A look at the process of creating a cover, in this case Skull the Slayer #8. It started with Marie Severin layouts in blue pencil... then Jack Kirby did the full pencils... then Frank Giacoia did the inks... and the final cover as colored and released... -M

Fascinating stuff, but what about the person who stapled it?
Seriously, though, I’ve always wondered something about colouring, specifically what say a colourist has in colours used. Of course, if he/she is colouring Spider-Man, it’s red and blue. But what about civilians walking past Parker’s home? Can the colourist choose what colour attire they wear? What about parked cars? Does the colourist have leeway, complete control, some control, etc?

Does the colourist have leeway, complete control, some control, etc? Depends--sometimes the artist (designer or penciller) will have specific ideas. But the colorist's value is not just to color things "right"--The Flash is red, the sky is blue, the trees are green--but to use color to draw attention to key parts of the image, enhance mood, etc. That will determine whether background things like cars and people are colored individually or the same to fade onto the background.

This looks like something the Fantastic Four would find on another planet:

Tough call, Batflunkie . Is there a Viking Galaxy Cruise I could take to both? Silver Age Krypton was cool, but explosive, too. Asgard might occasionally be threatened by the likes of Mangog, but I think I'd rest easier knowing that Thor would give him a Gog-whuppin'.

Fair play, Forbidden Planet:

Fair play, Forbidden Planet: How would they increase their prices? Charge more than cover price for a book? Or do they offer a discount and are not reducing it? Will that hold if publishers up the MSRP on all comics by a significant amount to recoup their own increased costs? Just sounds like a bit of an empty statement for pure marketing. -M

Fair point. I don’t know. I actually use an independent LCS (been years since I’ve visited Forbidden Planet). Perhaps if I see some comments on their social media pages, someone may shed some light on things.

People have talked about "modern recoloring" of classic comics. On Cartoonist Kayfabe the other day, they showed a particularly egregious example, comparing the first Sub-Mariner story as reprinted in one of Marvel's hardcovers to a facsimile edition of the original printing. The video jumps to the relevant section. Wow, I don't think I've ever seen anything that drastic. There should have been a way of making the images a bit clearer but still keeping the "murky" aesthetic.

Also, since, as I remember (I last went to the NYC Forbidden Planet 25+ years ago) monthly books are a very small part of what they sell, it may be worthwhile to them to give up some profit on floppies--even use them as loss leaders--if it brings new people into the store.

The Marvel Voices podcast has returned with a new season and the first episode features an in-depth interview with letterer Janice Chiang about her time working at Marvel in the 70s and 80s, breaking into the industry, her craft and having to transition from hand to digital lettering, as well as her experiences as a first generation Asian immigrant to the US in the Vietnam era and the role comics played in her learning the language and culture of the US. It's an interesting listen. Marvel Voices podcast-M
