the full menace of Mentok the Mindtaker! Plot: I've really been enjoying the variety of stories this anthology has brought us so far, but this colaboration between Hester and Rude with Birdman has been hands down the best thing to come from this series yet; heck I think it even might be better than the original Future Quest series that spawned this book; the mix of that classic Saturday morning cartoon action with modern comic book introspection with a dash of the humor from Birdman's stint on Adult Swim made for a perfect book in my mind. About the only thing disappointing about this story is that it had to end; I'm really left wanting Hester and Rude to keep telling more adventures of Birdman after this though to be fair the ending with him yelling ,"Biiiirrrdddd Maaannn!" as he flew off into the coming dawn was pretty perfect so I guess the thing to do is hope the next chapter is as great as the last. Art: I don't know what more can be said about how awesome the Rude Dude is here; he just seems to intrinsically get what makes super hero comics so fun. Every panel just feels like your childhood memories of why you fell in love with the genre in the first place; his style is just like a love letter to your youth and that feeling is what makes each and every panel so excellent. It's great because it doesn't feel like something produced to put dinner on the table, it looks like art by someone who just loves the idea of superheroes as much as us readers do which really makes it special. Steve Rude should be cloned a million times just so he can do the art on every super hero comic out there. Grade:10/10

thoughts on last week's books... The Archies #5: I enjoyed seeing the group falling apart and Jughead (usually a go with the flow guy) having enough and quitting. Glad Tegan and Sara (and Bingo) helped them get back together in the end. I liked the scene with Jughead and Archie talking about how the band should be everyone's dream and fun--not just Archie's dream. looking forward to what happens with the record deal and Blondie!! (in the next issue). The pacing and dialog of this story was very realistic. I had friends in college that had a band and they put out a couple of cds and toured, but nothing ever came of it. They still get together and play now and then for the fun of it. This story reminded me of them. 8/10
Superman 41: This story did not grab me. I think Superman was so gung ho on saving the aliens' world as their story paralleled Krypton's (minus the faith based reasons the aliens were so accepting of their fate). I did like Superman's point of perhaps their God did send him....but the story fell flat and was not enjoyable. Not sure what Robinson was trying to do here. I did like the art. 3/10

Super Sons #13. Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art by Carlo Barberi. Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli.
Another awesome issue. Focuses on Jon & Damian at school. But Damian's Mom Talia comes to visit. Why? she has been hired to kill Lois Lane Kent.
Wow. Robin's Mom is there to kill Superboy's Mom. What a plot twist!
Tomasi has really impressed me with his work on the Super titles. When Bendis takes over I hope Tomasi gets his pick of books to write. Barberi does a great job on art. The kids look like kids not little adults. So disappointed this title will be gone in a few months.
8/10. Yeah, this was a really fun story; I loved the banter between Jon and Damian and I'm definitely going to miss this book when it's gone. Lois may not have the training Talia does but I'm thinking she'll do pretty well for herself.

It'll be well worth it, the Space Ghost story that started the anthology was good but this last Birdman story was absolutely amazing. I really wish there were more comics being put out with this kind of bright tone; I'd gladly take it over the new wave that DC is currently putting out.
