April 1991: Love and Rockets #35: I'd like to say this was a peak period for the series but then it never really had any low points, to my mind. However, I don't think any serial story ever absorbed me more than Gilbert's Poison River, which was going on around this time, and Jaime was firing on all cylinders too with Wig Wam Bam. Not sure why I thought Poison River didn't begin until around #41 when I wrote my post for May 1993 comics, since apparently I remembered that it had already begun by April 1991 when I posted on that months comics. Maybe I was thinking it ended around then, since that's what I said about #40, but I'm not sure that's right either. At any rate, it actually began way back in Love and Rockets #29, which I re-read for the fist time in many years last night.

Oh, man....the summer the industry threw up on itself! I'm embarrassed by some of this. I really, really wanted to like Comics' Greatest World, based on Dark Horse's previous superhero offerings, like The American and The Mark; but, it was mediocre, at best. Of this first month's books, Ghost was the only one even mildly entertaining and I thought it was more T&A than anything, though not at a Femforce level. Then, there was Ultraverse. I bought those inital offerings; but didn't continue most. of these, I only bought Hardcase #1 and didn't like it, but kept buying Prime and The Strangers. Prime was okay; but a pale imitation of Captain Marvel, though Norm Breyfogle helped it. I really liked The Strangers and was sad to see it go, when Marvel bought Malibu. Ultraverse was mostly average material, but more interesting than Comics' Greatest World, if mostly derivative. I continued buying the Reign of Superman, through the return of the real guy and his mullet. Didn't stay long after, though. I can't recall if I bought Secret Weapons #1, from Valiant, but know I didn't buy anything else, if I did. Pretty poor superhero team. DHP chugs right along. Jonah Hex gets Joe Lansdale and Tim Truman and my dollars. I did not buy Milestone. I looked at some of them, mainly Icon, but they didn't wow me. I wanted to support the company and the idea of it; but I just couldn't get into the material. Deathmate.....ugh.......should have saved my money. What a fiasco that was! Still have no idea what is going on, in The Maxx, but I keep buying, trying to figure it out. It took the MTV cartoon to really make it come together, for me. Grendel War Child wraps up with an interesting twist and another corrupted figure. Batman/Grendel finally materialized, after it got held up in Comico's bankruptcy. Saw original art for it two years before the actual comic. Really liked the two issues, with matt Wagner pitting his Fantomas-esque villain against the Dark Knight Detective. Nice battle of wits. Chaykin and Lester Girls, at Epic. Last Hurrah for the imprint. Cerebus 0 reprinted some bits and pieces. I can't recall if I was reading Cerebus in the monthlies yet, or not. I know I glanced at a few Mothers & Daughters issues and was definitely picking it up during the Reads segment. Loved when the Roach exploded with multiple personalities, satirizing the deluge of superhero lines. Little did we know that the industry was rushing toward the cliff and everyone was stepping down on the gas pedal.

Hate #13
I feel like I was buying more comics in the early 1990s than I usually list in this thread. Maybe my memory's playing me false or maybe there's a few independent things not included on Mike's site.

Highlight of the month, aside from another great Propellerman issue, was DHP #79, with the first part of "The Crossing," the first tale from Christopher Moeller's Iron Empires saga. At that point, he was using the title, The Shadow Empires, which would continue in 1994's Faith Conquers. Here, the focus is on an iron soldier, a sort of futuristic knight, who is part of an invading army, who put a royal family to death; but, the soldier cannot take the life of the young princess and protects her, taking her away with him. It has a certain Lone Wolf and Cub vibe, while also bearing a lot of similarity to the Warhammer RPG series and tie-in novels. After the DHP stuff, there was Faith Conquers, about a new garrison commander, on a frontier world. Then, we catch back up with the soldier and the fugitive princess, in Negative Burn, from Caliber Comics. That was followed by Sheva's War, from the DC Helix line. Really great military sci-fi stories, with a horror twist and Moeller's terrific painted art. I first saw his work in Innovation's adaptation of the Republic serial, King of the Rocketmen, put out when the Rocketeer was about to hit theaters.

December 1993
Age of Reptiles #2 Batman #504 Batman Adventures:Mad Love #1
Batman:In Darkest Knight #1 Interestingly enough this is one of the comics from this list that I remember the most. Bruce Wayne gets a GL ring. And combines his look with the power of the GL ring and his original Batman costume. If my memory serves he even goes overboard with his power. Not quite mad with power like Hal (which ironically starts this month as well with GL #49) more like Jean-Paul did as Batman when he took the mantle while Bruce healed. One of the more memorable Elseworld tales in my opinion. Though it would still be another year or so before I started actually buying comics off the rack. This list is just comics I have accumulated over the years.
