Like many in my generation, I first encountered comic book characters through cartoons like Super-Friends. I remember seeing both Super Friends and the campy Batman TV series (in reruns/syndication) about the same time. For some reason, I always seemed to gravitate to side-kicks rather than the main heroes. I always seemed to take Batman & Robin as a package deal, so I considered Batgirl the side-kick on the Batman TV show, and she became a favorite. While I didn't get a connection to Wendy & Marvin (I assume because they were un-powered and {to me} goofy) the Wonder Twins became favorites for me, and I still have a soft spot for them to this day. The main reason I started collecting Super Friends memorabilia was because Zan & Jayna started to appear on it. When I started to get into Marvel's X-books, I liked Shadowcat, and later came to really enjoy Jubilee.

I got a kick out of seeing Zan and Jayna on the first season of Titans Go! They always reminded me of Jan and Jace, Space Ghost's teen sidekicks.

Actually, I have an article on my computer that appeared online saying that Zan & Jayna were based on Donny and Marie. I've seen some rumors online that the twins will appear in season 3 of Young Justice. Of course, it's online, so it must be taken with a grain of salt.

My sisters used to drag me into staging "Donnie and Marie" productions for friends and family. Now that you mention it, Purple was their theme color. Donny wore purple socks. I had a pair. And we listened to the album all the time.

For the vast majority of my life the answer would be Batman and the Batman would be the answer. Batman started it all. Reruns of the Batman television show led me to buy comic books the first three of which all had Batman on the cover. My longest runs, by far are of Batman and Detective. I firmly believe that Batman Animated may well be the best cartoon series ever. And while I haven't read Batman regularly in close to twenty years I still think that there is a ton that can be done with the character to make him interesting and relevant.
But now...I probably don't have an answer. I have come to realize that a character is only as good as the presentation through the writing and art. A bad Batman story is still a bad story even if it has what was my favorite character. I know find myself more interested in good stories and what they bring to the characters in them. I also find myself frequently more intrigued by supporting characters than the lead. Dian Belmont is much more interesting than Wes Dodds. Jim Corrigan was more interesting than The Spectre.
My favorite character right now is whichever one is doing something interesting in a good story.

Superman is doing interesting things... He's gotcha there, Slam! Not even Alan Moore could make Superman interesting. So I find the statement highly suspect.

Post Byrne revival, I liked Superman more than Batman. I think the triangle Superman books were my favorite things DC was doing at that time. I can think of many writers tuat mad him more than interesting. Morrison, Moore, Waid. Millar, Busiek...

Honestly though, I'd really have to say Nightman. Loved the Glenn A. Larson series growing up that's unfortunately become a less than tasteful meme in light of "It's Always Sunny". Nightman is what got me into the Ultraverse, Valiant, and indie comics in general
Nightman unfortunately shares a lot of similarites to Shadowman as they were both created by Steve Englehart and has probably the dumbest powerset of any 90's character ever; being able to "hear evil thoughts" and not having to worry about sleeping due to having a piece of sharpnel lodged in his brain
He's more so "charmingly stupid, though well-intentioned" to me now, same goes for the rest of the Ultraverse

He's gotcha there, Slam! Not even Alan Moore could make Superman interesting. So I find the statement highly suspect. I've had a similar conversation with close friend/coworker who for the sake of brevity, we'll call "Batgirl"
She's never found Superman a particularly engaging character, but loves Aquaman and Captain Marvel/Shazam. Okay, let's stop for a moment and think about that. Aquaman is basically an aquatic Superman who's been a long standing joke of a character because people think that his only power is that he can swim and talk to fish
Even Peter David went out of his way to point that out in his run of the character
So if even Aquaman is more relatable to Supes......
Let's step even farther back to Captain Marvel/Shazam, who I find indefinitely more charming because Fawcett actually knew how to have fun. Fun, with the character, imagine that! But as I'm getting more older (yes, 30 compared to the rest of you must seem like cat years), I'm finding Freddy Freeman/Marvel Junior more enticing because Freddy was never really forced to grow up like Mary and Billy were in a sense

Im trying to figure out how to express this, but I think you'll get the drift. While Captain America is, and has always been my favorite character, there are times when I have fallen for another. You know, the love has dwindled, the fires are low, you get temporary chemistry with a Bat for a year or 2...BUT you always come back for your true love, there can be only one, or so they say.
Since I read the 50s Cap story( CA 153-156) I was done, gone, a true believer.
However over the intervening years I have had minor and major flirtations. From Alfred E.Neuman as I mainlined MAD for about 18 months, to Johnny Alpha who I found way more sympathetic than the stony faced Dredd. I found myself with a newborn appreciation of Benjamin Grimm, which has never died, and had a obsessive relationship with a certain raven maned barbarian, leading to a serious devotion to the works of Frank Frazetta. As a young teen I loved Green Lantern, but have since realised this was for the beauty of Gil Kanes work than any interest in carbon copy DC hero Hal Jordan. There have been minor flings with Swamp-Thing and Daredevil, Constantine and Grimjack, or Ambush Bug and Midnighter...
But always one constant, Captain America.
Cue stirring patriotic music, blaring thru hidden speakers, marching bands and twirling batons...fade to black

My favorites began with a few of the big name heroes and then drops into the second tier quickly.
Marvel: Spider-Man, Thor, Iron-Man, Hawkeye, Beast, Goliath (in the purple and yellow), Captain Mar-Vell and then villain wise I would grab whenever they appeared: Swordsman, Absorbing Man, Mysterio. Teams: Avengers and Fantastic Four.
DC: Flash, Batman, Metamorpho, Hawkman, Adam Strange, The Demon, Mister Miracle and villain wise: Captain Cold, Riddler, Captain Boomerang, Reverse Flash. Teams: Doom Patrol, Legion of Superheroes, Justice League.

I guess Supergirl, through thick and thin. The Infantino early '80s series I did buy at the time but it was a bit of a low point, and then they had her pop her clogs... so there followed a protoplasmic blob Supergirl for a couple of one-shots, a mini series and then a regular series until now there is a non-blob connected Supergirl again in 2005. I had to catch up on all that! Oh and a weird two issue thing with Ambush Bug in it... I'm not sure how much I want to figure out what happening in that one! I kind of had a thing for the old Sheen Queen Of the Jungle for awhile too. For individual male heroes I liked Hawkman at DC and Iron Man at Marvel. I had '60s Hawkman #1-11 and a few of the last ones and then a combined Atom & Hawkman comics, also some Strange Adventures he was in and two Brave & Bolds (only one Kubert, the other was him and Aquaman)! Iron Man I had a small stack of '60s issues including Iron Man & Sub-Mariner #1, Iron Man #1, and now have #95-139 and Annual #4. Whew!
