Hawkman #2: If you have ever been a fan of Hawkman, pick up this book. Story and art both on point and I felt like I was watching a movie as I read this. There's a lot to take in here from the nuances of the story to the art. No 3 minute read here. Enjoyed the scenes where Hawkman confronts himself in the past and his frustration at Khufu not understanding who he is. The art and coloring are excellent. I felt drawn into the action, especially the double page Hawkman/Khufu fight. Hitch puts lots of detail in this book and it is much appreciated. DC seems to want Hawkman to be done right...and this is Hawkman at his hairy chested bad a$$ best (that is my second chest hair reference, I am watching too many Magnum PI reruns, haha!) The story is just enough to keep moving and keeping me wanting to know more. An excellent mystery! Looking forward to seeing how Hawkgirl will figure into this as well. 10/10

Superman #1: Count me in as enjoying this more than Man of Steel. I wasn't quite on board with the Martian Manhunter's conversation with Superman. Maybe because I don't care for that character? And was Lois wearing a Jayna of the Super Friends style pajama set? And nice that Superman has his chest hair back, haha! I noticed the paper is different too. Almost like old school comic paper, but nicer. 9/10 You really notice all the little details! Yes that was a Super Friends Jayna PJ's. I didn't like Superman with MM. Saying "I love you Jonn" and "You look good" just seemed... weird. But hey maybe having chest hair makes you talk like that. Too "bromancy" for me. And yeah the paper was a nice quality.

Archie #32: An excellent finale to Waid's run on the title. Sad the book is going on hiatus, but looking forward to Archie 1941, the new Betty and Veronica title, and Archie coming back with a new creative team (who has big shoes to fill). 10/10 Did you like the 1941 preview? Yes sir I did! I am interested in this--however I have a feeling there will be sadness in the story....like some of the gang will be casualties of WW2.

Both DC & Marvel are really producing some good stuff right now.

Titans 23 by Dan Abnett, Brandon Peterson,Ivan Plascencia, and Dave Sharp: Whew, what a mess. So Lilith, Tempest, Arsenal, and Wally West Flash are gone and now the Titans are Nightwing, Donna Troy, Beast Boy, Raven, Miss Martian, and Steel. The team doesn't quite mesh as Nightwing and Miss Martian argue over leadership styles (she's the JL appointed babysitter). Donna Troy--I don't think Abnett has any idea how to write her (I believe this is higher up's decree and not his choice) as one moment she's going all blood thirsty savage and then later talking about hair products. Steel, Raven, and Miss Martian do nothing for me. Beast Boy's predicament is mildly interesting as his powers are out of control. In this issue the "team" is charged with investigating fall out from the source wall. In the final moments of the book, Miss Martian and Martian Manhunter discuss whatever her real reason for being there is. The art is ok...nothing special. Some of the proportions are off and the characters sometimes look really awkward. Only got this issue because I forgot to take it off my list. Save your $4.

Betty and Veronica Friends Forever: Travel Tales #1: 4 stories for 2.99 featuring B&V in travel themed stories. In the first story, the girls go to state university for a preview weekend and have an encounter with the school mascot, a bull named Beefcake. Next, the girls along with Midge, Nancy, and Ethel go on a camping trip (the boys all find this hilarious). Of course the boys' predictions come true, but Veronica has a back up plan. Story three finds the girls on a cruise helping a magician save his show. In the final story, the girls visit Mr. Lodge's mock Mars Outpost (he's preparing for when travel to Mars is a reality). The girls enter the outpost and mess everything up. At first I thought these stories were new, but they are reprints of the new stories in the monthly digests. They are funny and entertaining, even if I have already read them. All ages for fun for $3, why not? 7/10

I'm so behind on these things and I have a lot of problems running a club and all that -- I'm going to need another week or two to get caught up.
I have Hawkman #2 and probably get to it by Wednesday/Thursday at the latest and the Future Quest Presents -- I've haven't read the last one yet (#11) and that's probably be done by end of the week or after - most likely after.
It's been a frustrating week for me ... sorry.

Knights of the Dinner Table #255 w/strips by Jolly R. Blackburn What started as a little strip about four guys playing role-playing games has grown into a whole world, dozens of characters and multiple storylines weaving in and out. In this issue, the main story continues, as Sara has taken over as Gamemaster and has the guys in a science fiction scenario where their characters are unskilled, untrained, and in way over their heads. These players are used to tweaking the rules and finding every loophole to make their characters as powerful as possible, and they tend to just fight their way through most challenges. So watching them scramble to adapt to the new game style is fun. Plus, Patty (one of my favorite supporting characters) has made her way to the 'big' table. Her relationship with B.A. has been developing slowly and naturally, and I'm happy to see her getting more prominence in the strip. There's also a 'director's cut' story (a reprint with improved art and dialogue, cause Jolly has gotten better at this over the years) where another gaming group, the Black Hands, have a little talk with their GM about teamwork. They don't quite get it. Having had a campaign end recently with the player characters turning on each other and only one survivor, I can totally relate, eh? Aye, there's the rub. I can relate to these characters. I've played with folk like this, and I can see myself in a couple of them. But the book is definitely aimed at role-players. If you've never slung the dice, you might not connect with these people as much. And with half the book devoted to articles and gaming aids, I can see why this book isn't a mainstream break-through hit. It's a must-read for me, but YMMV.

thwhtguardian, maybe if you see a copy flip through Titans 23 and see what you think. It just didn't seem like the Titans to me...just sort of generic and almost like the editors told Abnett what to do and he did the best he could with what he was told. Of course, I don't know that to be true but that's how it felt as I read it.

Casper and Hot Stuff #1 by Mike Wolfer, Eric Shanower, Jeremy Kahn, Natalie Jane, Pat Shand, Jeff Scherer and Warren Kremer. Picked this up out of nostalgia ( I fondly remember when Harvey cranked out tons of titles!) and it was nice to see Casper and some of his friends back, courtesy of American Mythology Productions. Three stories for $3.99 plus a joke page! Story 1 features Casper and Hot Stuff playing a prank on Wendy that goes awry (really it's Hot Stuff and not Casper, Casper tries to stop him). Story 2 finds Hot Stuff causing mayhem with a magic wand he finds in the garbage. Story 3 is a classic from 1974. I absolutely loved reading this and found myself chuckling as I did. Simple, clean, art along with funny writing gave me a treat. No pretentious or complicated plots here, just pure fun for everyone!
8/10

Hawkman #2.Written by Robert Venditti. Art and Cover by Bryan Hitch. Borrowed the text from md62 -- This book is really captured the essence of Hawkman and really into the mythos of Carter's past that Venditti really does a subtle way of doing it and the book is right on the money. I felt that Venditti made Hawkman very real to me and does it in an adventurous way that I didn't expect it to happen. With the art of Bryan Hitch -- man I dig the wings shown below, they seem to come alive and made an impact that really knocks you out. This book really stands out -- and I think the partnership of Venditti and Hitch is top notch and they seems have telepathic reasoning because the art of Hitch enhance the writing of Venditti of which you don't see that often these days. Book Grade is 10/10

Plastic Man #2.Written by Gail Simone. Art by Adriana Melo. Simone "gets" Plas. She writes him quirky & funny. The first few pages she allows Melo a lot of freedom to draw Plas in outrageous situations & it works beautifully. This issue Plas goes up against Man-Bat while trying to protect & find a kid that helped him. I know that sounds simple but the issue works. Great story. Great art. Great Character that is hard to do right. 8/10. I read this book and the simplicity of Gail really shines and most importantly she keeps Plastic Man interesting, fun, and doing his job so that he can make a difference. Gail goes outside of the box and selected Man-Bat and using the kid that helped Plastic-Man along the way. I really feel that the way Gail is using Plastic-Man appeals to all ages and has some enduring quality of a Loony Tunes cartoon and that attracted me to this book. I'm going to give this book a grade of 9/10 ... the teaming of Simone and Melo does an excellent job putting it altogether and that's really captured the Plastic-Man of the past that I've really liked the most. Playing catch-up isn't an easy thing to do.
