Gideon's Fall issues 1 and 2 which I bought last weekend last week. Just started to read them then need to get issue 3. Great new series by Image Comics. Too bad its a really short series of 5 issues I think that and Barrier Barrier is five issues (because that's how much material there was to the online comic it is presenting in print). Gideon Falls is an ongoing, not a 5 issue limited series. Issue 6 ends the first arc and is solicited for August release. There may be a break between arcs when the trade is released the way many Image books do it (see Saga, Fatale, etc.) but it's an ongoing. -M

The Terrifics #4:
Written by Jeff Lemire. Art by Evan Shaner.
The team takes Phantom Girl back to visit her home planet of Bgztl, the Phantom World. Along the way on their journey thru space they start to bond as a team & of course get attacked by a giant space squid. Phantom Girl's reunion with her family is bittersweet & not as joyful as she had hoped it would be.
Story: felt like an abrupt shift from last issue. Almost like there some pages missing between #3 & 4. Lemire sort of explained the shift in tone somewhat. But I expect better writing from him. Art: I like this art style on this title but there is a revolving door of artists on this title that will definitely hurt any long term success. And it's a shame because of all the New Age of Heroes titles I feel this one has the best chance to succeed. I really like this team but it feels like DC isn't even really trying to get these titles to succeed.
7/10.

Mera #4:
Written by Dan Abnett. Art by Lan Medina and Norm Rapmund.
Mera & Ocean Master try to convince Nereus, the King of Xebel to help overthrow Rath.
Abnett kicks the story into high gear with the interactions between Mera & Xebel. The political intrigue that occurs behind the scenes adds another element to the story. Medina's art can be a bit bland but it is decent.
Overall I am liking Mera > Aquaman right now. It definitely it is the more interesting title of the two.
7/10.

Super Sons #16:
Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art by Carlo Barberi.
We get the concluding issue of this run with the Super Sons rescuing the JLA from Kid Amazo & earning the respect of their fathers.
I was disappointed to read that this was the last issue of the Super Sons. However they will return in Aug in a 12 issue maxi-series by the same creative team as this issue.
What can I say. I have enjoyed this title way more than I thought I would. Tomasi has really engaged me as a writer & excels at portraying families. This last issue was not as good as past issues but Tomasi had to wrap up this volume of Super Sons. Barberi's art is decent.
8/10.

Flash #47:
Flash War: Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Howard Porter.
The Renegades of the 25th century come for Iris West to try her for the murder of Eobard Thawne. Barry, Wally, & Wallace intervene but eventually travel with the Renegades to the 25th century. However Wally is separated & instead ends up in the presence of Zoom who tells Wally he will help him get his old life back with Linda & their two children!
Wow what a cliffhanger as Williamson sets up the arc that will pit Barry against Wally. Nice idea. And I liked the way Williamson set it up. I liked seeing Wally's old life with Linda & his kids plus Max & Bart.
8/10.

X-O Manowar #15:
Written by Matt Kindt. Art by Trevor Hairsine.
This arc starts a 4 parter that shows Aric's life before the armor back in Roman times as he fights with his people against the Roman oppressors.
I was never crazy about stories of Aric before he became Manowar. This one didn't thrill me either although I like Haisine's art.
6/10.

The Terrifics #4: Despite the change in art, I am really enjoying this series. This issue was awesome and reminded me of being back in the 80s where I would pour over a comic several times looking for something I may have missed. I agree with md62...it did feel like there were some pages missing, but I kind of liked getting caught up via Phantom Girl's diary. I liked the quick interactions between Metamorpho and Mr. Terrific discussing a possible cure for Rex's condition. I loved the scene where Plastic Man attempts to comfort Phantom Girl. Phantom Girl's excitement at going home was nice, even if things didn't quite go as she had hoped. Lots of drama, personal interactions, character development, and action in this issue. As for the art...I rather liked it! It had a silver age feel to it and to me, fits this title. 9/10

Star Wars Annual #4 Written by Cullen Bunn Art by Ario Anindito Summary: On a mission to secure funding for the Rebellion Luke crosses paths with an ancient Sith artifact and has a near miss encounter with Vader. Plot: In this bonus issue of Star Wars Bunn gives us a look at Luke's early days with the Rebellion. While the action is fun, and the quick pacing feels very Star Wars the over all plot of Luke encountering a Sith artifact and it nearly over coming him is a little tired at this point. That said, I really liked the pod racing scene with Vader looking on and unknowingly praising his son's skill at a sport he once enjoyed, though not outwardly sentimental it was a great moment for Star Wars fans. If the whole issue had that same level of thought applied to it this would have been an issue for the ages but as it was it was only average and will probably fade from memory over time. Art: Like the plot itself, the art by Anindito was serviceable but not memorable. Grade: 6/10

Future Quest Presents #10 This issue really struck a nerve to me and it's was gripping full of emotions and it's took all the Herculoids to handle things in the best way possible. Animan is one of the most determine super-villain that I've ever read about in any comic book in the past 15 years and this truly a grip undertaking of Dorno and he needs his Parents, his team, and the burden of trying to save the planet Amzot. This issue is 32 pages long and I only read to page 28 and stopped there because I've find it too gripping to see the end. I'm sticking to it. I'm more than willing and waiting for the 11th issue to show up and let that issue determine the outcome of it and wait for it. Of which, will be more than I can handle. Rob Williams had done a terrific writer for this book and it's would be a dream if he could do an animated cartoon today and he would be my first choice to provide the narrative for it. The art of Aaron is excellent and top-notch and this team of Williams and Lopresi really work together and does an outstanding job with this issue. I really enjoying this series and it's the only Modern Book that I read on a monthly basis. Got two more books coming and more so that Williams is one heck of a writer and I've think that he captured the essence of the Herculoids quite nicely. Overall Grade 9/10

Mera #4: Mera and Ocean Master go to Xebel hoping for an alliance...but is there anyone there Mera can truly trust? Mera really shines in this issue. We see what a skilled fighter she is and just what an excellent diplomat she can be. Ocean Master even admits he admires her. Lots of political intrigue and family drama too. If this direction keeps going, no doubt Mera will emerge as a major DC heroine (and certainly more interesting than the current state Wonder Woman is in) 8/10

Witchfinder: The Gates of Heaven #1 Written by Mike Mignola Art by D'Israeli Summary: After a series of ghostly break ins around London Sir Edward Grey is tasked by none other than Queen Victoria to uncover the plot. Plot: In this pot boiler of an issue Mike Mignola brings back our favorite Victorian occult investigator Sir Edward Grey and it's not a moment too soon. While past adventures were often slightly uneven the Victorian, sense of mystery and strong character work are always worth revisiting and if this beginning is of any measure of the quality this story will be then we're in for a fun ride. I love the fact that as the story of Edward Grey progresses and we get closer in time to the rest of the Hellboy universe we start to get more and more allusions to events to come and connections to the present stories we know. Previously in a Professor Bruttenholm mini we learned that the good doctr's uncle once worked with the famous witchfinder and here we actually get to see that adventure. That level of detail and world building is always fun and is part of what makes Mike's work so magical. Art: D'Israeli is one of those artists that I've just been dying to see work with Mignola for some time, his style is just a perfect fit for Mignola's moody, shadowy world. If you've never seen his work check out Leviathan from 2000AD, you'll love it. Grade:10/10
