This is what remains of Paper Films' (Jimmy Palmiotti's comic publishing company) inventory of comics and trades after their warehouse was flooded in the wake of Milton's making landfall in Florida... The office was physically in the back room of a comic store, so a lot of their inventory was lost int he flood as well. -M This is absolutely terrible for comic collectors to contemplate. With all the flooding from hurricanes and devastation from tornados and wildfires we have had lately, I am sure more than a few comic collections have been among the property destroyed and lost by the victims. Collections of long or short boxes are not something that can be easily or quickly moved in the face of such things headed in the direction of your home and probably not something that should be prioritized in such situations anyways. -M

If various sites are accurate, the first issue of Marvel UK’s Dracula Lives went on sale 50 years ago today: The title reprinted Tomb of Dracula. It ran for 88 issues, and also reprinted other supernatural tales. Crikey, 50 years! When I was very young, my grandmother had a pile of UK comics for us all to read when we visited, and a few issues of that title were there- I think including #1 as I'm familiar with that cover. Most of the comics were older than me because some of my cousins were decades older and I was one of the youngest. They were incredibly tatty, and most weren't of interest to me then, but it was fun to flick through and see if it'd missed a sci-fi story!

Forty five years ago today, Marvel UK published these comics: I was never a big fan of Paul Neary's work, but I think this cover was one of his better efforts. The kid pointing at Spidey seems to have been copied and pasted from Amazing Spider-Man #189's splash page by John Byrne and Jim Mooney. That's a very good spot! I'm not at all familiar with Neary's pencilling- I know him as the EiC that gutted the remnants of my beloved Marvel UK office at the same time as scrapping favourites such as Transformers, and as an excellent inker.

By the way, Byrne should be flattered that his faces were worth trading back then- you wouldn't want to trace a post 1983 Byrne face 😅

On sale 55 years ago today:: I always loved seeing battles between villains and heroes that “belonged” to other opponents.

I always loved seeing battles between villains and heroes that “belonged” to other opponents. Same! It can mix things up nicely, and Scorpion with Cap is a great example.

I always loved seeing battles between villains and heroes that “belonged” to other opponents. Same! It can mix things up nicely, and Scorpion with Cap is a great example. Acts of Vengeance was pretty decent, although I never thought it quite lived up to the hype. I *never* want “cross-pollination” of heroes and villains to be routine. Some things should be special. I don’t want WWE WrestleMania every month. But, occasionally, it was nice to see Kraven take on the Hulk, or see Cap vs. Mandarin. I don’t know if “cross-pollination” is even a thing now. It may be occasionally. And sometimes I worry about how the ubiquity of crossovers and events prevents such things; I could be wrong, but if Cap’s exploits are tied into Marvel’s perpetual events for 2+ years, then what chance is there of seeing Vulture or Shocker show up in a Cap book? I also have read that editorial fiefdoms can be a thing (or were). I don’t know how true it is, but someone once told me that many, many years ago, a Spidey editor didn’t want Kraven used in another book. I am making a lot of assumptions here, but I just feel that the days of surprise villain appearances are gone, given the existence of pull lists, huge events, etc. It feels sad we can’t go back to an era when you spotted a Thor comic - with Juggernaut on the cover.

On sale 55 years ago today:: I always loved seeing battles between villains and heroes that “belonged” to other opponents. Here’s one from 1966 that wouldn’t have faced any beefs from editors because Schwartz had been switched over to Batman. Good way for him to plug the Flash by capitalizing on Batmania. I’m guessing he used the Weather Wizard b/c he hadn’t appeared since JLA 41 the year before and hadn’t been in The Flash for a couple of years. (Thanks, Mike. RIP)

Letting Kingpin cross over to Daredevil kinda worked.

Not sure the following belongs in the Atlas toys thread, but it seems worth mentioning that these two comics went on sale 50 years ago today:

I bought a bulk box of comics from the CBG back in the 90's, and it included an almost complete run of Atlas comics, with duplicates... I gave them away, not understanding how cool I would eventually think they were.
