And indeed, the "Superpowers derived from a meteor strike" part is very different from Superman's extraterrestrial (i.e. immigrant) origin story, while being the same as J. Michael Straczinski's "Rising Stars" setup from 1999. So which of these would you possibly recommend more then, this mini-series or JMS' Superman: Earth One GNs? I haven't read Superman:Earth One, so I can't comment between them, but as you can tell I think Secret Identity is well worth your time. My local Books-A-Million had several copies on the discount rack for $8 recently too! I enjoy JMS as well.

I'd recommend Morrison's All-Star Superman primarily, but given a choice between those two, Secret Identity is a much more fulfilling read.

Superman: Earth One may be the worst comic I've ever read. It's the only comic I wanted to tear into little pieces and put on the fire so nobody else would inadvertently waste time reading even part of it. Unfortunately it was a library book so I didn't. Fortunately it means I didn't pay money for that literary dog-turd.

To ameliorate for my disdain for Superman I decided to give Batman: Earth One a shot. I gave up about a quarter way through. It was also awful. Different writer, I know...but also truly awful.

Fortunately it means I didn't pay money for that literary dog-turd. Wow, given your general disdain for Superman, that's saying something. Okay, along with everyone's else input, choice made then! Secret Identity is better by far compared to Earth One. Earth One to me just feels very "of the moment" and not a work that will likely be looked back on as a classic. Another attempt to modernize Superman and have him align with the cultural and aesthetic sensibilities of a particular era, free him from past continuity, and establish another universe to tell stories in. The problem with creating these new universes is that they don't try to avoid the problems of the old ones. In the interest of maintaining a particular status quo or "vision" for what the character should be like, they too eventually get bogged down by continuity, contradictions, retcons, and inconsistencies, and eventually cause the mythology to become impenetrable for new readers. It's just another COIE/Flashpoint/Rebirth type of reset, except told in graphic novel format rather than monthly issues. Secret Identity breaks all of those conventions because it tries to tell a complete, closed story with a beginning, middle, and end. That by itself gives it many more tools to tell an interesting story.
