Flash 1702.25 USD/3.50 CAN @ March 2001 "Blood Will Run, Part One: Breaking the Foundation" Writer: Geoff Johns Penciller: Scott Kolins Inker: Doug Hazlewood Letterer: Gaspar Saladino Colorist: James Sinclair & Digital Chameleon Editor: Joey Cavalieri Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Synopsis: The Flash is running through Keystone City sharing some thoughts about how he grew up in the city that he loved. Later on, as Wally West, he and his wife are attending a professional hockey game, when he received a call from Jesse Quick regarding business and pleasure as she engaged a supervillain in battle. As Wally hung up the cell phone and about to excuse himself from his wife, he spotted Len Snart aka Captain Cold and was surprised to see him, as he knew Cold bolted Keystone City with Mirror Master from the previous issue. Before he could act on it, a police officer approached Wally if he can have The Flash help out as backup with a trouble the police are having at Keystone Motors. In another part of the city, the villain Pied Piper is back in Keystone City dressed as a civilian, and thinking he can do well by starting a crime spree as a criminal, but thought better against it. At Keystone Motors, cops are engaged in a gunfight with criminals. A cop was about to get hit, when The Flash arrived and prevented the bullets from striking the police officers and tied up the female criminal with chains. As they thanked Flash, an engine was falling from above about to crush them, when the villain known as Magenta suddenly made her presence know by stopping the engine from crushing the police officers underneath. This was met with a frown by The Flash as he didn't need to meet an ex-girlfriend now. Magenta was an ex-girlfriend from the midwest who after using her magnetic powers would suddenly have a bloodthirsty personality emerge from her. As he tried to talk to her, the chained female criminal had dynamites and bombs on her and she pressed a button to detonate them. Flash moved quickly and ran the explosives far away and placed them underneath a mountain of tires in a junkyard to detonate without hurting any civilians. When he came back to Keystone Motors, the cops were investigating the suddenly dead criminals who were stabbed by a knife. A commissioner of the union, Goldface appeared just to mention that Keystone City is one of the last places to be known as Made in America, and gave a little mini speech to the crowd outside. Flash was going to get the criminal but was stopped by the cops citing that Goldface was released from Iron Heights prison a few years ago. But the female officer, Julie grabbed Magenta's wrist to handcuff her for her criminal behavior when she was last seen at Keystone City. Magenta was about to go ballistic, but Flash was able to calme her down. She went with the cops to go to jail for her past misdeeds. As officer Julie arrived at her home later that night and the babysitter left, she was attending to her baby in the crib. A criminal entered her home, and they briefly struggled, as she reached for her gun, the man stabbed her and left her bleeding to death as the baby cried. Comments: Finally! We have the collaboration of the super creative team that will make the Flash a top tier title in DC, and at the same time revitalize the Rogues and bring them acclaimed stories that give them depth as non-flat characters. For some reason, Wally has that "Peter Parker luck" having to leave quality time with his wife, Linda, to attend to being a superhero fighting crime. And then when all is finished, the quality time is over at the ball game. So he couldn't go back to that. At the same time an ex-girlfriend who is currently a super-villain trying to reform, made a surprise appearance in his life. And a police officer is murdered at the end of the issue. The last scene is a pointless death. The villain could have been shown in a different light to be showcased as a dangerous assassin instead of killing a hard-working woman who arrived home to attend to her baby as a single parent, after a hard days work. I suppose at this time, DC is still in its "Women in Refrigerators" prime. Too bad Geoff Johns bought into it.

Flash 1712.25 USD/3.50 CAN @ April 2001 "Blood Will Run, Part Two: The Harvest" Writer: Geoff Johns Penciller: Scott Kolins Inker: Doug Hazlewood Letterer: Gaspar Saladino Colorist: James Sinclair & Digital Chameleon Editor: Joey Cavalieri Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Synopsis: Several murders have occurred in Keystone City as someone has been murdering people that The Flash has saved in the past. Officer Chyre is ticked off someone killed his partner. And Wally visited Magenta who happened to insanely attack the police department. Cicada followers are getting stronger and Magenta showed symptoms of "eye-glowing" as a Cicada follower. Comments: This issue for some reason didn't appeal to me. Perhaps its the way Scott's pencils comes across as cartoony, and Doug's inks on subordinate characters are inconsistent, with too much lines on the faces making them "ugly." Perhaps the next issue would be better.

Flash 1722.25 USD @ MayApril 2001 "Blood Will Run, Part Three: Close to Home" Writer: Geoff Johns Penciller: Scott Kolins Inker: Doug Hazlewood Letterer: Gaspar Saladino Colorist: James Sinclair & Digital Chameleon Editor: Joey Cavalieri Executive Editor: Mike Carlin Synopsis: The police were looking at a dead cicada in the precinct, and then Magenta and The Flash crash the precinct and battled. Magenta gets the better of Flash and takes him away while he's unconscious. Meanwhile the cops see the dead cicada come back to life. The Flash woke up and found himself captive by people under the influence like Magenta. But the bearded man, Cicada told him how he gets his power, through getting the life force from his victim, and he planned to siphon Flash's life force so Cicada can bring his wife back to life. And he plunged a lighting-like material to Flash's chest, and Cicada's wife's eyes suddenly glowed white. Elsewhere, Linda Park found a note thanking her, and she also found a bomb and it blew up, and this as witnessed by a Cicada follower. Comments: I think the main drawback for me for this run so far are the illustrators. First it was "ugly" a few issues ago. And now it is too "cartoony" for my taste. Perhaps I just got used to the wondrous illustrations over at Marvel, or the classic Buscema and Romita art over on the House of Ideas, that Kollins' work is a let down for me. But it still hasn't caught on and I felt like I couldn't wait to finish reading what the story was about.

Flash 1732.25 USD @ June 2001 "Blood Will Run, Part Four: Uneasy Idol" Writer: Geoff Johns Penciller: Scott Kolins Inker: Doug Hazlewood Letterer: Gaspar Saladino Colorist: James Sinclair & Digital Chameleon Editor: Joey Cavalieri Executive Editor: Joey Cavalieri Synopsis: Linda Park was saved from the explosion by the arrival of Jesse Quick, who also captured the Cicada cult member. But before she could interrogate him, he turned the knife on himself, snuffing his life. On another part of the city, Elizabeth was brought back to life from the flow of Cicada's knife and Flash's speed force. She remembered Cicada killing her and tried to take him down, but her life essence was snuffed when Cicada collected her life force, thus disintegrating her form to that of a corpse once more. Central City law enforcement officers Murillo and Chyre tracked down Magenta using a compass to home in on her magnetic powers. Flash saw how the two worked and utilized his speed force to supercharge Magenta to become a super magnet attracting all metallic objects to stick to her. The two police officers tangled with Cicada with one of them getting his arm cut. A now freed Flash battled Cicada and used his speed force to overload Cicada's power and thus draining him. And the police took him into custody. Linda and Wally decided to move back to Keystone City to be with people. Detective Murillo found out he healed faster. And officer Chyre saw Julie's orphaned son exhibit yellow electricity in his eyes, thus making Chyre think the son's father is The Flash. Comments: It's overall a good story, with Kolins helming the cartoony art with limited background illustrations. I'm not familiar with Cicada other than the current Flash television show where it was played by a father and daughter tandem. But I'm still on the ropes in regards to The Flash as he doesn't exhibit the traits that made the Justice League animated series Flash likeable. Perhaps in future upcoming issues as he tangles with the rest of the Flash's Rogues Gallery under the Geoff Johns run.

Flash 1742.25 USD @ July 2001 "Moving Right Along" Writer: Geoff Johns Penciller: Scott Kolins Inker: Doug Hazlewood Letterer: John Costanza Colorist: James Sinclair & Digital Chameleon Editor: Joey Cavalieri Executive Editor: Joey Cavalieri Synopsis: Wally and Linda moved into their new apartment in Keystone City and while having dinner with her parents Wally saw Tar Pit attack hockey players in a playoff game. He sped off and took care of business. Elsewhere, Pied Piper killed his parents with a killer note. And Captain Cold attending the game with a female companion saw The Flash and Tar Pit battle and shot the super-villain. Before The Flash could confront him, Tar Pit regained mobility and caused havoc until he was subdued by Flash utilizing freezing him and destroying him into many pieces which he took to Star Labs for observation. The hockey trophy disappeared and Captain Cold is unaccounted for. The female companion turned out to be a hooker and he has no idea where Captain Cold is. Meanwhile Josh is exhibiting powers when his babysitter called officer Chyre. Comments: It's a pretty straightforward superhero story against the villain of the month, with foreshadowing on two villains that will grace the pages of upcoming issues. You have a baby exhibiting lightning-like powers. Is the kid related to The Flash ? Kolins artwork is too cartoony for my tastes but I am a Wally West fan so let's continue to see where this goes.
