As an experiment, in late high school/early college, I watched the Young and the Restless for a while. It was sort of entertaining but I got bored of it eventually.

Like I said earlier, I mostly saw them when I was home sick, and during the summers; so, storylines were never that central to me. However, I did tend to remember some characters and would notice them when they popped up in other things. Charles Frank, who played Dr Jeff Martin, on All My Children, was one. He plays a bomber pilot in a MASH episode, who Hawkeye forces to see the damage that war brings to innocents. he also plays Scott Carpenter in The Right Stuff. Whenever I saw him, my first thought was "Jeff Martin!" Ruth Warrick (Phoebe Tyler) was another. In my book, she was the ultimate soap opera "heel" and I can't watch Citizen Kane without thinking of AMC. Matthew Cowles, who played pimp Billy Clyde Tuggle was another. He's in the Bette Midler movie, Stella; and, my wife and I both uttered, "Billy Clyde," when he appears in the film (it's a favorite of my wife's). Then, there was Judith Light, from One Life to Live, who went on to the prime time sitcom, Who's the Boss?

Then, there was Judith Light, from One Life to Live, who went on to the prime time sitcom, Who's the Boss? Ah yes, Charles Frank--the Jeff I grew up with--popped up a lot on TV. I remember he had a recuring role on LA Law, as a suave yet shady investment trader who gave Roxanne insider tips. I remember when Judith Light started on OLTL. I stopped watching shortly thereafter (not because of her, but because...life.) Years later I was so surprised to read that she'd established herself as one of the mainstays of that show;and then there was her primtime stint on WTB; and she's done some excellent stagework too. But I remember thinking when she started out that she so "unsoap"-like. She seemed different from many of the other performers back then--more willing to seem like an everyday person rather than a glamorous being. Matthew Cowles' s Billy Clyde--another great, unforgettable character. He really came to prominence when I wasn't a regular AMC viewer but I've read a lot about the Billy Clyde days and the havoc he caused. Cowles died a few years ago and at the time of his death had been married to Christine Baranski for many years. Always loved the sublime Ruth Warrick as Phoebe and in Kane (also in his Journey of Fear). Speaking of AMC (and I'm guessing some of you already know this but for those who may not), Eileen Herlie played Myrtle Fargate for many years. Yes, the same Eileen Herlie who'd played Gertrude in Olivier's Hamlet film.

Julianne Moore got her start playing Frannie Hughes (and her twin Sabrina) on As the World Turns. Meg Ryan was Betsy Andropolous, also on ATWT.

Marisa Tomei too--she was Marcy (I think?) on the As the World Turns. She dated a guy that was really well off and she was kind of struggling, if I recall correctly. I think she ultimately married a prince on the show and left. Parker Posey is another who started on ATWT. She was Hal's niece. I can't remember her character's name, but she was in a love triangle with Hutch and Rosanna. Fun remembering all this stuff!

In the reverse, Tony Geary appeared in an episode of The Partridge Family, plus several other tv shows, before landing the gig on General Hospital.
Rick Springfield had been a teen idol in Australia, then had done the animated series Mission Magic and several tv spots (including the Six Million Dollar man, Wonder Woman and Battlestar Galactica) before landing the gig on General Hospital. He had been working on the album Working Class Dog, which was released and shot up the charts, boosting the ratings of the series, while his appearances on the soap helped sell tickets at his concerts, as he toured and taped the show.
Eric Braeden had been a fixture on tv and movies, before The Young and the Restless, appearing on Rat Patrol, under his real name (Hans Gudegast), then in sci-fi movies, like Escape From The Planet of The Apes and Colossus, The Forbin Project.
Les Tremayne, who played the patriarch of the Quartermain family, on General Hospital, had appeared on radio and films, as well as essaying the role of Mentor, on Shazam, before joining the soap. Stuart Damon, who played son Allen, had co-starred in the British adventure series, The Champions, as well as played Prince Charming, opposite Lesley Ann Warren, in a notable 1965 tv production of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.

It was a shock to see Asa Buchanan (Phil Carey) pop up--as the hero yet--in "Wicked As They Come", a little-known yet not-uninteresting 1950s movie I happened to catch some months ago.

My grandmother loved that Cinderella special-and Damon! I've seen GH maybe a dozen times in as many years. In one of few times I watched GH, I remember Damon and Amber Tamblyn doing a great rendition of Someone to Watch Over Me. It was for the Nurses' Ball or something, which from I've read was an annual event for GH.

Growing up, Young & the Restless, Bold & the Beautiful and As the World Turns were almost required viewing. With the advent of VCRs, my older sister would tape these daily for her and our father to watch in the evenings after supper. I mostly kept up with them through this method, even watching them live if I was home sick from school or out of school for holiday or what have you. (The long feud/hatred between Victor Neuman and Jack Abbott is one of the best EVER!) My sister still watches them to this day and so did our dad till he passed. Though I hadn't watched them in some time, when our dad was in need of ongoing blood transfusions or cancer treatments, I caught up on them again whenever I went with him to his latest appt. Even if he dozed off in the treatment chair, I always turned the TV to CBS at 4pm cause it was time for Victor. Before that, my mom watched the ABC shows, mainly All My Children and General Hospital. I don't recall much from AMC (other than Erica Kane!) but GH, I do remember the thrill and romance of Luke & Laurie and their wedding day (and yes, even Rick Springfield in the ER). Dad also used to watch a half-hour soap called Ryan's Hope. The only thing I remember about that was Kate Mulgrew was a cast member. Then of course, there was the best parody of a soap opera ever: Soap!

Soap was fantastic, for the first two seasons and the third was good to great; but, season 4 was rather week and it wasn't a surprise when they cancelled it.

Seems to me they used to show it fairly regularly, from the 1965 premiere into the early 70s. I have the one dvd set of the Champions, that was released by A&E 9leaving the series incomplete) and it was a pretty cool series, with the three heroes gaining special abilities after crashlanding in Tibet, and being schooled by some monks. Dave "Dart Vader" Prowse appeared in the opening teaser of one episode, as a weightlifter who gets shown up by one of the men (the team consisted of two men and a woman).

Generally speaking, I hate soap operas. That said, I used to watch Dallas and Dynasty pretty regularly in the '80s, when I was staying over at my Grandmother's house as a kid because she was a big fan of both shows. I was never very into them, but I kinda tolerated them.
The two biggest British soap operas, Eastenders and Coronation Street, are both unrelentingly dour, pessimistic and grey. That said, Coronation Street does at least have some deliciously black humour in it on occasion, but really, I try to avoid soaps as much as I can and I'm pretty successful in that endeavour.

My guilty pleasure soap opera show that I watched once in awhile when I was a teenager in the mid 1990s was Days of Our lives and later on the goofy Sunset Beach that had Tabitha the witch and that weird doll Timmy I think their names were.
Nowadays these days I dont watch it religiously, but Bold and the Beautiful I watch from time to time. I hate the Bill character. such an ahole lol.
I have a question, what job or business does everyone work in the show Young and the Restless? In Bold and the Beautiful I know everyone in the show the characters are involved in a fashion clothing modeling company which Bill is the man in charge etc

Cowles also appeared in a bit part in one of the great Westerns ever, "Lonesome Dove," (1989), as Monkey john, a spineless, fleabitten outlaw. Justa s creepy as he was as Billy Clyde, but lots less to do. Cowles died in 2014. So good at playing sleazeballs, he was for 30 years, the husband of Christine Baranski, of Broadway and "The Good Wife." And another guy from AMC, Michael Tylo (Matt Connolly) had what amounted to a cameo in "Lonesome Dove," as the doomed Dee Boot. And you are so right... Ruth Warrick was probably best known (other than as Phoebe) for her turn in "Citizen Kane" as Kane's first wife. We see the dissolution of their marriage in the famous sequence of breakfast scenes.
